1958-1960 Ford Thunderbird - The Square Bird
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
The 1958-1960 Ford Thunderbird, carved out a special legacy in the U.S. auto market by being the first personal luxury (2-door) car. By the 1970s this personal luxury car segment which the 1958 T-Bird had originally created, was the hottest growing segment in the U.S. The 1958-1960 T-Bird is the car that McNamara created and it's special place in history will forever be preserved. This video tells the story of the history of the 1958, 1959, and 1960 T-Bird.

when I was 8 years old my neighbor bought a new 1960 Tbird I road my bike over to her house and I told her I loved her car and was going to buy it from her one day it took me till 1988 to get her to sell it to me I still own it till this day it has 61K original miles on it
MOST BEAUTIFUL CARS WERE CREATED GONE FOREVER. CALL IT PROGRESS OR WHATEVER, SUCH BEAUTY IS NOT CREATED NOWHERE TO BE SEEN NOW A DAYS. I WOULDN'T BE ASHAMED TO HAVE ONE OF 'EM AS MY DAILY DRIVER.

What has happened to our cars is NOT PROGRESS, it is DESTRUCTION.
My favourite car!🤺🇺🇸🇦🇺🦘
My dad bought my mom a new 1960 T-Bird I was 5 so don’t really remember it. I have owned 2 1966 T-Birds. Very cool cars.
The best looking t bird ever
I've watched this video a couple times since you released it and every time I learn something about me 60 J-bird
My grandpa has a 1959 T bird. Hoping someday I can buy it from him.
We had a ‘59 T-bird , baby blue, with the 430 engine. It was super fast and very comfortable. We sold it in 1963 because our son was born, what a mistake (selling the car).
I think one of my favourite American cars.
I remember my uncle's black 58' T-Bird hardtop back in the day. Quite the car.
Great video and information! My fave birds are that series and the next - 61 etc.
The 1958 Thunderbird kicked off my favorite segment of old and classic cars, the personal luxury car. Started with the 58 Thunderbird and ended with the 2002 Cadillac Eldorado, it's now the age of the SUV. This must be where they got the inspiration for the TV batmobile, this generation of t-bird is so darn cool.
My Father Dream Car was 1962 Thunderbird, He Got Me and Him a Toy One when I was 5 yrs. old. R.I.P. Poppa. (smile)
I had a 1960 T-bird when I was younger, it was such a cool car and pretty dammed fast! I wish I still had it!
I bought a 1959 coupe in 1970 when I was 16 years old. It was a great car for me, with that gas guzzling 352. It was fast, but so heavy it took a while to get it up to speed. I had it up to 122 mph on the highway. The only thing I didn't like was my GF had to sit on the console above me.
My uncle had a 63 black beauty if I remember correctly, loved that car but he always had cool cars!
I CAN STILLS REMEMBER BEENS 3 YEARS OLDS.AND PLAYING IN THE SIDEWALKS WITHS MY FREES 1958 T.BIRD TOY THATS CAME ON THE QUARTER OAK MEALS ROUNDS CANS.I DID BOUGHT A 1989 T.BIRD WITHS A V-6 AUTO TRAM.BUTS THE 1958 T.BIRD BYS FARS WAS THE BEST LOOKING CARS AND STILLS ARES.AND THATS GRAZY THATS FORD WHENS BACKS WITH THE 62-64T-BIRDS ROSTERS 2 SEATS,$100.00 DOLLORS RIMS FOR EACHS.AND A 390 CUI.WHERES AWESOME LOOKING TOO.
Real cars..
The best years....
those were the days
I owned a 1959 and it was a blast to drive!!!2021
I've thought for some time that the '58--60 T-Birds seemed like a natural successor to the 56-57 Continental Mark II. It was made on a parallel assembly line with Lincolns. This generation had elegant, subdued (for the time) styling, especially in the interior. The gages were jewel-like, in my view. Our family had a 59 T-Bird that my mom drove. It was scandalous to the gossipy women of the little church we went to! It had the 352, 4bbl engine and would run all day at 85 mph on our Phoenix, AZ freeways back then. I just loved it, but was not old enough to drive yet.
I remember my dad blasting across the Arizona desert at 110 MPH in his '60 T-Bird with me and my sister in the back and my mother yelling at him the whole time.

