1965 Mustang Steering Box Removal with Engine In

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I haven't found a video that shows someone removing the steering box from a 1965 or 1966 (or for that case, early 1967) Mustang with the engine in. I know it can be done and I've heard many different ways to do it. But actually seeing it being done is completely different. I tried to document all the things I removed (the goal being to remove as little as possible) and the different steps we took. I think in the end the key was removing the column which allows the steering shaft to be able to move around more and jacking up and levering the engine out of the way. It doesn't take much, inches but after that it was actually pretty easy. We did the hard part for you so sit back and enjoy!

It can be done. I did one on a 66 coup yeeeeeears ago. I believe that the exhaust manifold had to come out. I wanna say it came out of the top. Removing the colum tube completely really helped. I have to do one on my 65 fastback next week. Hats off to these guys. Great Job. Ps. I’m cutting the shaft off the box to get the old one out. The real work is getting the new one in. Cross fingers.

The exhaust is one variable. I have Hedman shorties so I think that allowed me to come out the top. But I’ve heard that some people could come out the top with the stock manifold. I know it sounds like more work but if you take it out in one piece then you know which way the new one goes back in.

Appreciate the video, I have a 67 that I need to do this on. Unfortunately I decided to upgrade to WilWood disc brakes and now have a booster and master cylinder in the way. Any tips? Probably have to remove those to accomplish this job. 😢

You know, it really wasn’t that bad. I thought it was going to be way worse. Thankfully you don’t need to do it very often. And the new box is really nice. Totally worth it.

If the box is worn out and junk. Why don’t you cut the shaft with a grinder w cut off blade. Now the only work will be to install the new one

Because taking it out whole would prove that it would go back in whole.
