White Plains was a British group that was around for a time in the early 1970s. And I've often wondered why they named themselves after White Plains, NY?

The J-2 setup was available only after January 2, 1957, not at the start of the model year. The J-2's center carburetor had regular mechanical linkage which the engine ran on until the accelerator was pushed to the 2/3 point of its travel (as shown in the advertisement). The other 2 carburetors had a vacuum linkage which worked fine if the driver used them frequently, and herein was the problem---many average owners of J-2 models rarely pushed the gas pedal all the way down, especially since the 371 had plenty of power in normal driving. If unused for long periods of time the extra carbs would become clogged/gummed up & cause the engine to run rough. Eventually, many owners had the extra carbs disconnected to prevent the engine from running rough. This was one of the reasons the J-2 was only offered in MY '57 & '58.

You just have to take 'er out on the freeway and give 'er an "Italian tune-up" (AKA: Cut lose and rev 'er up) until you don't see anymore carbon in your rear-view mirror! Big fun but keep your eye out for the PD!

@ NickTwisp80-- If the other two carburetors were clogged or gummed up due to inactivity, I would think that pouring something like Marvel Mystery Oil directly into the carburetors while the engine was running at a fast idle, might help to unclog them. I have seen some people do this on a car with one carburetor and it did seem to work well, but it did create a lot of smoke!!

My '57 Olds 98 Starfire with 4 bbl. carb. would put the speedometer needle past 120 and 2/3's of way across the fuel gauge... previous owner may have installed a performance camshaft... it had dual glasspacks exhaust, Atlas Bucron rear tires, no wheel covers... it would beat the smaller Olds 88 with J2 engine if the Hydramatic tranny was held in gears and shifted manually...

I'm an old timer! My first Oldsmobile was a 1954 Olds 88 - 2-dr sedan. That was in the mid 50's. There were only two model cars that were considered quick; Oldsmobile and the Twin-H Power Hudson. However, my first introduction to Oldsmobile was my older brothers 1951 2-door business coupe (with a small rear window), and more importantly the 1956 bored and stroked engine under the hood. Back in the day the '57 Chevrolet was the car to beat. When my brother ask the state patrol why he pulled him over instead of the Chev, his reply was 'you won didn't you'.

'54 Olds came with a 2 speed PowerGlide because the Hydramatic factory burned... my older brother had one briefly... Cadillac got any Hydramatics available...

A close friend of mine, who passed last years, bought one of these '57 Super 88 hardtop coupe for his first car back in the mid-to-late 60's.

I had a 1962 Olds 98 in the late 1960's. It was a great freeway flyer with the rochester 4 jet carb and three speed auto. It was always a challenge to not creep up to illegall speds on the freeway. No cruise control.

This is always been my favorite models of the mid-fifties olds. I really like the headlights with the hooded or setback look which which was a big thing in 57 for a lot of automobiles. This car is beautiful! It looked really great in motion in the vintage video! I am a little partial to the Pontiacs, it would be a tough decision between the Olds and Pontiac. I think I would probably pick the Mercury because I really like the look of the various models for that year. 😎

Give me the '57 Buick, all day long. One of my absolute favorites of all time. I liked the Olds nearly as much, especially the Starfire. I just watched a sales training video on these, and that dashboard abyss was touted as improving the sound of the radio speaker (and ventilation, I think). I'm with you on the pinstripes, Jay. Enjoyed your work here, as usual!

1957 olds love those cars

This Oldsmobile is very sharp, especially the interior, I love the black & red!!! I could do without the spiderweb pinstripes but other than that the car is stunning!!! It does need a set of original wheel covers, then it will be perfect!!! Thanks Jay for sharing another exciting video!!! 👍👍🙂

I agree 100% with everything that you said =) i’m not into the pinstriping thing sometimes it’s OK but not on this car.

These were high quality cars. Good looking too. The transmission selector modes in Oldsmobiles was: P (park) N (neutral) D (drive) S (super) L (low) R (reverse)

Olds made a great car. My granddad had a 55 88 he bought new and kept until 72. As kids we called it the green jet, it was 2 tone green and white and had a jet plane hood emblem. It wasn't garaged yet it never had any rust, in NJ driven in winter with road salt used liberally. The paint was dull, faded, the chrome pitted but no rust. Whenever I see one of these it sure brings back memories of childhood in the early 60s. Thanks.

