The song was sung originally by the Appalachian Angel Anita Carter, Junes sister. Her original version is really good too. I only live about a hour away from the Carter Family Fold . Me and my late uncle used to go there on weekends and see the live shows.

In 1959 my father bought the second Falcon ever sold in the United States in Tampa, Florida; his first brand new car. It was originally intended to for sale in Bermuda where horns were not allowed. Thus, it had a bell actuated by a plunger on the floor. He spent several miles going “ding-dong” while trying tying turn on the high-beams!

I think that 1963 may have been Ford Motor Company's best year for styling. Every vehicle that they produced, from Falcon through Lincoln Continental, was just beautiful.

63 was a great year in general GT hawk Avanti Grand Prix and well all of them lol

I haven't visited for a while - but Jay, you've made my day!! This is one of my fave cars!! Our Aussie Falcon was based on this. And while i much prefer our own '64, '65 & '66 hardtops, the American 1963 Falcon was a stunning car!! Thanks for showing!!

In Australia we got the standard and Futura hardtops, but not the Sprint and no convertibles. From '67 onwards no more hardtops, just sedans, wagons with two trim levels, plus utes and vans.

I was eleven yrs old when My Dad sold these falcons at his Ford Dealership. I got to help wash and wax cars and wonder around like a kid. God what wonderful days. Wish I could go back and do it again. My Dad unfortunately had many heart attacks and died when I was at college. Love you Dad and loved your cars. falcons, mustangs, galaxie fairlanes, thunderbirds/ at Blountsville Ind. near Muncie. Dad was a dealer from 1934 to 1964.

It was very sporty to drive! Low center of gravity and tight to the road. This model originally had 13" wheels.

Really nice rare convertible falcon one of my favorite

My uncle had a white 63 Falcon convertible with red vinyl seats. I have fond memories as a ten year old riding in the car on the way to swimming, sitting on a towel to protect my legs from being scorched by the hot Phoenix sun. My uncle had replaced an English Sunbeam sports car with the Falcon which I think was more practical and comfortable.

I try to shoot this channel in first person as if you’re looking at the car. I think it’s absolutely awesome. I can’t wait until this summer. I’m hoping to at least go for some rides. I have my drivers license I know how to drive it insurance is why I don’t get the drive a lot of the cars and I’m totally fine with that I would rather, sit behind the person driving to give you a first person experience of what the car is like =) I also worked at a Classic Car dealership last year well year before last year now, and found out that two cars can buy identical and every single way but they’ll drive totally different because different things were out

My high school friend had one. (Class of 65) I thought it was cool then, and still do today.

My first car, bought used in April 1973, was a 1963 Ford Falcon Futura Hardtop with the same red interior as this car but with white exterior. I was at the end of the 1st year of college in Northern NJIt only had 67,000 miles on it. Only a week after I got it, gas prices shot up from 35.9-37.9/gallon to 43.9-47.9 gallon as a preliminary to the November 1973-June 74 'fuel crises' hit and prices go into the upper 40's Cent/gallon range. Yes, mine had rust issues, including the top of the gas tank, also the floor of the trunk (same as the 1st Gen Mustang) so the interior smelled of gas fumes. It needed a lot of work on the engine as burned oil. I had it for about a year until it got into a sideswipe crash and while derivable, the drivers side door couldn't be opened. I actually took the engine out for someone else's Falcon and used a friend's truck to take it to the scarp yard. It was also among the last cars to have a manual choke.

My Mom owned a 1965 Falcon which she kept until 1979. It was a base model 2 door with post. My cars of choice would be the Corvair and Lark. Another car comparable to the Falcon would be the Chevy II Nova.

I want to thank you so much for this episode! This was my fun car that I loved, worked on, and drove for years. I had the 170 ci Special with a 4 speed manual in a convertible body. It was an amazingly good looking cheap car to run and so much fun to drive on windy hilly roads with the top down. There were steel plates to stiffen the frame that gave it a good low center of gravity. It never let me down until the unibody was killed by internal rust after over 200,000 miles. The sun visors are small so that they don't flap around when the top is down. There is no dome light, but there is a courtesy light under the front dash to light up the interior. I also found the chrome trim wraparound inside to have a nice unifying look that made such a budget model look more expensive. Top speed of the 170 ci Special engine was indeed 91 mph. I think the 4 speed manual got you there maybe 2 seconds quicker. The bench seat was very comfortable and great on date nights for sitting close. I of course would pick only the Falcons, but you put up stiff competition with the other cars offered. Thanks again for doing this car justice and bringing back fond memories!

