Jay and the builder of this beautiful car ended up going back down La Tuna Canyon Rd. I'm 72 and drive my Porsche 914 / 2.0L late at night through the same canyon. I love driving with the top off, listening to early Stones blaring from the radio. This simple act still brings me immense joy and a reason to get up the next morning.
The workmanship on that 1957 Porsche 356A Outlaw is really something to admire! Nice job!
Fabrication in Michigan is historical! Beautiful, just beautiful!
Now thats what i call a car, gorgeous lines and sensible amounts of horsepower, and looks to die for.
Anyone crying "foul" has never held a wrench or built anything. This transcends 'stock' and becomes 'art'. Awesome job.

I agree a lot more regular guy projects . Jay ought to take his show on the road to the interior of the country to see what’s out there he could be choosy only doing the real good jobs but he is running out of stuff.
Ha! At 13:25 I LOVE the look on Chuck's face when Jay says he's driving it "swiftly" and not "really fast because that's dangerous". I think Chuck might have been thinking they were maybe into that "really fast" zone a little. Beautiful car, Chuck! You did a great job.
He really did an excellent job...beautiful car
Super impressive -- especially for one guy working in his garage! Major props to you.
So clean, so classy, so talented.
Jay Leno needs his own TV show about cars, so much knowledge about muscle to historic to sports to compacts, so much fun this Jay Lenos garage KZread channel is. Pllease put him on tv

I thought he was on CNBC for a while. He should be on regular TV. PBS should have his show on TV.
The sound of that car! It’s like a symphony! Great work Chuck!
I love lambos and mclarens and all that, but this is just something else.

***** You need God and Some taste. The car is beautiful. I think you one of a few that thinks its ugly in any way.
I wonder if people will still watch these videos in 100 years? In 1000? years? We have a way of documenting things that has only become possible in the past few years; it's amazing.
Amazing piece of work...i'd take this over any modern car any day of the week
The sound that car makes is like nothing else. "Who needs a radio?" is quite right. All in all, everything from the sound to the colour to the quality of the build, it all works together perfectly. You simply couldn't do it better.

Now that is what I call a Porsche. True to the soul, yet always improved.
I was watching this video while walking on a treadmill at a 2.8 pace. When Jay stepped on the gas, my pulse went from 89 bpm to 92. What a sound. I can imagine what driving this beauty must be
God bless this man for restoring this gem! Beautiful!
what a beautiful car! such timeless elegant lines looks even modern today.
I've been watching about half a dozen of these videos with Jay Leno. Several from Pebble Beach. And after listening to him, discussing all these different cars with their owners. That brought me to the conclusion. That he has more knowledge about cars in his thumb than I will ever have. And I have been passionate about cars since the early 1970s. When you listen to him. You get a true education on such a wide variety of cars. He is a virtual encyclopedia.
that is hands down the greatest thing I've ever seen...
The discussion about the redline made me chuckle He's all tryin to tell Jay it's lower than it is so he don't rev it out. Then Jay is like Well we will just find out and he's all oh no. lol

Jay believes they should be driven, not beat, but driven like they were meant to be, that guys not thinking, if Jay breaks it he'll buy it, he's thinking, I have this car sold, please don't do anything to screw that up.
That is a true work of art!
Yet one more reason why I love this show. My uncle had one of these and loved it so much. I "almost" drove it once, on a trip up the Sacramento river, but my prompt evacuation of a liter of wine gave uncle second thoughts about sharing the piloting of his little baby with me, and so I spent the rest of the drive (all the way up to Grass Valley, too) as a passenger with a great view of California. Thank you, Uncle Steve.
The amount of anxiety in Chucks eyes as Jay redlined it was absolutely hilarious and priceless. XD
Wow, what a car ! It's perfect, it's a pure Outlaw ! The proper ride height, the Fuchs, the custom 912 engine, the sound, everything is perfect ! Well done !

Had "Chuck" not taken on this project, the original carcass would have been gone forever.: rebar in a building somewhere. As it is, he has created something better than the factory ever did, the hard way, one piece at a time. An "expense be damned" project is sometimes the very best of projects. Now lets see someone drive that little bastard everyday. Enjoy. Persistence + patience = Pride.