You are quite correct about Lee Petty being Richard Petty's father. In fact, it's no coincidence that at the first ever Daytona 500 in 1959, Petty ended up in the winner's circle at the wheel of an Olds bearing the famous #42 before he moved on to Plymouth. As for the scenarios you gave, if I were in the market for a GM car of this vintage that wasn't a Cadillac, it'd probably come between the Olds and Buick, though I would also have to consider the DeSoto, seeing how rare they are nowadays, plus I really dig Mopars of the 'Forward Look' era.

Jay, the S on the shift quadrant on Oldsmobiles stands for "Super." Super acceleration from the improved hydramatic trans. These cars have become historical artifacts, museum pieces but they were new cars when I was a kid and finding out all there is to know about the latest gimmicks and options. But take it from this OG who grew up on cars, it's Super. OG's and young bloods - take it from me Jay, you are the best of the young bloods at featuring the classics and I enjoy your show.

It’s only super for the turbo Hydra Matic I believe I could be mistaken. It’s second for everything else. but they made a ton of different turbo hydra Matic/Hydra Magic’s jet away roto th400 etc But that’s awesome I’ve been preaching super to the choir for a long time I just always thought that it was on the turbo Hydro Matic not the original Hydro Matic but I think this one has a Jetaway because I saw it in the advertisement.

@@What.its.like. Naw, super started in 1952 when olds came out with the new improved dual-range hydromatic. It continued into about 1964 when the 3 speed turbo hydramatic was introduced - then it was used for 2nd gear, but olds still kept the super name. Hydramatic was Oldsmobile's baby that they gave to Cadillac and Pontiac, so when super was up for grabs, they took it - long before the 3 speed automatic.

A fairly decent looking resto-mod. The pinstripes are a bit overdone. Typical black and red interior that was big in the 90s. Needs period correct wheel covers.

One of the coolest features on the 57 olds is the gas fill location. It's hidden underneath the small panel with Super 88 emblem that is between the driver side tail light and bumper. My dad had a 57' 88 2dr hardtop w/J2 installed(not original) and a 57' super 88 convertible w/J2 option. I love the style of the 57 Oldsmobile and with that said, my choices are.... 56 Oldsmobile DeSoto 57 Buick Awesome videos!

I have a highly detailed model of a 1957 Super 88 with all opening parts. One thing that didn't get shown was the secret location of the gas tank. It was situated below the left rear taillight behind the shiney chrome.

Totally agree my favorite car from 57 is the Studebaker golden hawk. Super underrated faster than a Corvette but wasn’t the fastest car in 57 do you know what was? It wasn’t the Corvette and it wasn’t Chrysler 300

Great review as always, Jay. 👍🏼 If you had the factory air option for 1957 it was the first year for push buttons (took the place of the ventilation button panel) and the a/c vents were part of that wide chrome louver like looking bezel at the top of the dash. I know the J-2's could be quite troublesome as they aged. This seemed a bit of a resto-mod especially the interior. My Mom's older brother had a 4 door sedan he said was a Golden Rocket 88 - it was gold exterior and gold brocade interior and I always wondered why there was no badge💫.PS the dual exhaust option, available on all models, sent the exhaust through two vertical louvered grills built in to opposite ends of the rear bumper. Parts for 1956 are far more plentiful than for 1the 957 due to much larger production numbers. Many 1956 were custom made into ambulances as well. I've seen photos. Also as police cars o the old TV show Highway patrol with Broderick Crawford (1954-1959?) kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z4aEqLeSdLKYg8Y.html The producers weren't locked into a n auto contract so you get to see all makes and models of classic cars when they were new. It's an Oldsmobile. It's a premium level automobile offering luxury, comfort, style, and quality engineering in GM. The price as well is indicative of the car.

Just want to let you know THAT the rear view mirror with the tilt bar at the bottom of it was VERY common in the 50's, that is when they first started making that feature on the rear view mirrors to take away the glare of the cars headlights behind you !🤗 Ps- That picture of the Mercury you showed is a "1958" NOT a 1957 !!

I like the 1957 Olds but I would take the DeSoto. I love fins, the bigger the better. I remember the ads from when I was a kid back in 1957; A rocket for every pocket!

