I visited Monte Cassino once and you immediately realise why the monastery was so important and why it had to be destroyed. It exists the last outcrop of the impenetrable mountains before the Liri valley, which is the gateway to Rome. It was impossible for the allies to use the valley, with the German artillery observers above them and General Alexander realised that it was cruel to ask men to sacrifice themselves for a bunch of stone blocks, so the monastery had to go. The mistake was not seizing the ruins before the Germans did. The rebuilt monastery is a beautiful and serene place, with fabulous views. To the East is the Polish cemetery and it was they who made the final attack in May, 1944. A 1000 men of the 2nd Polish Corps are buried there, along with their commander, General Anders. He died in London in 1970 and his last wish was to be with his fallen brothers. This is very rare in history but showed the world the man he was.

I wonder why the bomber gunners in DCS are always so reluctant to shoot. There must be 150+ machine guns total in that first block of bombers and only 1 or 2 of them were firing.

That was brilliant. Wow . I see why dog fights were intense and How brave men were on both sides in 2nd WW. One mistake or a lucky shoot. And that's it. I did a little research. When US airforce were doing long range daylight bombing over Germany. The RAF helped to escort outwards and met them on the return. Usually over middle of France. Thus was to help the p51 to cross into Germany with full ammo and fuel. I didn't know that. You all ways learn something new abount the 2WW. Great . That was actually exciting to watch and hear. Great flying boys. 👍😊

Find Monte Cassino on Google Earth, zoom in and rotate the view so you're looking at it from ground level. It's mind blowing. That hill just *dominates* the route that leads to Rome.

LOved the video, but Cap was giving me a hernia when he wouldn't pull the trigger on targets in front of his nose, or when he would lead too much, or when he evaded in straight lines, or when he didn't maintain visual and let targets out of sight.

Do you guys realize, WWII American Triple Ace, with his infamous now art and call sign being "OLD CROW"...During WWII he became a Major at the age of 22yrs old which was really young even for that era...He retired as a Full Bird Colonel... Bud Anderson is still with us if weren't aware...he was a test pilot for new prototypes being used prior to and in the Korean War and was Wing Commander in Vietnam...I believe his WIng flew Thuds...He is now 100yrs old and God Bless him...A few days ago, on Dec 2, 2022 he was presented a well armed promotion in rank to Brigadier General ...What amazing man and what amazing young men. I doubt any survivors of the Battle of Britain are still with us but perhaps there are...these men are truly remarkable...in fact, the generation as a whole was. I worry the younger generation of today and present day politicians who should know better minimize their sacrifice...I am concerned few of the younger people have a realistic grasp on the sacrifices of that generation for all of us or how close the world came to the Reich's rule...Anyway, thought I would mention that. Take Care

I wondered if you guys had ever done/re-enacted any of the scenes from the film, the attack on the train, the CAP/Ground Support for the beach landing and subsequent attack on the German airfiled. Your interpretation of those attacks would be interesting.

You have to manually open up the air intake for radiator coolant when climbing like that. You could leave it on auto in leveled flight, but in situations like this you should fully open up manually. Its on your left, just above the rudder trim knob.

At the time of the bombing, The german defenders were not occupying Monte Casino, they guessed correctly that the Allies would bombard the abbey and so they waited until the bombing was finished. They occupied the rubble created by the bombing and made the attacking infantries lives absolute hell.

@@penponds The monastery was tactically important as being a high feature gave great views of the allied approach, a superb ISTAR platform. As the Russians found out in Marialpol, airstrikes and IDF are not always timey methods for displacing infantry. With the commanders under pressure of time, they had little choice but to commit ground troops to an assault, this method of warfare is always costly. Ground troops assaulting uphill against well defended static positions manned by high quality and motivated soldiers is never easy, or successful.

GR, I initially thought you were recreating a mission for the 332nd Fighter Group and 477th Bombardment Group of the US Army Air Corps. These were the famous "Red Tails", who flew both P47s and later P51s escorting bombers in Europe. The movie was garbage, but the story behind the unit is well worth checking out.
