Butch Dysart and his 1967 Impala SS-427

Ойын-сауық

"Butch Dysart and his 1967 Impala SS-427" is an interview segment of the documentary "Decade of Thunder" by Brian FitzGerald of Wichita, Kansas.
A Body and Fender Man by trade, Butch Dysart put all the art and craft he has learned from decades in the business into this immaculate Impala. Butch has coined a phrase "Super Original" to describe his restoration technique. He brings cars back to the way they "should" have been in the first place with as perfect "fit & finish" as you can get.
As Butch says in the interview, the 427 Impala was sold in the day as a family car that you could take to the drags.
Most cars have their best viewing angle from the front. This Impala breaks that rule. It is attractive from all sides - including the undercarriage! You'll have to watch the movie to see it, though.
The Grille shines like a diamond and is perfect in every way.

The '67/'68 Impala fastbacks are masterpieces of design and engineering. I never ever get tired of gawking at them. The lines are more beautiful than anything made these days by anybody, and the rumble, of course, is a music all its own. And to think that these were affordable by practically anybody. The men who designed these beauties are our unsung heroes.

I don't comment much on KZread but I have to tell you when I was 16 I got a 67 Impala super sport 327.. And I absolutely love this car restored it and kept it for 15 years. Reading through some of other comments I find that I had the same end to my car. A drunk driver totaled my car right in front of my house. You've done an absolutely beautiful job to the car and it brings back great memories. Enjoy it! You have a true talent.

I have a 1966 427 Chevelle that I’ve had since 1980. It’s my first car. It had a 230 6 cylinder in it when I bought it and my next door neighbor was a Chevy big block fanatic who was best friends with the best engine builder and tune up wizard in the area so they built a powerful 427 for me in 1983. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done as far as vehicles go. I outran a Vancouver Washington policeman and I won all of my races except for 2. One was a pro bracket car with slicks and the other was a 1948 Dodge that must have had an amazing motor too. I love 427’s so this Impala really looks good to me. He’s done a fantastic job on it. I’d love to have one like it. I need to find someone to restore my car and a 1970 Monte Carlo that I bought with a 402 in it. Happy New Year everyone!

Thanks, man. I believe in being thorough. I could have edited these much more tightly - after all I make 30 second commercials for a living. But, I consider documentaries to be "long forms" and understand that viewers will stop, start, rewind, replay or skip when watching a movie. Considering that is how I made these. Since you like the car movie, you should check out some of my Vintage Airplane docs. They all start with "That They..."

One of a kind car. Perfect example to be done right. The fit of the bumpers and panels, as well as the trim around the taillight's and hood edges are phenomenally perfect. They will never make cars like this again. A friend of mine had one in high school. It was a 68. These cars are tanks, but be warned, they will surprise you with agility and strait line speeds well into the triple digits...lol

I bought a brand new 67 SS427 like this one except it did not have a vinyl top, and was all red with a white interior. It did not have an Impala emblem on the dash, as it was not technically an Impala, though it was based on the Impala body. It had Super Sport on the passenger side of the dash, and had a small SS427 on the horn button. I don't personally like the looks of the front being lowered like on Butch Dysart's car. It makes the front look like it's too heavy. Just me, but it looks like he did an excellent job on restoration, and I wish I had kept mine, but not all of us have the foresight that some have. Also mine had white running lights on the front of each fender. I still have the original numbers matching engine from this car. The car was in Pecos, Texas several years ago, still in decent condition, but had been painted blue. I bought my car from the Chevrolet dealership in Monahans, Texas, a very long time ago. LOL You young guys that buy special cars today, keep them!! A tach in the dash was optional, but mine did not have one from the factory, so I installed a Sun tach on the steering column.

A 62 Bel Air 409-409 or a 65 Impala SS 396-425 is probably my favorite of the full size Chevy's but your 67 SS427 is gorgeous. Always liked the full size 427 Ford's too

I bought a brand new 1967 Bolero Red SS427, no vinyl top, but it did have the white running lights where this one has the black aluminum panels. My car did not come with the Impala emblem on the dash. It had SS427 there and SS427 on the steering wheel center. The wood grained steering wheel appeared to be slightly larger diameter than this car. I loved the car, but when my son was born, we decided we needed an air conditioned car. I still have the original 427 engine from that car, and I know where the rest of the car currently is, but he won't sell it. This car was not an impala, but was based on the Impala body. There was an Impala SS that you could get with the 427, but the SS427 was a very special car. This car appears to be very original with the exception of the Impala emblem, and probably the steering wheel! Still a very nice car!

