When this car was introduced in late 65, I was working part time at the Olds dealership in my town. The first one delivered was the deep burgundy color, stunning, loaded with options. The service manager put it up on the hoist and he was "blown away" by how stout the drivetrain was. The build quality and engineering were first rate at that time. I got to drive them periodically to deliver to customers and in the shop and loved these cars. My dad purchased a 66 Delta 88 coupe which was similar styling, and I loved that car too. Great memories, sad to see GM abandoning autos for SUVs. They frequently have taken designs to the nth degree, then dropped them as they reached their pinnacle. Not long after Roger Smith took over GM and destroyed quality and individuality. Now Olds no longer exists, though I owned many in my time.

I think GM quality began its decline in the late 1970s when the downsizing began. Not that losing weight and improving economy was the issue but the bean counters went for disposable over reliability.

@@dougn2350 Every American manufacturers quality started going downhill in the early '70's. They didn't have the engineering expertise to handle the new government mandates for lower emissions and safety. The stylists hadn't figured out how to make an attractive car with shock absorbing bumpers. Then in 1978 they downsized the cars which eliminated the huge proportions and excessive weight of previous years which was the start of becoming more fuel efficient. In my opinion the quality started improving as well as the handling ability around '78. The quality didn't improve very much though until the '90's when Japanese cars started to take over a big chunk of the market. I bought a '67 Toronado in 1969 with about 20,000 miles on it. That was probably the most luxurious car I have ever owned!

I purchased a new 1966 Toronado from a Beverly Hills dealer, White Black leather interior with all of the available options. I paid $5,500.00 for it. I drove it for 10 years, it was a fun car to drive, even took on a couple of rally’s as it handled like a sports car. It was also built like a tank, a lady driving a Volkswagen Beatle made a left turn in front of me the Olds hit the front end of the Beatle and crushed it flat, split the gas tank splayed the front wheels out and flat to the street. There was no damage to the Toronado when I backed off, the police were surprised at the amount of damage to the VW and none to my car.

The 1966 Toronado has always been my favorite car ever. I was 9 years old when it came out, and I just couldn't stop looking at photos of it in my Motor Trend magazine. I still have the well-worn issue after all these years. I also like its sister car, the 1967 Cadillac Eldorado, but Toronado was, and still is, my favorite. Your car, in the mist green color, is absolutely beautiful!!

I owned a '66 back around 1974-75, when it was less than 10-years old. This video brought back some memories, especially the interior shots. I bought it from a co-worker, as I recall for $2500. And I was taking home less than $100/week. I only owned it for about a year. The CV joints were on their way out and I was quoted $800 each to replace them! So, a $1600 job for a guy taking home $5K/year. It was fun while it lasted. I'm a lot more into cars today than I was then. In a similar situation today, I possibly would've found the funds to get the job done. But, with a car like that it's probably going to be a series of extraordinarily expensive repairs. Fine for a car guy with the green, as your home indicates you are. Your car is great, thanks for the video.

I use to own a 1966 Toronado back in the early 80's. I bought one from an Olds dealership for around $600. It was very driveable off the dealer lot too. If I remember it did have a few issues. The oil pan gasket had a little leak, the throttle linkage would stick sometimes. The valve cover gaskets had some leakage too. After changing all the seals and installing a new exhaust system from the manifold to the tail pipes and changing all the rear shocks including the horizontal shock absorbers, it was ready. The drum brakes only received new shoes. I looked for a deserted road and accelerated the Toro over the century mark and was quite impressed considering it's age. I should have kept it. I miss my '66 Toro.

The owner spent a few hundred dollars to pay for some under the hood work at the dealership. I towed her home and a few hundred more dollars and a couple of weekends later me and the Landshark were cruising in style. I still miss my living room on wheels. Best Landyacht of the day.

My dad and I were always big Lincoln Mercury people but when we were in Colorado before moving to Texas my Mother insisted on getting a dark blue 1966 Toronado , the car was nothing but problems and Dad hated it. The car wore out shocks all the time and the pistons even melted when we took it on vacation yet Mother loved it and wouldn't part with it. Dad later bought a 1969 Continental Mark III which was twice the car of the Oldsmobile and never faltered in any way. Despite the problems The Toronado drew tremendous attention everywhere we went and people liked the styling very much and many would ask what it was. Mother rented a 1967 Cougar XR7 once and liked it a great deal , Dad had his fingers crossed that she would trade the Toronado for one but she continued to drive it for eight years.

Simply incredible. One of my fav cars of all time, and the color is perfect. This had styling WAY ahead of its time!!! Look at the rear corner view - that fastback styling doesn't look like a 50 year old car. Regarding the brakes... I don't think people would hate on you for doing the logical thing and switching to a dual master cylinder for the brakes. A friend did so with his '66 Impala due to the same concerns you have. I have a 1967 Pontiac Parisienne, and this also has drum brakes for all four wheels, but it has the "new for '67" dual master cylinder and proportioning valve. The braking power with four huge drums is excellent!! Maybe look for something like this for an important safety mod for your beautiful car. Too much to risk losing if you lose a flex line or master cylinder piston.

I've always thought that this was one of the very closest 'near misses' from a stylistic standpoint. The 3/4 view is incredible, and the flared wheel arches really add to the overall muscular stance. Like the front end and the homage to Cord both there and in the wheels, but the front overhang is 'just' a tad too long. It spoils the proportions every so slightly. (I do realize they had a tough packaging job and as it was the UPP was innovative). The same overhang styling theme was applied to the regular 67 full sized line with - I think - even less success, and was toned down on those models for 68.

