Finally got to do a little work with the old girl, who I have to say handled it very well. Everyone, without exception enjoyed the day.

Great to see an "old timer" working again, and the tractor went well too, lol

Afraid the 'old timer' was scrap this morning Andy lol. The Nuffield however was as good as new :)

Well Malc, all the frustrations and the aches and pains leading up to this must have been but a distant memory when you started the first furrow. I was amazed at how good the ploughing went, and the tractor was brilliant. I could hear the pleasure in your voice and that is what it is all about. Well done to you and your friends and I hope that you have more opportunities in the future. All the best Malc.

Thanks Mike. Yes I'm pleased I waited. That's exactly how I felt when I first started ploughing, and saw how well it handled it. I know it's a damp piece of ground, but was more concerned it would be too dry, however it was almost the opposite. Don't really want to do lots of ploughing, so that small piece ended up being just right. Roy says I can go over and mow his drive, so if it warms up again next week I might pop back. Will have to wait and see, but at least I'm getting to use her again. And of course I've got the major jobs done this week, so been an enjoyable few days.

"We plough the fields and scatter the good seed on the land..." One can sense your feeling of satisfaction, Malc. This week I'm working out of home (hooray!) and around modern day tractors - principally Case machines. I suppose they will be classics in 50 years time, but it's rather hard for me (at least) to picture. Best, C.

Had a really good day Colin, however ever since the problems started. I'm wondering if, having been retired for nearly 60 years, she's scared I'll ask her to do more work. Good to hear you're home for a while. Without instruction, I couldn't drive a modern day tractor lol.

Just to let you know Malc that I have been keeping up to date with you videos ,,, this was a great day and video of the Nuffield working so well handling the heavy land very well I thought ,,,,,,, But I was obviously gutted for you when the old girl broke down on the road to Carrington ,,,, So brilliant how your friends and mates rallied around and helped you out,,,, great updates and progress reports,,,,, myself !!!! and im sure everyone else is rooting for you, I have seen you do the impossible Malc ,,, making your own working lathe,,, the working lock gates, building a working steam engine from scratch with ally cans, so im sure you will get the old girl back on the road and she will be better than before (without that leaking valve ,,,) and you will be riding high once again ,,,, so less talk of not seeing it through ,,,, just pace yourself and think of everyone out here who is willing you on and who will be right with you when you you fire her up after her rebuild ,,,,, that will be another crowning achievement and display of determination of Malc of Lincoln ,,,,,,,,,, And many thanks to all of Malcs mates who have helped him out,,,,,, keep up the good work ,,,, best regards ,,,,,,,,, Alan

Cheers Alan - hope all's well with you. Yes it's keeping me occupied, no bad thing I suppose. Definitely couldn't manage without the support from everyone, and especially from a few of my friends, who have gone well above and beyond. Only thing is after this I won't be able to use her as I want i.e. no more working or long road trips etc. Pretty sure this trip was the longest it's done for many years, so just pottering about locally, and hopefully a show ring or two. You see, I thought I had an old tractor with a newer, strong engine. It's actually the reverse. On the plus side, I did have a nice drive in almost perfect weather, was saved from driving back in the rain, although not all the way back. Shame my careful planning went out the window, but that's life eh!

Any deficiencies noted with a Nuffield compared to a Fordson Major are usually down to operator error. Nuffield were making a modern tractor when Ford were still making the "Sit Up & Beg" E27

Nice to see the Nuffield doing some proper work, I really enjoyed the video. I'm itching to get my super dexta done I'm getting a lot nearer but I keep needing parts, so it's costing me a small fortune. Hopefully when it's done I'll film some grass topping action. Good vid thanks👍

MalcOfLincoln Well it's one of those situations that's I've already got to much money into the tractor, it's going to be finished a little late for a local steam rally near me coming up soon, but I think I'll take it there next year. Have you seen my brief videos of it? It's painted now and looking quite nice.

Unfortunately many restorations cost more than the end worth.....however when I've done something in the past and people ask what it's worth, I say 'It's worth keeping'. I'm sure the same will apply to your Dexta.

  • @Menditman2014

    @Menditman2014

I sometimes think it's worth the extra because you then know what exactly has been done, if someone else has restored something there could well be some hidden bodges. I bought it about 10 years ago so the original outlay has been paid back, I think in the day I borrowed the money from a credit card😬. That was the day's they were throwing credit cards at you. Anyway take care and I'll look forward to your next Nuffield vid👍

Well it's not that much per year for a hobby is it. Most people spend more in the pub lol. I've managed to clean the fuel tank out and the filter in the top of the lift pump today. Found yet another bodge, threads stripped in the top of the lift pump, however it's holding......just. Not sure what's next with the Nuffield, maybe a trip to Lincoln again.....we'll see. I do want to do a bit of camera testing before I go to Carrington.

That did a good job on that small plot. Very sticky soil, but good thing you took the plow to it to get rid of them roots. That would have been a lot of digging otherwise.

Yes I was very pleased how it handled that little job. Roy said he did plough it with his tractor and plough last year. Think? he had mainly potatoes. Otherwise it would just have grown weeds this year, and never got touched.

It's good land, but that bit is a bit low and suffers from flooding sometimes. So ever after the recent dry spell it's still wet. Had some potatoes in last year, but don't know what he'll plant this time. Possibly a variety like any vegetable garden.

Was told after I bought her last year it's the 3.8 engine. So should handle it. Better tyres obviously. I used a similar plough with a 4.60 when I was growing up on the farm.

If it's the 38T engine, that's 60 horse. More than enough for a three furrow.

It's an early DM4, as I discovered when I met someone who told me exactly what I had, just by looking, and reading the casting numbers (see my Carrington video) So it's a 3.4, but man enough for that plough. Better tyres and weights would solve any traction problems eh! Thanks for the comment Jimmy :)