The only older car my wife ever truly liked: 55 through 62 thunderbird.
Remember when cars were truly cool?
Everything about how this series is produced evokes "old car memories".... the intro, and the narration are both great. The most interesting points, and pacing is perfect. Imo.
My very first car in high school was a 1959 Tbird. The car was 10 years old when I got it used and needed some engine work.. learned how to work on cars👍🏻🇺🇸👍🏻
When I was 14 years old in 1973, my father sold our black w/red interior 1960 Thunderbird convertible. I LOVED that car and I begged him to save it for me till I was 16. He said no and that O would have to buy my own car :( I still hols that against him to this day, even though he's passed. I was learning how to work on cars since I was 10 from the motorheads down the street and I did tune ups and oil changes on it. I could swear that it had a 390 though. I am positive it had 6 tail lights as compared too the 4 in 59 which wasn't shown.

I know where your coming from I was fifteen when my mom sold her beautiful 1965 Chevrolet impala ss at the same time you mentioned it was maroon with black vinyl interior. Only 43k at the time. And I did think it was a mistake especially when you take into consideration the direction that cars were going at that time. It would be years before cars would be as good again every time I see a full size 1965 66 Chevy I can get misty. As for Thunderbird s.its funny of all the first five generation s its always the last year of those generation s that I like.57.60.63 66 69 the first generation that I broke with that was the 72to76 generation in that one I liked the 72 the best although I would be willing to say that tbirds were too big by then.
58-60 is Pretty but the 55-57 design is a masterpiece especially the 57.
The second generation Thunderbird was perfectly timed for 1958 & worthy of at least a three year production run.
I remember the first time ever getting in a T bird.. wow! Couldn’t believe anything like this existed.. from the very cool dash to the lounge like rear seats..it was a 66 model.. white with a blue interior 390 4 barrel..
Grew up in this era...very nicely done...
The concurrent Studebaker Hawks were also fine personal luxury coupes and hardtops, so the "Squarebirds" had company in their market segment.
Beautiful Car, My dad had a 60 bird and still remember how elegant it was!

When I was a little toddler I remember very well the lovely T-bird on the highway. I was pestering my late father to buy one as I was not happy to go around with the Bellair 60....
T Bird era a idéia de carro esporte nos eua..
Back in the day my dad bought a new 1958 black T-Bird. We lived on Long Island and that summer we took a trip to Canada in the T-Bird. Everywhere that we stopped, small crowds would gather to look at this awesome car! What an impression that car made on me.

It'd be good if you still had it! I don't think I ever saw one. About the crowd gathering to see it, I'd be in that crowd. When I was traveling, I'd check out the cars & trucks in the museums. There was a museum in Europe that had more vehicles than I'd count, and they had some from the 1800s, many were American. I saw President Roosevelts car in Argentina.
My gramps had a Red with white top 59 T Bird with a 430 Lincoln and Highway gears. My first experience with 140MPH. It rode like a dream too! 👍🇺🇸
Love the 58, 59 and 60 T birds.
I remember a family "get together" back in the late fifties or early '60's, when these were relatively new. A distant relative of mine had I think(seems I remember the 3 taillights on each side) a '60. I was 8 or 9(I'm 67 now) and remember being FASCINATED with that car! It was so pretty, I was totally enthralled with it, playing with the power windows and such. In rural LA around 1960, cars of this sort were rarely if ever seen. The sight of this car only reinforced my lifetime obsession with cars. I would later own 3 Pontiac GTO's in the eighties. A 66, a '68 and a '67 in that order. As a side note, car lover as I am, I don't ever remember Ford offering a 352 engine with 300 hp. Maybe with the 4 bbl. carb it kicked the 352 up to 300. I thought they put 390's in those cars, with the 300 hp option. Maybe somebody can help me. When did the 390 debut? When it did, it had 300 hp.

I remember the advertisement for the 60. It said "THIS is the car you want. Soon!". I agreed, even though I was only 5. Then, when the 61 xame out, I cried out" "they ruined it"! Sales fell by half, so I wasn't the only one who felt that way!