Thank you for this video Jay and Chuck. Absolutely loved it, I had an awful weekend and seeing this beautiful machine and hearing that sound and hearing what Chuck had and what he turned it into have really cheered me and inspired me. Great job. Thank you.
I watched this vid when it came out in 2014 and just rewatched it now in 2023, have to say this car is timeless.
Man, the price MUST have been right for Chuck to let this baby go. For me, this car is equal to the amount of fun Jay is having while driving it as evidenced by the smile on his face at 13:15... PRICELESS!
l found one of those engines in a junk yard in main for $100 bucks, its going in a 1959 vw single cab pickup,

I would sell BOTH kidneys for an outlaw. My good Lord... Such a piece of deliriously fun art 🎨
I love the pedigree and the design that came from the factory, and admire it far beyond that for what Chuck started with, and wound up with. Bravo.
That guy looked like he was gonna shit his pants sitting in the passenger seat while Jay looked like he was having the time of his life lol
Just a glorious job. He used Porsche parts as well so if any purist has anything against it... please stfu. It's a Porsche made with heart and soul.

It's alright i guess if 2 purists want to stand off to the side at a show or whatever and discuss and even disparage a reborn car or motorcycle as per incorrect aspects but in the context of what you might do differently. Restoration, like it or not is a prequel to what happens in any build. The concept gets murky when applied to "rat rods" but most everything else of the car genre gets rotisserieed. There are many ways or reasons it can be an incorrect build in the eyes of purists. Lack of skill or funds to do it per factory procedures and result. That kind of build is just one of those unfortunate realities of the car world. They get done to varying standards. Many times it's to make something useable again that is half rotted away. I understand there is correct and how important that is on really rare and desirable stuff and that there are people really involved in collecting or their career is tied that world. Just like many other aspects of life some people go overboard in their reaction to an individual build or sub genre such as "Rat Rods" or "Outlaw" culture in the car world. A lot of this stuff is produced from cars too far gone to be a feasable concours restoration. What that means in this day and age is up for debate. Not so much when the structure of the car is largely rotted away but situations exist and may be on the rise where the value of the finished car is less than the restoration cost. Chrome plating's escalating cost is one growing factor. It's just a fact of life that attrition chips away at the sum total of any model sold when new and as a collector so many things like accidents, salted roads, motor racing attrition all contribute to the shrinking pool of those left.

All I can say is beautiful!!
OMFG that guy deserves a knighthood Lol. That is probably the most beautiful rendition of a Porsche I have ever seen x
That engine note was like a symphony going down the road! Lucky Jay. That dude Chuck really did a fantastic job bringing it back from it's rusty grave.
Stunning, hard to believe what passion is capable of.
Man at 11:11 i have never seen such an expression of pure joy.
Nice save on a rusted out she'll. Great workmanship and a really nice throaty sound. Congrats on a great car.
Very impressive job.
I so love the sound of that engine. It is music to my ears.
The effortless beauty of this car is blinding, folk in the 1950s must have thought the martians had landed when they saw this thing blitzing down the road.
Chuck worked on my MG in 1998 doing some welding and a complete paint job. He is just a great guy and has infinite patience to complete any job to perfection. He is a Porsche guy at heart but takes on any project and while working on mine he had an early 20th century Maxwell that he was doing restoration work on. He was looking for an artist to hand pinstripe wooden spoke wheels with a particular pattern. He is just an amazing man and it was my fortune and pleasure to work with him over the course of 3 weeks. I believe he told me he was an accountant before deciding to go full time with his passion.
Jay Leno, Grand Patron of the automotive arts.
Wow that's a beautiful job, especially as far gone as the car was. Well done.
Beautiful fabrication! So few guys build their own stuff nowadays so it's really refreshing to see one that truly is "his" car, even if it isn't to the level seen here. Again, very nice work!
I like how it’s so fast like your looking you look away and then zoom there it goes.
This car is something else. Perfection. Nice work to the owner. Nobody else has anything close. I'm so glad that you put original wheels on it. Any guy could put giant dummy wheels on a car.
A genuine work of art.
Normally not a big fan of Porsches, but this thing is beautiful. What a great job.
beautiful car, had the amazing opportunity to see a 356A coupe behind a glass window while i was in tokyo, i thought i would never see one. amazing.
That 5 spoke chrome and black. Love original or original inspired Porsche wheels!
Great job salvaging that basket case. I love the detail. I hope Jay makes more of these episodes in his "retirement."
Jay Leno is my hero!
Sweet ride and great job building it! Keeping history alive. Love this show! Thanks Jay!
Nice to see a classic car from the year I was born.
Excellent job! what an amazingly well put together Porsche. absolutely stunning.
Oh wow such a timeless design, it would look amazing even rolling out today.
Thanks Jay. I get so much pleasure from watching your programs. By the way I have watched a few different programs with various garages and yours is the only one that looks like it has a soul and is loved ... all the rest look like car storage whereas yours is a home for your cars :-). I hope you will keep making these programs for many years to come!
Brings back quit a few memories, Bought an original low miles '56 speedster in 1970 for $400 had about 30k on the clock, super straight, no rust, original faded red paint two- tone red (it turned coral pinkish red on the sunny side of the car and factory red still on the shady side), i rubbed out the paint and it looked pretty good being 1/2 pink and 1/2 red. top was completely shredded from sitting outside for a few years with a ripped up tarp over the ragtop, but the seats, interior and dash and carpet were in nice shape because it had a full cockpit tonneau cover so even with the yop shredded it was covered , Only issue being no engine, I stuffed a fairly fresh stock 36 hp out of a 59 Karmann Ghia in it, added a free flow quad exhaust and dual deloretto carb set-up and called it good, Though i changed the carbs back to a single VW carb for better reliability , i never did replace the top so was my daily fair weather driver for a few years which in So Cal is sunny 300 days a year. Like Jay said all the fun in a car like this is had between 40 and 100 mph actually between 40 & 80 mph with the 36hp>> i think 90 was about top speed. Got an amazing 40-50 mpg no matter how i drove it. Like so many vehicles i've had in the past 60 years that Speedster was one of those cars i wish i had kept, I traded it for a nice old & well kept Merc or Ford woody wagon with a 283 / 4 speed & a Triumph Bonnie flat track Moto..
Jay Leno...MAN OF THE COMMON PEOPLE! It does not matter where it was built or the pedigree as Jay loves them all as we do...the common man who loves automobiles.
THAT! is a gorgeous machine! Absolutely stunning....rolling artwork.
Beautiful job and car, and it sounded AMAZING!
Special, very special. Thank you men.
Who in the world would frown upon this car, it's very nicely built.
I love it and I WANT it!! Perfect version of an already fantastic styled car!
A heartbeat car.......I'd have it in a heartbeat. Stunning.
Chuck has easily earned my respect. What a cool project.
This and a 330 GTS. The most beautiful cars of all time. Once again Jay, to live one day ( preferably a Saturday wrenching in the garage ) in your shoes. Greetings from Georgetown, MA.