@@user-vx1xm9cd8g; The 289 Hi-Po first intoduced in the 1963 Fairlane with single exhaust. The Falcon was never a high perfornce unit. The 289 2 bl. or 302 2 bl. was plenty good enough for the Falcon according to Henry II. They wanted the gear heads to go with the 1968-1969 Cobra. Weird that in 68" thru 69" you could get a 428 Fairlaine 500 that wasn't a Cobra. Watch out for fakes, they are everywhere. 428 in a Fairlane doesn't mean anything except it's a rare Thunderjet 428 in a numbers matching Fairlaine, maybe. Why put Cobra badges on a 68"-69" 428 Fairlaine, 500, or Torino GT when the plain old ordinary 428 Fairlane 500 might be even more rare. Fairlaine Cobra's are the biggest fakeries in the muscle car world.

There were 289 hi-pos fit to seven or so Canadian-built Falcons in 1965.

Our neighbor in my home town had a 1960 Falcon Station Wagon 4 Door 6 Cylinder 3 on the tree she bought new. Still had it when she passed away. Brown with a white top and vinyl seats.

This was the first new car that my Grandmas family had after they came to the states in the 50s, she was cheap enough for the family to afford and reliable enough to take my grandma and great aunt to through highschool and then eventually refinance a it few times to put them through college. Honestly I wish there was something like this that I could buy, cheap enough and reliable enough for a college student to afford while also being large enough to fit all my friends and eventually a small family

My first ever vehicle was a 10 yr old, 1963 Falcon 4 door wagon. Equipped with the aforementioned 170 CI engine and the two speed automatic. The one special feature the car had was the power window in the rear liftgate. The car served me well for about two years while I saved up enough money to buy something a bit more substantial (and not as nerdy). I can attest to that top speed figure given and I'm saying nothing more on that topic!

Jay In 1969 I bought for $50.00 a 63 Futura 2door hardtop, it was white with Red interior and lots of interior crome,. It was originally a 260 cid but I got it without an engine, so I built a 289 4bbl for it. in High school auto shop class.. I had the same Tach and guage setup great memories and a great car.

As I wrote earlier, my father owned a 1963 Ford Falcon, 4-door. He was so proud of it. The body styling was like the Futura, except it was a nice blue color and a hard-top, with lots more room in the back. Of course, my sister was just born and I was 4 or 5 years old, but I remember the plastic seat covers that stuck to my legs when I wore shorts. It had no A/C, and probably was a mid-grade 6 cylinder with automatic transmission, which was a better deal for the time. I loved the simplicity of the grill, the chrome bumpers, and the round tail lights (rocket styling). The interior was much the same as the Futura, too, except it was blue, and a nice dash. It got pretty good gas mileage. With both scenarios, I chose the 63 Ford Futura.

What a great episode. I have loved Falcons from the get go. We only had one in the family - one of my uncles had a base model 63 two-door wagon - but oh the fun we had with that lil’ wagon. I was so Falcon obsessed as a little kid that, when I got my first real bike, I saw a bike taillight that looked just like a miniature first generation Falcon taillight. Had to have it, and my dad got it for me. I called my bike my Falcon. I remember going through the Sears Wish Book one Christmas and seeing that you could order sweatshirts with your favorite pro football team logo. I had no interest in pro ball at the time, but when I saw the sweatshirt for the Atlanta Falcons, I had to have it. I still go nuts anytime I see a Falcon. In scenarios 1 and 2, I’d take the Falcon. No question. Thanks Jay!

This is one of those few times in which, for WYR, I will take ALL of them, thank you. I really like the 1963 lineups for most makes. Out of any Falcon ever produced, I like the '63 the best. I agree when you say the Mustang overshadowed these cars, especially this year.... definitely a nice pre-Mustang car.

63 was a great year for cars I could have also added the amc American sometimes I draw blanks just to realize later the ones I missed =)

I'll take the 63 Falcon Justin because our family had a 63 Falcon 2dr Station Wagon from 1963 to 1970 growing up and we used to ride in the back going to the drive in movies on Staten Island then in 1970 my father got rid of the wagon because it was falling apart and bought a new 1970 Torino GT. not a family car and only kept it less then a year before going back to a wagon which was a used 1967 Buick Skylark Sport wagon with the windows on the roof. thanks Justin.