390cid came out in 1961. A 1960 bird had a standard 352cid & an optional 430cid.
Those model years of the T-Bird were my second favorite to the earlier two-seater models; with the '57 model being at the top of my list of T-Birds. The body lines of the '58-'60s made it look like it could do 200 mph.
I had A 1960 tbird in 1969. Car was a smooth cruiser. White hardtop with the red and white interior. I blew the engine in April 1970 just before I went in the Army. I hated to see that big claw pick up the bird to put her in the back of the scrap truck. Perfect body, wow to have that car now?🤔😜
In 3rd grade 1958-59 we lived next to a young doctor who bought a new Thunderbird convertible every year! Heavenly!

I about cried when I say the '57 Fords on the assembly line.....I had two of them....one after another. Really great cars...the last one I drove to 340,000 miles. My uncle, who was a long-distance interstate trucker, used to by a new T-Bird every year. I can't even remember how long he kept doing it but I think it was deep into the '70's. I'm driving '95 'Bird today and love the car. I still would like to get my hands on one of the two-seaters as I built a number of them as model cars......too darn expensive today, tho. Good video.
My mom had a very nice '59 T-Bird, and sold it...basically gave it away...months before I turned 16 (in 1966) and got my driver's license! I ended up with a broken down Falcon. : (
A friend of mine bought a 1958 for 200 dollars in early 80s,...it was white on white, and dingy lookin!...and it was just another "party" car for the guys in the band!, ...mannn,...wish I had one of those now!...a very rare bird today!( we all thought it was a weird lookin car back then!)...and the back seats where very "stiff" and uncomfortable,..and then there was that , thinly upholstered drive shaft hump in the middle, which ALWAYS got in the way of the standard, "back seat" action!....(Mustangs had the same problem!)...little did we know!...lol!
My father bought a slightly used 58 red & white hardtop in the early 60's. It became my mom's daily driver for a couple of years or so after they divorced. She traded it in on a brand new 67 Pontiac Catalina coupe. Still have memories of riding around Nashville TN in the T-bird during the mid-60's. I always sat in the front passenger seat since I was the oldest of 3 kids. Enjoyed the video.
Still my favorite Bird!!! Love this model even more than the 63-65 or the iconic 55-57! This one is the best! 👏❤️👏

Thank you for taking the time to show a beautiful T Bird. The only thing I could add is that the 1960 T Bird had 3 tail lights on each side. and as someone who had the opportunity to drive one. you are absolutely right it was a great car...Ed from Colorado
And one of the great things about the Squarebirds is that the hot rod boneheads aren't bleeping them all up.

MY FAVOURITE TOO FANTASTIC SHAPE LOVE TO HAVE ONE
Viewing videos of classic cars make me wonder where did style and beauty go to? When I say beauty I mean it. Not in a way that we say it to our famine beings (who desserve to be told in a sincere manner) but in those days, I could name every car that passed by. Now, hardly any car is stylish and has beauty. Cars in those days made us turn our heads. Now, when a clasic car goes by, I do turn my head and appreciate the beauty in the style. These days, what makes my head turn is a Rolls-Royce passing by. At least they make my head turn. I can't drive due to my so-called 'disability' but if I could drive, I would buy a classic car any day. Upgrade it to today's standards and even more but keep the style in the beauty and beauty in the style.

Glad you love great styling, but "upgrading" classic cars destroys them. They are supposed to be kept STOCK.
The 1960 T-Bird was the best. The additional ornamentation on the grille plus the triple tail light pods looked great. Until now I didn't realize it had full coil suspension and unibody construction! Surprised they didn't offer a 4-speed automatic option. Great car!
@emjayay
4 жыл бұрын
The rear suspension actually switched to leaf springs in 1959, as did Lincoln. Unit bodies started at Ford with 1958 Thunderbirds and Lincolns. The only four speed automatic around back then was the GM Hydramatic, and it used a fluid coupling instead of a torque converter.

