6:28 Interesting how the cat-eye design of the instrument panel pods would be copied one year later for the '62's tail lights

Love Oldsmobile but the Starfire was the car. Can you imagine a 455 W-30 out of a 70 Toronado GT. I believe all Starfires came with leather

They came with Glasspak mufflers from factory for 1961 and 1962..chrome valve covers 345 horse amazeing INTIERIORS. 440 foot pounds TORQUE..394 cubic inch...it is ...the right engine..some came with 3 2bbl carbs in the 62 model..was a performance car of its day..on the 88 platform. Speedo goes from green to yellow to red color past 60mph...

The '61 Oldsmobile in general was an improvement over the un-Oldsmobile, non-descript looking '60. I like the Starfire best, of course, and this car is really beautiful. My own preference is the '62 Oldsmobile (regular and Starfire) over the '61. The '62 owes a lot TO the '61 of course, but it has a refined perfection to it in the front end, but particularly in the rear. Along the sides (of the Starfires) both years were perfect.

Not every one needed a muscle car in that year ...but if muscle was taken shape it was in this car when muscle began also it's cousin Pontiac..

pretty car, but the very tall rear end makes more for highway cruising than all 'round driving around town. wheel covers are not the best. sounds and looks great though. are those smithy glasspacks?

Definitely one of mine too. I also really like the '62-'66 Starfires a lot too. The problem with the '65 & 6 is that in convertible form you lose the sexy, concave rear window that's so beautiful. You still have the beautiful lower body with the distinctive front and rear end, but without that roofline, it loses something important. That's also true with the '63 & '64 too, actually. In any event, I've NEVER liked the first generation Toronado at all, Gary. The Riviera's, yes, but not the Toronado. I didn't really love them until the 1979-'85 models.

That is so true Gary. I'm glad Oldsmobile expanded the Starfire in '62 to include the hardtop as well. In my own opinion (as great as the '61 is) the '62 brought it up to a real level of perfection. The front end to some extent, but much more so on the rear end and taillights. The siding of both years is perfect.

I agree, it's a performance personal luxury car. One of GM's answers to compete with the 4-seat T-Bird established in 1958. One of the problems with "muscle" cars is that they've largely elbowed out the amazing full-size cars at local auto shows. I love the '69 Camaro, various generations of the Mustang, the Challenger. The '57 Chevy is still my favorite car, but I'd like to start seeing a lot more variety than the tri-5 and muscle cars at car shows.