I was only thirteen at the time, I thought that car was like a small T-Bird. It was solid and quite a sporty ride. Unfortunately, my Brother had a few mishaps with the car, and after he got married, he let the bank have it. But his new Wife had a 1962 Chevrolet Impala Convertible. His next car was a 1966 Plymouth Fury VIP. Very nice.

These have always been one of my favorites. I think they are such cool , sporty little rides! In the WYR, I'd go with the Futura, even though the Monza is really nice, and is the turbo. In the second, all are really great IMO, but I'd go with the Tempest. Cool video 😎

The Falcon Fords overall champ of the 1960s

In the late 80s I bought the most plain 63 falcon. 6 cylinder 3 speed on the column no radio no power brakes Nothing The below basement model. I cleaned it up an updated a few items and it would deliver 28 mpg and a working heater. Sold it to an old guy who thrilled with it. He drove it to a local bar almost every day to get his allowed 2 beers and drove back home.

I owned the '65 Australian XP Futura hardtop with the 170cid engine & 3 speed manual. It was a cool car, I should have put it under a cover and kept it, but of course when we were young, we had to sell our existing car to buy the next upgrade.

I had a 63 two-door hardtop Futura, with a 170 special and three on the tree. It was built, simple and rugged, extremely dependable little car. I would buy a brand new one today if they would make it, not like the cars of today, too many engine problems, transmission problems recalls all kinds of problems, manufacturers forgot one thing, "keep it simple"

What a nice example...and who doesn't love a red convertible! Fun fact: all Falcon convertibles have power tops as standard equipment, something that was optional on the Mustang until 1970, when it became standard. These are great, simple, reliable cars. I could certainly do without that ratchet shifter, though. Ugh. I'll take the Falcon in both cases.

My best friend had a Falcon. What an odd car. First, it completely defeated me in trying to operate its stick shift (and I owned a 62 VW Beetle!). Second…it burned oil at such a rate that he carried a case of oil in the trunk. Finally….you can guess this, is smoked from the pipe, as well as from the engine compartment. That being said….it was fun.

I had a 62 four doors 170 three on three , ditch that for a 200 in line, 6 automatic 3.50 8 inch rear axle . Drove it to work for 20 years Not that on fuel top speed maybe 95 miles an hour, but could hold 85 miles an hour almost in any hills was a great car . If i drove highway have around 65 miles an hour got 26 miles a gallon or more I missed the car.

@@What.its.like.Last year of the "real Falcon" (short wheelbase), 302 2bl., big thick bucket seats, square tail lights like on 69' Fairlaine and Torino. Doesn't look that much different, really, than earlier Falcon's. Not a screamer by any means, but light and peppy enough. 302 2bl. (reg gas) was most powerfull engine ever available for the Falcon, probably rated about 220 hp and last forever and a day.

Fantastic little Ford 👏👏 WYR Pontiac, Studebaker 🤔 But all are great cars 😊 Great Episode 👏👏👏 Happy Motoring ✌️🤠

Falcon rancheros are really cool keep looking I don’t know if you’re on Facebook marketplace sometimes you can find really good deals on there. It’s like the new craigslist you could see what the people look like before you go and see the car and if they look shady, then you could either take somebody with you or find a different vehicle. Sometimes you get really lucky and a family member or whatever passes on and their family doesn’t have a clue what they have and they sell it for unbelievable prices every year I get on in the spring time and I find at least one silver hawk for $5000 that car is worth triple that in decent shape

144 and 170 cubic inch engines had 4 main bearings not 7. The 200cu inch 6cyl was offered in the Mustang in late 1964, Falcons, Fairlanes & Mavericks among others. It had 7 mains and carried on 'till the 80s in Fox bodied Fairmounts, Zephyrs, Granadas. It was the mainstay 6cyl for the smaller Ford products.

Hi Jay!: The Falcon was a spiffy little car! Don't really hate the mods on the one you show, as a 289 is a fit for a car that had the 260, which are probably getting hard to find these days. And since they updated the wheels with some Magnum 500's, attention was more than likely paid to the brakes also. That red one would be a quite fun car to own and drive. Both the advantages (and disadvantages) of owning a Convertible to be considered, of course. WYR's #1 Falcon (nothing against the Corvair Spyder, I just like the styling of the 1964 better than the '63) #2 STUDEBAKER LARK BABY!! Love those cars, especially with the V-8 engines.

