How To: Remove & Replace A '65 to Early-'67 Mustang Steering Gear Box

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The original steering box on my 1966 Shelby GT350 has pushed all of the grease out the end and the plug is missing. But more importantly, it was severely worn and had excessive play in the box. I'll be retaining the original part as I am with all of the original parts I'm upgrading on the car, and if I (or a future owner decades from now) want to restore the car with all of it's correct parts, they will be waiting.
The 65-67 cars with the long steering shafts are notable for being more difficult to change the steering box on because they are pretty unwieldy to maneuver out of the car. You have to disassemble the steering column and take the main tube loose to get the box out of place, and doing this job with the engine in the car is not impossible, but it's also not pleasant, so this needed to be done while the engine was out of the car and I'm cleaning things up.
I show the important steps and the tools you'll need to do the job with ease, and it's really not bad with everything out of the way. I also take the steps to show you how to center the box so that you can put the steering wheel on in the correct position on the shaft and get the full steering range lock to lock.