Nice car and a lot of attention to detail. 67 fastback is one of my favorites. I have a 67 Impala SS fastback myself. Was going to clone an SS427 with it, and had the domed hood, hood ornament and special emblems to do it, but changed my mind. But if you were going for original, the panel between the grille and the front bumper should not be red. It should be silver for those that don't know. But you've modified other areas of the car, so maybe you made a choice. As others have said, the dash emblem above the glove box should say Super Sport on an SS427 ( (and on a Super Sport of course), not Impala. None of my business, but it'd look better if the car sat level ;-) . Thanks for the video.

I'm a Mopar guy but that is sweet ride. The big bodied Chevy's of the 60's have always been among my favorites...particularly the 1965-67 models. Before 1970 if you wanted the hottest Chevy big block you had to buy either a Corvette or a full size car because of the GM corporate edict that didn't allow engines larger than 400 cubes in their intermediates, pony cars, or compacts. My favorite BowTies were always the big block equipped full size cars...first the 409's and later the 396/427 cars. Always wanted a 66 Biscayne L72 or a 62 Bel Air 409/409. The lower line Biscayne/Bel Air was the choice of most drag racers because they were cheaper and lighter than a higher end Impala SS or Caprice

In high school in 1976 I had the 1967 Impala 396 SS two door with factory racing stripes, that I bought from an Army in excellent condition. When he showed the interior with the bucket seats and the wooden steering wheel it was a flashback. When I first got mine I was elated, then after a couple of years it just seemed to be like another car. Just before I went to college I sold it. Did I take care of it? No! Did I appreciate what I had? No. I was a dumb 18 year old. Dumb as a rock. Wish I had that car today, instead of trying to burn the rubber off the tires.

The fact that the car doesn't have the T78 optional front fender lights wasn't because they were "deleted"......T78 just wasn't checked on the option sheet. T78's were std. equipment on the Caprice. 15" rally wheels were dealer-available w/o disc brakes, but would require 15" tires via option R51.

The "Impala" emblem could have been a replacement for the original "Super Sport" emblem. Even with RPO Z24, tach and gauges were not included, they had to be ordered separately. So I'd say it's an original Z24 car.

There might be some guys you can find out there but for sheer quantity of quality car restorers, Wichita, Mulvane, Salina and Northern Oklahoma have probably the highest per capita outside of L.A.

SS 427 never said Turbo-Jet other than on the air cleaner. Fender emblems are correct. Heater hose clamps should be of the spring type, not the tower type.

an impala with 427? or an impala ss with a 427? 0r is sombody having a "tribute" to the chevrolet "SS 427" the ss and ss427 should show an super sport call out above the glove box. the ss427 does not have super sport anywhere else good news is the serial number on 67s show the model it was built as lots of price spread here

CORRECTION: The simulated vents on the hood have nothing to do with Vietnam. That war did not have impacts on the auto industry like previous wars such as WWII. Those vents never came to be because of the Corvette. The SS427 Impala was going to use the very same tri-power 427 as the 427 Corvette. But, the 427 Tri-Power Impala, would have had more horsepower than the non- Tri-Power Corvette- think about that- a FULL-SIZE, not mid-size Chevelle, not Camaro, not Nova, but a BIG Impala “family car” making more power than one of their pricey sports cars... Chevrolet was absolutely NOT going to allow that to happen. THAT, is why the SS427 Impala has the fake vents, and not a real tri-power. And that, in my opinion, sucks.

gmcaprala As it is, this same engine was in the Corvette. Chevrolet also had an oval port Tri-power in the Corvette that would have worked nicely here. I don't get your point other than they wanted the Corvette to be at the top of the power heap. What about the ZL1 Camaro? It had all the same specs as an L88 except the camshaft was bigger and of course the Aluminium block. An L88 or ZL1 in an Impala had no real purpose as the Camaro, Nova, and Chevelle were taking the reins on the street and strip. A big family sized car with Boulevard bruiser ability was definitely a sleeper.