I usually try to steer clear of cars that have a lot of modifications or aren’t original, but this one was so nice not to show I’m not sure if it was a real futura because it did not have bucket seats or the console but I really do like the wheels they sold the car before I could post the video. I still have stuff from two times ago. I’m going back Wednesday not today, but next Wednesday in a week and then I think I’m doing something at the Gilmore in April I can’t wait for that. That is going to be a highlight of the year for sure. =) Awesome choices

I love the styling of these old cars. There is something about these old cars, they have a certain class that you just don't see anymore. As far as the would you rather is all of the above an option? Lol, although I have the Oldsmobile version of that 63 Tempest, hence my channel name.

My first car was a 1963 Ford Falcon Futura Convertible. It was Oxford Blue with a white top. I had the 170 ci I-6 cylinder engine and 3 speed manual transmission with a column mounted gearshift. I had mine in excess of 95 mph. The car in the video is a restromod. The 289 wasn't available on the 63. The floor shift would have been on the 63 1/2 Sprint, but not available on any other models. The wheels on the first generation Falcons had four lug nuts, this car has five. The gas cap is an aftermarket gas cap. It is not the same cap that came standard on Falcons. The 289 V8 in this car looks like it was a modified or a more modern engine than the engines that Ford produced from 65 thru 68. I had a 68 Falcon with a 289. It looked to me like your camera strap had gotten in the way if you had moved it, I think you could have closed the glove box door, but those were small compartments. As for the scenarios, I would pick the Falcons in both, although that Studebaker would make a great second choice.

Not correct. V8 equipped 1963 Falcons had 13 inch 5 lug wheels (though this was originally an I6 car). Only 4 speed was on floor, this is an auto that was moved to floor. That is the correct has cap for Futura and Sprint in 63.

Dielectrically heat sealed mylar door panels on the Furura - they tend not to wear well after 60 years (or even 10), but they looked cool. The 60-63 Falcon was the quintessential cheap and cheerful car, and very nicely styled - they didn't muck it up too much with the facelifts and actually the 61-63 front end was an improvement over the rather gaping mouth on the 60. WYR: 1) Corvair Sypder, 2) Tempest - given the car pictured is a LeMans V8, which means the 326, and that would blow away a stock Falcon 260 in real world period road tests. Not as pretty though. I made the pilgrimage to CAM today. Interesting. NOTE: 'you' most emphatically cannot get into the cars, and maybe 20-25% are roped off so your photos will suffer some - especially for interior details. A couple 'showrooms' were closed (more project cars than finished in these). Brought a check with me as they had a first gen Taurus SHO, and since I had one back in the day, I thought 'maybe'. Seems to be gone. 67 4 door T-brid I liked, but at 24k it would have to absolutely ace a mechanical/functional inspection and I wouldn't put too much stock in the representations here. They did claim a 428, and it was loaded - mmm, maybe I'll think about it. No bargains, a few reasonable prices and a fair amount of 'are you kidding???' Maybe that the consigners' expectations rather than retail price setting, in which case, some of these things are going to sit a long, long time. No food for purchase other than vending machines - I'll bet hot dogs would pay for themselves. Connected to a Holiday Inn but but no one eating in that restaurant and one could just imagine the wait time (what, we have turn on the kitchen?) There is a McDonalds somewhat adjacent. Worth a visit.

That’s so awesome that you went there. I’m hoping to go back next week. They got a lot of cool cars in like I’ve been looking for a four-door Thunderbird to do. I’ve never seen one in person price shown in a lot of cases they’ll work on price I’m sure they leave room to negotiate… I live 5 1/2 hours away from there. I generally go to Shady Maple, which is a huge buffet which is on the way there for me. WYR 1: All of them. WYR 2: All of them. The best way to prevent rust on a vehicle is to either undercoat it properly, live in a dry climate, or not have a vehicle at all. That last option doesn't work as well nowadays as it did a few hundred years ago.

That was a very...manic commercial from the 60s 😂 I always thought the Thunderbird with that pointed front was so lovely. All other Fords then looked...meh, sort of plain. Love the round taillight/reverse lights though.

This was originally an inline six car, all those fit with V8 from factory had automatic choke. As an I6 car it lacks the torque boxes taken from Fairlane and used by Ford on all V8 Falcons. It would have also then had 4 lug wheels so this car has been converted to 5 lug, a good thing. Original 63 V8 Falcons were fit with 5 lug wheels but only little 13 inchers by Ford.