There was a lot of cool advertisements for this car but a lot of them I absolutely hate when people put their own insignia on it the only person that owns this footage is the manufacturer. People might go to the library and take a video of this and then put it on KZread and then slap their name on it just like in this one this one had somebody’s name slapped on it and doesn’t own the rights to the video. I like using the commercials to show what the car is look like in motion because a lot of times especially not right now I can’t drive any of the cars because it’s winter here I can’t wait until spring I have no idea what the future lies this year I don’t have any access to car is like I did last year which is kind of a bummer but. It’s going to be interesting that’s for sure =)

$73 to upgrade your 1957 Olds to the J2 package? That's ultra cheap! The Dollartimes Inflation Calculator states that translates to $850 in today's USD. I want people to realize things have changed drastically. Today you pay several thousand(s) extra for a high performance engine or model! My father bought a brand new '57 Super 88 J2 convertible, white with red interior. He took a train to Detroit from NY to buy it. He said the acceleration was reminiscent of taking off in a Jet Aircraft; same feeling while pinning people back in their seats & it didn't let up! He thought 312 hp was severely underrated. Just to give another indication, he test drove a 1968 Shelby GT500 428 ci automatic & said that car was the closest he'd experienced to accelerating like that '57 Olds!

The second car I ever worked on back in high school auto shop in 1972, only that one didnt have the J2 option. The first was a 1955 Chevy with the old stovebolt 6

Lee's car number was 42, so Richard picked 43 as it was one below his father's.

The J2 option was actually quite popular and were seen quite often. Trouble was they were touchy and never worked as they were intended to especially after a few years. It was very common to unhook the front and rear carbs and just run them in the center 2BBL. They also had troublesome automatic transmissions. Nice cars but not the best year for Oldsmobile.

1957 were all nice , trucks too

You experienced the difference between the olds 88 and 98 a difference in wheelbase. And it’s shorter wheelbase showed up in the back seat. Plus, there is a shorter roof line so the rear seat is also moved forward.

Pinnacle of 50s Oldsmobile. I think the same for Buick & Cadillac

Really like the black and red, inside and out. Don't like the custom pin striping though. That's just me. Beautiful car! The three scenarios: 1. 57 Olds 2. 57 Buick 3. 57 Mercury. I say, I say. 😂😂😂

In 1965, GM launched all new B-body full sized cars. Chev and Pontiac wagons were well received, but Buick and Olds full sized wagons were dropped, replaced by stretched A-body Sport Wagon and Vista Cruiser. Five years later, ONE year left for the platform, Buick revived the Estate Wagon, one of my favorite wagons ever. How did they justify tooling to do that for ONE year? Would love to see you do some older wagons, and this one would be top of my list!

Buick brought back the wagon in 2018 for two full seasons. The Regal TourX was an Opel built car. Opel was sold so nomore wagons. I love mine.

@@stevespatola763 Yes... a very nice sporty wagon that European customers still like. If GM had equipped them with the 3.6L V6, I would be looking for a used one while they are still around.

I prefer the '56 Olds over the '57, the lines seem cleaner to me. I agree with you about the pinstriping, it detracts from the appearance of the car. in the late 1960's my older brother had a '55 Olds sedan, which is of a similar style to the '57. I remember it being a big, comfortable car with plenty of interior room. We felt that we were riding in a Cadillac.

There’s a 57 Chevy four-door hardtop coming up probably next week everybody always told me that there’s way more space in those cars than there is in the hardtop two-door hardtop but there really isn’t that much space in that car there is more space than a hard top but not that much if you have kids and one of Classic Car Chrysler product any of them choose any of them from the 50s they have way more space than Ford or Chevy.

I like those 3 part glass back windows. Nice car. I'm not crazy about the extra pin stripping either. Your or, or, or car selection - can I have all three - or 6, I want them all.

Choices for me are tough!

The 1957 Oldsmobile was the best looking of them all. The massive chrome front bumper was so slick looking compared to the 1957 Chevrolet, Pontiac and Buick. Lee Petty drove one of the J2 Oldsmobiles at NASCAR in this year and in 1958. - Yes, Lee Petty was Richard Petty's Dad. Someone customized that Olds and removed all the letters from the grille except for "Olds". Should say "Oldsmobile" all the way across. One thing I think is odd with GM styling is the sides of the cars. Oldsmobile was advertised as "The Rocket Car" from 1949 and onwards, yet the 1957 and 1958 Pontiac has a giant rocket chrome side body trim up the side. What was up with that? Thank goodness the guy didn't dump a Chevy 350 under that hood. I'll forgive the 4 bbl Holley and alternator in there because of that.