Wow what a beautiful job !
Never saw one of these on the streets. First time i ever saw one, was in the early 90s tv show Beverly Hills 90210. Dylan's car. One of the most beautiful Porsche, ever. Thank you, Mr. Leno & team, for taking the time to show all these beautiful cars.
That is just purely pretty and very much timeless in appearance, kudos to the craftsman.
that sound gives me goose pimples...could only imagine in real life. Cheers to that cam shaft maker, he done good.
I couldn't stop laughing about how nervous this guy looked while Jay was driving. The discussion about the redline summed it up: Jay: what's the redline? 6, 65? Chuck: more like low 50's Jay: 58, something like that... (goes onto other subjects) Chuck: (interrupting)..maybe 54 Jay: we'll find out in a few minutes

I could watch this over and over... a really nice job...
I started to make a joke about this being a really nice Volkswagen but I just can't do it. I'm not a Porsche guy but I've always loved these particular Porsche's, and this is one of the best looking I've seen. Absolutely beautiful car.
great car and show, way better then your old late night one.
Wow, just fucking....wow!
I can’t believe this episode slipped past me. I (and it looks like Jay too) want this car.
The idling sound is perfect...
This thing is bloody gorgeous and sounds superb, 10/10 jay, should get more old porsches up on here
Most beautiful car ever
I've watched this numerous times. enjoyed it every time. beautiful car, sounds great, looks fun to drive.
it looks like a pearl its so beautiful the curves and the color combined is just amazing
Beautiful car... Great craftsmanship!
Very Nice 356. Perfect!
Beautiful. One of the best I've seen on Leno's Garage.
Love Jays posts, been waiting for a 356 to turn up. I came home from hospital in one when I was born. My dad has good taste. Loved this. Thank you Jay.
Officer: You were speeding Jay: No. I was "swifting"
Gotta love a guy like that...DIY
Beautiful. Makes me love my 914 even more! Thanks you guys....
Tell Chuck he has a great car, just love his work. Thanks for sharing!
Jay: So what's the redline? Chuck: Low 5000's. Jay: So 5800? Classic...

I absolutely love the sound of that engine. The replica 356 that is another video is a beautiful car, but it can't top this one.
Jay had a lot of fun with this one, you could tell
Gorgeous car!!!
