My father once worked at a Chrysler dealership in the early 60's and we lived right next to it. I was fortunate to see the new models coming in and the used or trade-ins on the lot. The owner was nice to us and would let me and my brother walk through the lot, wide eyed and saying 'Wow...look at this!' Back then, we knew every car make/model that came out due to the always changing designs. Building model cars was our favorite hobby.

Absolutely gorgeous. I love to think that back in the day, when someone was shopping for an expensive luxury car they would chose the Imperial over Cadillac or Lincoln. A beautifully finished, expertly engineered example of American know-how. This car was miles ahead of Rolls Royce of the day. Such a pleasure to see it! Thanks!

At the bottom of the brochure said: “IMPERIAL DIVISION of CHRYSLER CORPORATION.” NOT “Chrysler Division.” That pretty much says it all!,
Back in the mid-60’s, my neighbor Mr. Anderson had a green-colored model. I glanced the color as they breezed through the brochure in the trunk. He was a self-employed, gas station owner, also living in one of the classier homes.

This Imperial is very much a 3-D model because everything is ‘see-through’, raised, or extended away from the bulk of the car: taillights, wheel cover rings, headlight placing, even the spare tire trim on the deck lid, etc. You can tell a lot of thought went into the design, creation, and manufacturing of these. What an absolute stunning piece of automotive history. Thanks Lou for a great Saturday morning ‘treat’ as you say.

WOW! The true essence of luxury. I felt as if I should be wearing a suit and tie just to watch this video. Stunning Lou detail as always. You didn't miss a thing. Most if not all cars no longer had fins, except for Chrysler. I had a 1990 Cadillac Coupe deVille, but I saw many of them all the time. It had a killer horn as well. I prefer to drive cars that you don't see a lot of. These days, that would be pretty much anything except an SUV. There are some cars I'd be scared to drive, this is definitely one of them. It's HUGE. I loved to look around his shop, beautiful collection. Thumbs UP! The owner, Frank was a really informative too!

@@davidbroughall3782 Both the Cadillac and Imperial for 1961 had a worse design than their equivalent 1960 models. Both of them are my least favorite design from each manufacturer for the entire 1960s decade. My favorite 60s Cadillac is the 1960 then 1963 then 1964. My favorite 60s Imperial is the 1960 then 1964 - 1966 then 1969. Remarkable that Lincoln went from one of the worst looking cars ever (1958 - 1960) to one of the best ever (1961 - 1963) so quickly.
Hi Lou, I enjoyed your black beauty 61 Le Baron and thank you for showing it. From 1985 to 2006 I owned a 1963 Imperial Crown Southampton 4-door hardtop in Alabaster White and light blue leather/cloth interior. The car was purchased new in Boone, NC. I sold the car to Ken Swanson of Belvidere IL but do not know what happened to the car after that. The A/C worked fantastic (no rear A/C) and everything worked great including search tune AM radio. If one quickly tapped the search tune button on the floor the radio quickly tuned in 10kHz steps. Holding the button a bit longer caused the hybrid tube/SS radio to search to the stronger stations. The car had an electric antenna that when fully extended was very long. The radio was not only very sensitive it was highly selective and was an excellent quality AM radio with rear speaker. The electric windows were very fast and of course they worked even when the car was off and no key was in the ignition. This is one of the reasons why I kept the car locked all the time. The car had manual wing windows and did not have the "auto-pilot". Funny your trunk opening and closing creaking sounded just like my car! What I like about the 1963 vs. the 1961 is the symmetrical grille and it had a beautiful fixed and very solid hood ornament. Of course, no fins and no freestanding rear tail lights with the 1963 as they were IMO beautifully integrated into the car body, unlike the 1961 and 1962. Just as I was selling the car it needed a driveline "center bearing" that caused driveline vibration under heavy throttle. I enjoyed the 90 mph 2-3 upshift of the car! When I did that one time one of the twin A/C compressor belts flipped upside down. Of course this is a very large and wide car and that is one of the reasons why I sold it as I lost my storage space. FYI to help preserve the steering wheel from incurring solar radiation while parking outdoors I draped a blue towel over the steering wheel and kept a couple of pieces of cardboard in the creaky trunk to cover the dash. Best wishes to you and your black beauty!