I actually like the De Soto and Mercury the best, i know they are in the same group. Regarding some earlier talk, rear window and backlight are both acceptable. What is NOT acceptable is rear windshield. Windshield by definition is blocking the wind, so unless you are driving very fast backwards that is not correct usage of the word. Just my two cents worth. I happen to love the 1957 Oldsmobile's styling. The dash just seems to be like jewelry with all the chrome. Love the deep dip with the chrome on the door. The split rear windows with the ribs in the roof and trunk are really cool. Too bad this one has been tinkered with, removing some of the chrome bits and changing the interior, even though the red and black looks really nice. I choose '57 for all three categories. That being said, I would have to be a 3 car person with your selection adding the Mercury and the '57 Buick.

1957 olds all the way my dad had one.. beautiful car but hood flew up .. yikes! due to lack of second safety latch

My dad had a 56 Holiday. 88 two door hard top. It was gold and maroon two tone. One summer night my dad was out late and encountered a deer in the middle of the road he swerved to avoid the deer and flipped that 88 . It rolled over five times and nearly killed my dad.

I always liked the '56 better than the '57. I never could understand why they went to the retro three piece rear window in '57 on both the Olds and the Buick since they decreased the rearward vision with blind spots.

The ‘57 was a much prettier and sportier car! My Dad had one… 4 dr hardtop with the J-2. Great car!

MY SECOND CAR I OWNED WAS A 1958 OLDSMOBILE SUPER 88 I HOPED IT UP WITH A NEW 4 BARREL CARB. IT WAS ONE OF MY MOST COMFORTABLE CARS I EVER OWNED. LIFE WAS GOOD BACK THEN YOU COULD BUY GAS FOR 42 CENTS A GALLON AND A CASE OF 24 BOTTLES OF BEER FOR UNDER $4.00. LIFE WAS GOOD BACK THEN.

My uncle also had one of these. I never cared for this model. I'd take a 56 over one of these any day I owned a 54 and a 56, loved them both both 2dr hardtops. Choice of the day? 57 Pontiac with the Buick a very very close second.Second question? 57 DeSoto. Hate all the pinstripe garbage on this one.

Yes. Lee Petty was Richard's father.

Attention to detail on the hood latch area. Rust is easily cleaned and painted.

I could do without the excessive pinstriping, too. I also don't care for the OLDS in the grille - should be the full Oldsmobile name as in the example 57 photo you show near the end of the video. The lines of the car are very interesting and beautiful. I really like the rear end styling! The dash is just crazy cool!! On the car you review, it seems that the ornamentation on the front of the hood is missing.

I have no idea what the dip is for it’s just you could literally reach your hand down inside there and it just didn’t go anywhere it seemed I should’ve crawled underneath the dashboard to see if I could see the windshield from looking up

@@What.its.like. I transplanted a 1963 394 olds engine into my 1957. I had to have the crank drilled for a pilot bearing. I put it all back together with two WCFB four barrel carbs. It seemed like it took forever to get it back together! On my first test drive the roads were slick with snow. I pulled up to a stop sign on a lonely road. I stomped the pedal, and the thing come to life like a tiger, but, by the time I hit third gear, a heater part come apart under the dash on the passengers side, and iced the windows from the inside instantly! Im flying 60-70 mph in the dark, and can't see anything! The wipers on these are a nightmare! Vacuum activated, cable controlled, but they wouldn't have helped anyway!

@@What.its.like. I put on a set of 1961 Pontiac 8 Lug wheels spindle mount. They need bearing spacer about .300 fit correctly. The Pontiac brakes are much wider, but the diameter was close enough. The olds spindle is longer. I got it together, but it could have been safer.

That style of custom pinstriping is very popular on 1950's cars especially hot rods, but like you, I was never a fan. I can appreciate the time & work involved, but I prefer simple restrained pinstriping if at all.

Idda know... It's got all the black paint, Elvira and pin stripping thing on but if you're going to have the pin stripes on there take the cobwebs off...

