1965 USAC Champ Car Series Atlanta Championship 250 at Atlanta International Raceway

The 1965 Atlanta Championship 250 at Atlanta International Speedway was the 9th race of the 1965 USAC Champ Car Series session which took place on August 1, 1965!

    Great racing back then. It was probably the last asphalt track race where front engine roadsters and dirt cars out numbered the rear engine cars. The reason was that there were many who still felt the track would be harder on the rear engine cars suspensions..(Foyt example) and that since it was a stock car track for the most part, the heavier roadsters would fair better...which they did...6 of the top 10 spots were front engines. I actually saw Andretti's front engine earlier at Trenton in April '65. Thanks for the post.

    Today AJ Foyt would be accused of cheating. They’d say how else could he be so dominant in this race. He cheated. The fact that he didn’t cheat is irrelevant.

    I loved the old configuration of the Atlanta Motor Speedway with its quarter-mile straights and half-mile turns . . . a true

    Johnny Rutherford driving the #2 car was owned by Bob Wilke, where up to that time the Wilke car had been driven by Rodger Ward. The bit of online info has it that Ward left the Wilke team after failing to qualify for the 1965 Indy 500.

    Finally.I have been waiting for to post.I was 12 when my dad and some friends went to see this. The thing about this race was rear engine cars , roadsters and old dirt cars plus Novis