Most definitely most definitely one of the most beautiful cars ever made 😊
You don't see many old Thunderbirds anymore. I went a little different way home the other day, and saw one in a driveway. Seems nobody kept them like the old Corvettes or Mustangs or Camaros. Great cars, though.
Another great-looking car was the 1966 Chrysler Imperial. (You may recall it was featured in the TV show "The Green Hornet" (ABC, 1966-7), starring Van Williams and Bruce Lee.)
That 430 put out some h.p.!!! the 58 was good looking but I will take the 57 anytime for it's iconic good looks. The interior however was gorgeous and an upgrade for the bird!
My first car in high school, was a used 1965 T-bird, ca. 1979. I thought it was the most beautiful car, after seeing my uncle’s and great aunt’s similar style ‘64 and ‘66 birds. I still think that was the most perfect body style of the T-bird.
In my small town there was a young couple and they had 4 kids. They were the cool family in town. The kids went to my school and one day their mother pulled up to pick up her kids in a new '58 T-bird and they were surrounded by kids and adults alike. We were WOWED by that car. Guess what...their dad had purchased TWO T-birds! Matching white hard tops with black interior. I have always thought that was so cool. Only in the '50's could you pull that off. PS. The kids and their mom and dad were the nicest people you'd ever want to meet.

I've always liked that style of T birds since they were new. I told my mom when I was 10 years old that I was gonna buy her one like that someday but I never did.
One of my favorite Thunderbird body styles.
8:06 The Square 'Bird Hardtop is my favourite of all Fords and is true American rolling art, not just a car. I also equally loved the '69 Continental MkIII which was a beautiful bomb. I drove one across Canada and on the prairies with forever straights it was easy to bury the speedo. So I did. No side roads or farm roads, just miles and miles of golden wheat in all directions. Passing a car with a closing speed of 60+ mph was an incredible feeling.
Dad loved his cars. He had the 59 T Bird, 62 Coupe Deville, 63 Lincoln Continental ragtop and the 1964 Mustang.

T Hyslop Your dad sure knew the good stuff! I would be glad to own any one of those today!
The F-Code blown 57's are definitely my favorite T-Bird's ever made. The street version of the supercharged 312 Y-Block was rated at 300 horsepower but we're rumored to make nearly 350 horses in full race trim. NASCAR banned the blown Ford's, fuelie Chevy's, and Tri Power Pontiac's and Oldsmobile's all at the same time in the middle of the 57 season. 1957 was such a great year for cars...the very beginning of the Detroit horsepower wars. The Chrysler 300 completely dominated NASCAR in 1955-56 and the Dodge D-500 was also very successful in 56. It wasn't until 57 that GM and Ford finally built some cars that could compete with the Hemi powered Chrysler 300, DeSoto Adventurer, and Dodge D-500/Super D-500 as well as the Plymouth Fury. Mopar first marketed muscle cars in the mid 1950's...almost a full decade before the 64 Pontiac GTO first came out. Not sure why everyone wants to give Pontiac all the credit
@michaelbenardo5695
Жыл бұрын
Probably because the term "muscle car" came out in 64, along with the GTO, but you are right, Chrysler made the first muscle cars, not GM. And you are right, Ford and GM only made SOME cars that could compete with the faster HEMI cars.
This brought back fond memories. My first car was a '59 Bird Convertible. I got it from the original owner, who, in 1964, took it to the local Ford dealer and had the original 352 replaced with the then-new 427. I won a lot of races with it. My biggest regret is losing it because a drunk driver ran through a red light and destroyed it for me.
Funny thing that very few people know is that the 1958 T-bird had four wheel coil springs but 1959 and 1960 it switched to rear leaf springs even thought the body stayed the same. The rear coil spring suspension only lasted one year. Wonder why? Maybe they were getting ready for the power that would come from the Lincoln engine option.
55 thru 60 were beautiful. But the 61 was gorgeous, sensual. And exemplified our entry into the Space Age.

Through out my life I have owned a couple T-Birds and have always loved the three 'real' T-Bird series, 58-60, 61-63, and 64-66. Those three series have been my favorite cars of all time. I will say that I still prefer the 1961 - 1963 Bullet Birds. Still, the 1958 - 1960 are amazing to drive. The way you sit down low in those cars is really cool. They just feel quicker then the 61-63 or 64 - 66. Of course, that is probably because they are hundreds of pounds lighter. My 62 was 4400 lbs and my 64 was 4600 lbs.

