On “My Car Story” we're in Scottsdale AZ at The Arizona Concours d’Elegance on 1-21-23.
We’re looking at a 1957 Jaguar XK140 DHC “Drophead Coupe” SE “Special Equipment” in Burgundy Paint. The car comes with a straight 6 engine with an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Steven Kreisman. Steven’s had this car since 2013. Steven shares he just loves the body style and shape of the car. There were only three cars shipped to the USA with left hand drive and automatic transmissions.

One of the most beautifully designed cars of all time. Jaguar must've thought so too. They continued this basic design from 1948-1960, that's an eternity in the automotive world. Thanks Lou.

As you may recall, like yourself, I am a Jag owner and enthusiast. I can think of no other car company that consistently produced such beautiful machines whether they were sporting coupes and convertibles or 4 door sedans (saloons) with great performance while not being stratospheric in price or maintenance or over the top.

¡Saludos cordiales, Lou!

Lou, my understanding was the 120, 140 and 150 were based on the advertised top speed, not the horsepower. This is what I was told a number of years ago by an owner of a 1957 XK140 FHC. I understand the rarity of the automatic transmission, but there’s a reason Jaguar only imported 3…back in the day, no one but a Hollywood starlet would want it.

I thought, all of those had dual exhausts. He probably meant, having them separate from another was an option. Otherwise, they were always doubled together to one side. That tool in the trunk is what Brits refer to as a "Budgie". There aren't any lifters, in that engine. The camshafts drive thimble tappets, just above the valve stems

One thing...the models--120,140,150 did not refer to horsepower, but rather the top speed supposedly achieved...the last iteration of this older body style was a 150 model--but never could reach 150mph, without being modified. These older model Jags were, IMO, better looking than even the striking XKE models. The Brits built many beautiful cars, but forgot to build in reliability! At any rate, this gorgeous vehicle would be worth several hundred thousands of dollars now--at least!..Not sure if the rarity of that auto transmission would increase, or decrease, the value.

It was too bad, that the owner did not comment more on that excellent engine...It was a dual, overhead cam six, derived from the racing engines. Few cars offered a DOHC engine in the late 1940s, when Jaguar offered one!...and that exhaust note, is the sweetest sound you will ever hear from a six!...Even my old Austin-Healey--also a six--did not quite match the splendor of that Jaguar engine sound!
@seanhoward8025

Yes, Jaguar didn’t produce V12s until the 70’s.
120,140,150 wasn't assigned to horsepower,it was top speed.

Hmm, I always thought the number was based on how fast it coud go. XK120 went 120 mph, XK150 went 150 mph. That is what Jay Leno has always said. I guess this particular model is different?
@sparky6086
Жыл бұрын
That's what I read. It referred to the top speed in miles per hour. I think, that Lou was incorrect in saying, that it referred to the horsepower. Apparently, the owner thought, that it would be rude to correct him. Also, the owner originally said, that SE stood for "Special Equipment" but when Lou said that "SE stood for "Special Edition", right?", the owner acknowledged, "yes". Very British of this American owner. Most Americans wouldn't have considered it rude to correct Lou.