I've never seen this one before - but its an amazing creative luxury car. I'm glad you put your hand behind the round almost floating do-flangy on the hubcap. That feature was kinda cool, I think. It was so - futuresque? or at least for 1961, it was futuresque. The steering wheel is kinda cool as well - and my gut feeling is, it was perhaps designed that way because - the designer thought, "Man, oh man - this random steering wheen doodle shape is so awesome, lets just do it. And as you know - The Daveman is kinda hip, so my story is close enough to reality. I'm just glad I'm so gosh-darn humble. Very interesting classic car indeedio. Loving the horn especially! When this incredible beauty launched, probably in late-September of 1960, I was 6 years old and a proud son of a Chrysler/UAW worker. Like many enthusiastic offspring of Big 3 workers, I was already familiar with most Big 3 makes and models, and had strong opinions on styling. For instance, I remember being startled and VERY disappointed by the 1961 full-size Plymouthhs & Dodges which, by almost anyone's standards, were hidious to behold...and their effect seemed even worse when comparing them to the models they replaced. Fortunately, the '61 LeBaron's styling was largely evolutionary, and the result is one of the most stunning American luxury cars I've ever seen. Great video...though some discussion of the venerable 413 under the hood would have been nice!

That trunk tire bump came from the 1953 Chrysler de Elegance show car by Ghia. The feature was an opening panel automatically opened and the spare tire raised and came out to present it to you at the back of the car. There was no trunk on the show car and Chrysler only used an impression of the tire on the trunks of their cars. Chrysler made the spare tire impressions available in the 1960 Imperial, New Yorker, 300 and the Plymouth Valiant. As a side note, for whatever reason, Chrysler did not care for the de Elegance but when VW saw the car at the Ghia studio, they fell in love with it and much of the car's styling became the VW Karmann Ghia

Hi Christopher, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Glad to read this car brings back memories of neighborhood moms cars steering wheel :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
wow. what a mix of dignity and exuberance at the same time...esp in the closing drive scene. great colors. it was quite the time...end of the Exner era, and end of the Harley Earl era too, so all the style excesses of both came to full fruition in their swan song models. I had an acquaintance with a '62 LeBaron and it was quite a ride...he drove 2 footed - always full throttle and hard on the brakes - made use of that big 'ol 413. I LOVE every single one of this guy's cars...what a collection.

My dream car...I almost bought one once for $2,800, but it wasn't running and in such dire shape I knew I couldn't afford to bring it back to its former glory and pay my tuition.

The taillights are gorgeous. What a beautiful flowing rounded smoothed tail end, especially the trunk lid. Cadillac or this? This for sure! Chrysler sure made them beautifully back then.

Some GM cars had the floor mounted radio button in the 50's. My '59 Olds super 88 had a wonderbar radio with the floor button and it worked great.

A friend of my father bought one of these NEW for $10,500 CAD. He had clear plastic seat covers made as soon as he got it. He rented it out to funeral parlours to help pay it off...as he was only making about $50/week at the time. I believe he still had it when he passed away some time after 2005. It was still looking like new at the time.

This car is big enough to have its own area code but small enough to have its own zip code. I had a buddy who had a 72 Imperial. The joke was he didn't drive it, he navigated it. Whenever he had to park it, he could never parallel park it. He had to have at least 3 spots to slip the car into much like you would with a cruise ship 😅.

OMG Lou! You scared the hell out of me when you were looking through the brochure and the pages were sticking. I thought you were going to rip them. Phew! I'm glad they didn't 😮 I have always loved Imperials from the 1964 restyle, right up to the final model early 80's Imperial Coupe that was based on the Cordoba. Beautiful cars. I can still see Mr Drysdale driving up to the Clampett's Beverly Hills estate in his Imperial 😊