Oh YES you’re correct! The clock on just about all 60s cars had the tick tick movement of the second hand. I took converted mine to quartz. I had the original wind up type redone in 1987 but it never kept good times after a day or so. Off MINUTES not seconds. I tried the setting it back etc. that does nothing really. So the quartz at least keeps perfect time. Some things don’t bother me. I’d rather a clock That keeps proper time then a jumpy second hand that isn’t accurate. Many purists like the snap sound every 1-2 minutes. I found it annoying lol

I'm old enough to remember drum brakes all too well. You were usually ok unless you were going downhill. If you were, you had to put all you had into pushing that pedal and hope to stop in time. I came way too close for comfort to crashes even on bridges in very flat Detroit way too many times. Ford and Chrysler were offering disk brakes by 1966, but GM wasn't, except for the 4-wheel disks on the Corvette.

My first two cars both had manual drum brakes and stopping them after going through a puddle was an adventure. You had to pump the brakes to get the water off the shoes otherwise nothing would happen. All my other cars starting with a new 1974 Dodge Dart have had power front disc brakes and they are much better. My 1988 Toyota Camry could literally stop on a dime the braking system among other things was ahead of its time on that car.

What your Toronado guys told you about the transmission/drive package was mistaken- it did not come from the Eldorado. It was developed by Oldsmobile engineers, who had been experimenting with front wheel drivetrains for years prior to the introduction of the Toronado in 1965 (1966 model year). The drive system they came up with was a remarkable engineering achievement. It was not only compact enough to fit in an engine compartment not specially enlarged for the purpose, but the engineers also managed to almost completely eliminate the torque steer one would expect in a front drive car with an enormously powerful and torquey V-8 (I forget the technical details of how they did it). Their system was first used on the 1966 Toronado, and Cadillac subsequently adapted it to their V-8 (also 425 cubic inches I think, but I'm not sure) and used it in the 1967 ElDorado. So the FWD system did not come from Cadillac and the Eldorado to be installed in the Toronado- it was the other way around.

Beautiful example of the 66’. Can tell you really like the Toro. Can’t blame you a bit. Only thing a lot of people think a car having certain features is quite an advancement for the time but I see it differently, I say many of today’s advancements aren’t anything new. Lol Anyway you have a fine automobile there. Beautiful but to get the entire effect one has to drive a ‘66 Oldsmobile Toronado. That 425 is powerfully smooth

Nice Toronado. My brother -in law had a gold '66, a silver '72 and a gold '75 that he kept for about 10 years & drove it for almost 200k without major repairs. Gorgeous cars that seemed to be bullet proof. Pity the automakers now are designing cookie cutter vehicles that look the same. I'm glad I was around for the great era of car design from the late 40s to the early 70s.

A minor correction. You mentioned “pneumatic” operation of the headlights several times. This is actually incorrect. These work on ABSENSE of air (vacuum operated) the vacuum creates the suction force to open them and when shut off there’s a big spring In the headlight actuators that once vacuum is off pushes the piston UP which in turn closes the headlamp doors. I’ve owned my 66 Toro since 1984 and have serviced them several times!

People often use the term Pneumatic and vacuum interchangeably, but as you know it’s different. On the brakes ….. a few years ago I redid entire system, master, booster, lines, hoses, hardware drums, etc. even then it will stop ok from highway speeds maybe 2-3 times after then you must leave at least 5-6 car lengths to be safe!! Also, local driving with red lights every other block, or stop signs fade becomes apparent VERY quickly ! That aside, these are fun cars to drive and handle well for what they are. I daily drove mine 1998-2001 NY Snow and I can tell you it’s a monster in the snow!! I called it a bulldozer!! Lol. Great car you have enjoy it!!!! Happy motoring my friend! - Phil NYC

The '66 Toranado did incorporate a futuristic "no vent windows, look" With GM, the Chevorlet Nova was the last car to have this window feature, after 1972 Chevorlet finally eliminated the "side-vent windows on the '73-'74 Novas and up....

Beautiful car! I have a 66 Toronado. There are lots of things I want to do with it. 4 wheel disc brakes to start. There is not much info on a proper disc brake conversion. The Olds Club and Toronado Club have mentioned it over the years, though it is always a mix of junkyard parts from this or that car, and lots of "maybe this will work". It would be great it there was a kit of new parts to do the disc brake conversion. Does anyone have any info on a front or 4 wheel disc brake kit?

  • @thaddupper2982

    @thaddupper2982

On www.toronado.org there are several detailed posts on front brake conversions to disc. But you are correct you need to get spindles from a newer toro or eldorado. And the drum brake wheels won’t fit over the calipers so then you need to get disc wheels. As far as a kit I would love that but I don’t think anyone will market one due to low demand. My plan is to keeps the drum brakes but put in a ‘68 dual master and booster.

Yes, I've got a 66 with the same interior and can attest that those seats aren't original, would have been vinyl and fabric. I purchased about 6 yards of the vinyl (the correct dye lot) a few years back and it was the last of the inventory.

You mention the brakes a lot, but that was the technology then. You do not mention disc brakes as an option and I do not know if they were offered on this car or not. We had a ‘68 Pontiac LeMans that had manual drum brakes and it was a white knuckler to stop as well. It did have, though, the option for power front disc, but my dad passed on it. After we got the car and drove it a while, he realized his error.

senorkaboom hi, no disc brakes were not an option on the 66 Toronado. Some owners add them but it is a complex process you need new spindles and the rotors and of course a new master cylinder et al from a later year Toronado or eldorado. Plus the wheels don’t fit so you need to get new wheels.
