1967 Chevrolet Camaro RS Z28 Muscle Car Of The Week Episode 321
When Chevrolet decided to enter the world of Trans Am racing with the new ‘67 Z/28, the choice was black and white!
The SCCA Trans Am road racing series was a hot competition in the late 1960s, and participating manufacturers were required to sell consumer-level versions of any car allowed to race in Trans Am. Chevrolet’s entrant was the new for 1967 Camaro, aimed straight at the Ford Mustang, which had been the playground bully of Trans Am in ‘66. Chevrolet was technically out of racing at this point, but Chevrolet Promotions Manager Vince Piggins worked closely with the SCCA before the car was available to make sure it would have a place in Trans Am. The rulebook required 1000 streeters needed to be sold to remain legal, but Chevrolet was able to utilize a loophole to qualify 1967 SS350 Camaros in SCCA Group 1 as well as Z28s in Group 2. The result was that only 602 ‘67 Z28s were sold.
When the options were all put together into a package for retail sale, Chevrolet called it Regular Production Option or RPO code Z28, and the code name was cool enough for a car name, so.. it stuck! RPO Z28 added performance goodies all over the car to improve handling, braking, and speed, while reducing luxury items to save weight. That’s one of the reasons why this car is unique, as it has a bit of both personalities.
Z28s were equipped with one of Chevrolet’s most famous V8s, the solid-cam 302 cubic inch V8. Chevrolet didn’t have a V8 that fit within the 305 cube Trans AM limit, so they crossed a 327 4” bore block with the 3” stroke of a 283, upfitted it with 11:1 compression pistons and a high-lift cam, and whammo! Instant high-revving small block fun that fit the rulebook. They were rated at 290 HP, but most agree the high-flow intake and heads and heavy-breathing 800 CFM Holley carb were good for more than that. Z/28s were all backed by a 4-speed Muncie transmission, and a 12-bolt rear axle out back for strength and traction, this one stuffed with 3.73:1 gears.
Don’t let the small displacement 302 fool you, these 11:1 solid cam mighty mice spun to 7000 RPM making full use of the 4-speed and 3.73 gears.
The power team isn’t the only piece of the Z/28 puzzle, as the car was the only Camaro to roll on 15” wheels, although they were only 6” wide. They featured power disc brakes, and the suspension system was tuned with stiffer springs and shocks, and a traction bar system to help reduce rear wheel hop. Although ‘67 Z/28s had to exterior badges, the dual hood and deck stripes were a dead giveaway as to what you were tangling with.
1967 Camaro Z/28s are fascinating cars, and their production and sale allowed Chevrolet to compete in the Trans Am racing series. They are loaded with smart part choices, and this one tops it all off with the Rally Sport option!
The Rally Sport package adds style to the Z, and it consisted of hideaway headlights, and distinctive tail lights with the reverse lights mounted below the bumper. Bright trim outlined the bottom of the car with wheel opening and rocker mouldings. This one also features front and rear bumper guards, a black pinstripe, and a vinyl top… all of which contrast nicely against the Ermine White paint.
Adding even more contrast is the deluxe blue interior, the center 4-speed console loaded with gauges, and a tilt steering wheel to hang on to in the turns. A/C was out of the question on Z28s, as was an automatic trans, so this is a car you drove with both hands!
It’s a stunning car for sure, and this one runs with all it’s born-with, numbers matching parts. It may have been used in some Chevrolet promotional material, but there wasn’t much for the ‘67 Zs, which is partially why they didn’t sell that many.
Love the sound of that solid-cam 302. Lets see here… what can we bring out next time from The Brothers Collection? You’ll have to subscribe to find out for our next episode of Muscle Car Of The Week!

Not really it's easy to make a clone and with even subtle mods will vastly out perform a real one. You can pick up nice V8 driver today starting around $20k today, granted a real SS or Z/28 with documentation will cost double that easily. Plus modifying a random V8 or I6 car is guilt free, and many already have been swapped to a 350 which is a way better street engine with decent torque.

A white '67 Z28 shell sat in the woods about 10 miles from my house for many years until someone hauled it off for scrap metal. A friend of mine cut the VIN out of it and another friend has the title. The 12 bolt and front disc brakes were installed in a '67 base Camaro and that car was sold. The original block was still in the area around 20 years ago, but I don't know where it is now. The original owner went to prison for killing a man and while he was there someone stole most of his stuff.

Masterpiece. I grew up in that era, father was an automotive engineer for Chevrolet and I followed in his footsteps. There was something really special about the Z28. I remember when it came out and the buzz about the car. To me, the '69 Z was the pinnacle but that car you showcased is an extraordinary, unmolested example. Thanks for the review and brought back many memories of street racing on Woodward Ave.

I saw my first '67 Z/28 in the spring of 1967 in the small town my grandparents lived in. I was smitten by it. It was orange with black stripes. Fast forward to 1970 and the owner, who had a gas station, had it for sale. It was under a tarp. I was 18. I had the money to buy it as I had worked my tail off at a factory. I informed my dad of my plans. He sold insurance. When I told him about the car, he started yelling about a high performance surcharge and underwriters. He told me that there was no way I was going to buy it if I planned on living at home anymore. I didn't have the money to buy it and move out as I was paying for my own college. So, I had to pass. Even now, I still think about it.

It was always my understanding that all the 67 were base models, with Z\28 performance parts. Was the RS package dealer added? The MO 302 really was the Corvette L76 with a 283 crank. The early 68's used the same engine the later ones got a different M casting, I forget the letter but it uses a 350 larger journal 4 bolt main block and aside from the casting number identical to the DZ used in 69'. The Duntov 30-30 cam is not the same cam used in the race cars which used an off road race cam, though the OTC cross ram used on the race cars will add a few ponies up top. Hot Rod magazine tested the DZ and made 356@6700 and a underwhelming 333lb-ft@4400. Tested back in the day that was good for mid to high 14's, not really any quicker than the base SS 350. With the cross ram installed they could run high 13's suggesting it added about about 50hp at the engine. Just adding a set of headers with the cross ram would likely get one into the mid 13's and putting HP around 450. The 302's are the only GM engines that made more HP past the 6500 red line in stock form. So it made about the same HP as the L76 327 by spinning faster but less torque do to the shorter stroke. For those wondering Hot Rod also tested the Boss 302 and it made 372hp@6800 and 325lb-ft@4200, the SBC heads just didn't flow as well as the Cleveland type heads which flow about the same as rectangle port BBC heads.

"It was always my understanding that all the 67 were base models, with Z\28 performance parts. Was the RS package dealer added? " You could order the Z28 package together with the usual trim/appearance/comfort options, including the RS appearance package. A/C was a notable exception. I'll wager that not many were as well-optioned as this particular example

Don't do it. No matter what anyone says, just ignore them. Whatever you do, don't open any of the trunks on those muscle cars.

I don't buy all this bullshit when people claim these cars put out more horsepower than what was said they were. Put the shit on a dyno and bring it and quit singing it.

Back then horsepower ratings were made up by the marketing department and could be higher or lower than reality. Other problem is it's near impossible to find a truly stock 1960s muscle car today to get a dyno reading. All the engines are at least balanced and blueprinted if not otherwise internally improved and so put out more power and than they did off the assembly line. Same with quarter mile times which somehow are better today than they were back then.