Great choices No lie the first time I went there it was over whelming I have ADD ( never been diagnosed but I’m sure I have it also dyslexic) so it’s hard sometimes even when shooting a car and see something in the back of the room that catches your eye knowing can only do 25-30 cars in one day 5.5 hour drive to get to classic auto mall sort of have jet lag after doing 10 cars. You guys only see the finished product might put some bloopers in I say some interesting things lol

Not exactly, Falcon wheelbase is an inch and a half (109.5 bs 108) longer, all behind driver seats. A commonly repeated error.

Same layout like no frame and four wheels? The unibody is a different length, folks continuously and erroneously think that it’s just different exterior sheet metal and that just ain’t the case.

@@markhale8084 Yes the length is only difference. They also use same unibody on Cougars, Mavericks,/Comets, Granada/Monarachs, Versailles ( likely most stretched of all the Falcon unibody design ) and Im sure there is some more but that off the top o my head. Im also pretty sure Pinto/Bobcat is same unibody too just much smaller. Yes the sheet metal was made to fit the smaller and stretched models.

Rather plain styling but it was definitely the most conventional of the 1960 big 3 compacts. And I believe the most popular in the beginning. I remember a bunch on the road in the 60’s. Dodge & Plymouth matched it with the 63 Dart and Valiant, Chevy with the Chevy II (65?). I don’t count the Tempest, Skylark & F85, each a bit unconventional, plus a higher class.

This is a nice example. I'd prefer an all-original car but I'll bet this one would be a lot more fun to drive than an original. Because it's not original if I had this I would put disc brakes on the front and probably leave everything else as is. I would rather have the 1963 Corvair Monza Sypder and the 1963 Pontiac Tempest. The Lark is a close second.

Great choices I tried to feature as close to original cars as possible. I’m not even sure if this was a real futura because the lack of bucket seats and console.. but I will add the bench seat was really comfortable. It might’ve been one of the best bench sheets I ever sat on

Very much so I’ve come to like gun metal gray with red interior. I think that’s a really nice combo.

Very basic inexpensive car that would run many years if cared for and not driven hard. I suspect its top speed and highway performance was better than the contemporary VW Bug but the Bug might have given it a good race from zero to 20 or so mph. I think the Falcon had much better heat in winter than the Bug. I thought the basic tiny six cylinder engine only had 4 main bearings and was originally used in agricultural equipment or wood chippers. As I remember it was quite a bit smaller looking than the much more powerful 199 engine used in some 1966 Ramblers, (Of course not fair to compare the 1960 - 1963 Falcon with the newer 1966 Rambler.)

Of course the average Ford Falcon in 1963 didn't look much like this one with all the non-original interior do-dads & engine that would not have been on a '63 Falcon. Many of these were bought in the suburbs back then as economical second cars, usually with one of the 6-cylinder motors and 3-speed manual gearbox or else Fordomatic.

Totally agree most had 6 cylinders ford ads claim 32 mpg with 144 six but that engine is said to be gutless This one was nice seats were pushy for econo box car

The interior is exactly how it looked new from the factory without the dimpling of the silver on the door panels. The 144 was gutless but the 170 was great and really good on gas. @@What.its.like.

I believe that 'dash pad' is just that ... a pad. And it's definitely aftermarket. I remember (1st person) those dashboards being solid metal. No mercy.

The ad for this car said it has a 302 not a 327. So the owner stuck a 327 badge on it (first fishy clue). Looking at your different camera angles, I can tell the paint job is not very good with lots of flaws and orange peel texture. I hope whomever bought this car inspected underneath very carefully looking for rust or bad rust repair!! Also, I would have throughly inspected the body of this car with a magnet because I have a feeling it's loaded with bondo. I don't mean to be so critical, but this car scares the hell out of me. I smell something fishy, and I'm usually right. It has all the signs. I've lost count at 83 cars/trucks that I've owned over 50+ years and have seen some real doozys. By the way, the Mustang was based on the Falcon chassis. So basically a Mustang is a Falcon with a different body.

​@@What.its.like.-- Oops!! You're right, 289. I just had finished watching a video about a Chevy Nova II with a 327 engine and had that on my mind when I wrote the comment above, LOL. That's what happens when you get old and it's late at night. Still though, I have my doubts about the condition of that car and hope the new owner didn't get taken. I could be completely wrong, but the signs are there and I've seen to many.