I was fortunate to have the honor of preserving /creating a 1956 Little Bird driver, starting with a complete car from Taft California. It turned out beautiful after 3 years of going through all the mechanicals and body. It was a mule, a working car. As a member of the San Antonio Classic Thunderbird Club we did weekly engagements that ran the gamut from Christmas Parades to city festivals. Whenever a need arose for a flock of the little hummin' birds to show for a function or a cruise in SACTC showed up and the club would carry the dignitaries,VIP's kings and Queens. My bird retained most stock equipments. I only changed the colors/ Super white porthole top/ Super Red body. Stock red and white interior. I tried all the standard T-Bird wheels ,hubcaps, roadster wires and all with Coker classic wide whites. Finally did wheel and tire upgrades to Prime 10 spoke aluminum wheels with blackwall lower profile 14's. Added a 2" rear ( over the axle & differential) anti sway bar kyb shocks and all new front end bushings. Finally!! Handled like a Mini Cooper ! I had the 312 Y block engine bored .o40 and ford-0-matic air cooled transmission rebuilt by NAPA($3400 )the heads worked-hardened valve seats, dual valve springs.( $200 ) Original Holly 4 barrel carb rebuilt by San Antonio Carburetor ($100) and about $400 in chrome & new custom rear bumper. $200 for twin stainless exhaust w/ golden turbo mufflers. I drove it on 4 good long road trips. Two from San Antonio to Cape Girardeau Missouri. ALWAYS a 13 or 14 hours straight through. Those golden Turbos sound so good, and get better the hotter they get. One trip from Mo. to Ocala, Florida. One instate 600+ miles for a class of '67 reunion. Yep, I was "that classmate" Lol!! So the little '56 bird was started on in 1989 (@ 33years old) got the mechanics, drivetrain, bodywork and paint done by 1993 and my Final drive in it was to a show in 2014. I always took home a trophy, and It took home a second place. Divorce separated me from my baby bird after 25 years of enjoying every moment of every drive. Its 6 years rotting in a dank garage in Missouri. R.I.P. LIL THUNDER CHIK'N
Good production, only point is that sunroofs have been around since the thirties
I would love to see you do one on the monte carlo (1970-1977) as well as cadillac Eldorado 1971-78
Not a Ford guy but that is a sharp looking ride. The interior was amazing. Way ahead of its time
That was pretty good. I have owned a '59 Tbird for over 25 years and enjoy it. I think you may have missed that the '59 and '60 models had leaf springs in the rear.

Love these old cars. Heaven on Earth to me. It's great that a car can be called a square bird and be a good thing when usually Square cars are a bad thing. Just look at the 1980s. But these 58 to 60 Birds are a total gem. I would love to own one. But I've always been a Mustang man.
Big change to rear styling for 1960. The Square Bird sprouted another tail light per side, not unlike the '58 and '60 Impala!
Also, the 61-63's !😁🛠️
The Budd Co. supplied all major Class A - BIW - sheet metal assemblies to Ford for the 1955-60 T-birds. In 1960 Budd Co. made a Lincoln and T-bird in all Stainless steel bodies which were on display at Budd's Corporate office showroom.
Y de la última edición de este auto ,están todos guardados !!
Oh, man. I really really need a 1960 Thunderbird.
i do seriously like the 58 to 60....but is in my OWN personal third tier . The 61- 63 seems to be my favorite with the 55 to 57 taking 2nd tier. NO doubt, it's a gorgeous car and time period. Without the 58 to 60....there would have NOT been the slick styling of the 61-63. The 58-60 was one of the COOLEST plastic models I EVER built no doubt and hands-down... There's nothing like T-Birds... I remember my old man used to tell this stupid joke: I hear there's a new job at the Ford plant... Yeah..doing what? Feeding worms to the Thunderbird.... He used to always ask my friends when we were in a car passing by a cemetery: Hey..how many people do ya think are dead in that cemetery? My dumbass friends would always say, "Oh...I dunno...maybe about 400 or so". My Dad would say, "No...ALL of them".... Enough said...

There was one other change in 1960 , which was the tail lights. The 58&59 had 2 tail lights on each side and the 1960 had 3 on each side.
Loved owning my 58, 60 & 61 birds, unfortunately we get to old at times to appreciate them and rather than have them and not use them it was a sad day when we realised they had to go!
