This all original 1956 Les Paul Custom has tone and mojo in spades as show cased by the masterful Joey Landreth. With it's Alnico 5 Staple pickup in the neck and P-90 in the bridge this fretless wonder can cover jazz, blues, rock and all styles in between.
Joey plugged straight into a 1962 Fender Deluxe. We mic'd the amp with a Cascade Fat Head BE and the room with a Zoom H6N. Video by Jon Roncolato | Audio & Editing by Zach Broyles

First electric guitar I bought with my own money was a '54 or '55 LP Black Beauty just like this. This '56 is the year before they went to the Seth Lover designed PAF humbuckers and mine had the same pickups: the P-90 at the bridge and Alnico 5 "staple" at the neck. Most powerful and thick sounding guitar I ever owned, amazing. Paid $125 in 1964, sold it in 1967 or '68 for $400, and bought an ES 345 early in '68 for $475. So I did ok with that! I kind of wish I still had the LP but I really wanted the 345 so I'm not complaining. Both superior guitars. The LP was sold to me as a 1954 but it could have been '55. At any rate, it was a great one and that was when a guitar was a guitar and one like that was not a luxury item. Those are worth about $35,000 today if the guitar and case are both in top condition.

I have one of those from the same year. The AlNiCo "staple" neck pickup is something to behold.

Lollar is making an Alnico 5 "staple" pickup that has been reviewed quite favorably compared to old ones. The pickup is a wonder in one of these LP Customs from '54 through '56.

How are those pickups so quiet? I can’t hear any hum, but it sounds the volume on the guitar is at least 5 - maybe higher.