My Dad had a '57 Super 88. White with a turquoise stripe. Interior turquoise. I don't know, but I think this has had an interior "restoration." Pinstripes: no. Aftermarket "wheel covers": no. Is that a tachometer? Definitely no.

Yeah I’m not a fan of some of the custom pieces that they anointed this car with like the pinstripes that’s like____ uh after watching what happened to Jeremy Clarkson I better keep my opinions to myself. It yeah it’s not attractive

Hi Jay, The '54-'56 Olds 2 Dr. sedan and HT were the best-looking GM cars of the decade IMO. I especially liked the oval grille and speedometer on the '56 and '57. The rear brake lights on the '57 looked overdone to me. 1) '56 Olds 2) '57 DeSoto 3) '57 Olds. I never cared for the '57-'59 Mercurys. Always enjoy your videos!

With the 2.4 litre engine and a turbo charged engine, the 3.8 litre engine wouldn't be needed. The long sloping hood might also make it a difficult fit. The speedo reads up to 180 mph. I'm not going to try it, but there is plenty of torque and driveability.

That J2 three two barrel carburetor option was expensive and a high maintenance item to keep in proper tune. It was discontinued after the 1958 model year. I don't think that Oldsmobile ever offered anything other than a single carburetor afterwards. Pontiac did in the 1960s until GM management issued a policy in 1966 that multiple carburetors would only be permitted on the Chevrolet Corvette.

Yeah close to $1k equivalent and from what I’ve read the single two barrel is what is running the car the other two only activate when on the throttle. But if you really think about it this is one of those underrated cars from 1957 to 57 Chevy is the one that everybody looks too but it’s really not that great.. so I’ve been told if I could have any car from 1957 I would pick the Studebaker golden hawk teal with white or black and white =) that’s a car that I really want to own one day

No, Oldsmobile offered 3 two barrels as a high perf package on the 442 in 1966, I can't remember the name of the package, W-30 maybe? My buddy Mickey, a tiny and very pretty platinum blond ran hers at the track in '66 and she could powershift the 4 speed, I was running my new GTO. 1966 was a fun year for fast cars..

The J-2 option was a great feature, but it had to be converted from a vacuum advance to a direct linkage. This allowed you to operate all three carburetors off the line. Of course it used more gas, but you had the full range of power from 0 to 120 mph. I used the same set up on my 327. I won a lot of races with it.

I am thinking Olds may have had a twin 4 barrel in the 60s.

1957 and 1958, all Oldsmobiles were built with the GM B body, shared only with Buick Special and Century models. 1957 Pontiacs were built with the A body, shared with Chevrolet.

@@What.its.like. you are welcome. It can be confusing, but always compare the roof panels and greenhouses. That is usually the give away.

I would rather have a: 1. 1956 Olds, the reason being my paternal grandmother owned one. But it was totalled when I was four years old. So I have always had a fascination for that particular Oldsmobile. 2. 1957 Buick. And it looked so much better than the '58. 3. 1957 Oldsmobile. Now, I couldn't help but notice the '61 Thunderbird right next to this old girl.

I like the 57 over the 56. Better looking car, smoother look and better interior. Three deuces on the intake get weird quickly and require lots of maintenance. Unless you're good at carbs, this could get to be a pain as seen with the single carb on that intake. I'm sorry to say the 57 DeSoto gets my nod. They were rust buckets, but just a cool design that screams 50's and the forward look thanks for Virgil Exner!

Virgil Exner works for Chrysler this would’ve been Harley earl era at GM i’m not sure if Harley Earl was responsible for this design though he had some people working under him

Never had a problem with my carbs on my 57 Olds.

gotta remember HP was measured at the crank with no accessory attached (GROSS HP) up until 1972 when they measure NET HP,that is still not power at the wheel so you take ate at least 25% or more to get what you really had at the wheel 300X 75%=225 HP or less

My first car was a '56 Olds Super 88 purchased in 1962 for $600. It was not a good car, always something breaking. It was green like the one shown above the '57.

Never had another olds .so I guess caddy's won but they were similar the Lincoln got 17mpg .che cadys. were bad . I have a voyager 4cyl van 40mpg hwy.2002tday and a 66tbird çvt. Back in the day a caddy add 1000$every 2yrs get 2-3yry old car no maintenance 😜
