41 was the year: Cadillac, Chevrolet, Ford, Lincoln Continental and Packard. That was class.

Wow, I didn't realize woodies of this era were actually largely wood. I always thought it was trim fastened onto metal body parts. I was also surprised to see there was still a hole to hand crank it. I would've thought that feature disappeared some years before. This channel really delivers as advertised when it comes to getting in-depth info on these oldies!

Hi Jay!: LOVE the 1941 Ford Woody! Ford seemed to give a lot of value for your money in those days. It's funny about the Ford six! Henry hated the Chevrolet "stovebolt" six so much, he refused to put one in his cars until the 1940's! He even tried an inline 5 cylinder, but it didn't balance right. Hence the Flathead V-8's Ford was so famous for. They even came out with and "economy" 60 h.p. version (around 1937, I think) to lure people who thought the 85 h.p. version was not economical. That little motor is interesting in itself. Actually being a "shrunk down" version of the regular flathead. They were very popular engines for midget cars for a LONG time. I first actually saw one of the 60's at the Don Gartlits museum. He has a drag racing museum and an "old car" museum. And in one display was a fresh out of the crate Ford V-8 60! FASCINATING! Gotta pick the Ford woody in WYR number one, and that SLICK looking 1933 Plymouth coupe for the second. Can't wait to see that video!

l think the case is that when the wood inserts on the door was split in the middle (as compared to thirds or quarters) on both Ford and Chevrolet in 1938 and 1940, respectively, it gave more elegance to woodie wagons. PS. l think the correct spelling is "woodie", for cars with wood inserts on the doors. 🙂

When this young man talks about styling and follows a car's contours with his hands, I sometimes feel like I am intruding.

It would be a really hard decision I didn’t know the 41 Plymouth looked that good in wagon form

The handsomest Fords from that decade are the 40's and 41's. Straight 6 engines have an inherent balance to them that make them last much longer. This one has the same HP as the base flathead V8. Like the 41 dash a little better. WYR -1- Chevrolet -2- Plymouth

Great choices totally agree it didn’t make sense to get the V8 when the six cylinder made more power for less money $15 back then would equate to be $308 today

My choices are the 1941 Ford Woodie wagon and the 1933 Plymouth. And I like the '41 Ford dash better than the '40...even if the glove box test failed... Another classic Woodie. I'll bet you could smell the scent of wood sitting in it. But I never knew you could still crank-start these cars this late. I would have thought you couldn't after the 1920s.

This model of car had to be tough! Think the competition was equally utilitarian, except for Packards, of course.

Seems like the 30s and 40s had the best woodie wagons. I wonder when the automakers stopped making woodies.

For the most part, full wooden bodies like this one were over with by the late 40s. At that point carmakers began switching over to either steel bodies with a little bit of wood on the outside of the steel for effect, or just plain, all steel bodies. Later in the 50s they started using the woodgrain vinyl. But of course, it wasn’t the same thing.

No car manufacturer actually used the term "Woody" for its wood bodied station wagon. The term was coined in the late 1950s and early '60s by surfers, mostly in Southern California who, needing vehicles with room to carry surfing gear, friends, girlfriends, etc., and unable to afford new station wagons, were able to pick up these old wood bodied wagons for very little money- they were just "old cars" that nobody wanted back then. The Southern California climate helped preserve the wood. Also, (I don't know if this was the case in the '40s but later, and certainly now) the term "woody" is, of course, slang for an erection. I'm a big fan of these cars, haven't actually owned one, but have built many models of them, including the '41 Ford like in the video. When talking, emailing, or otherwise communicating with females about these cars who may be unfamiliar with them, to avoid any inappropriate misunderstanding, I never say "woody," only "wooden-bodied Station Wagon" or just "Station Wagon."

another fine job Jay, thank-you for the vid.....the '41-'48 Ford was a really belly flop after the beautifully proportioned '40 Ford.....if the '49 Ford ( and Merc) wouldn't have been so good and so successful, Ford my have gone bankrupt.....I'd pick the '41 Plymouth because it was so much more car than the Ford or Chevy, and no uglier than the other 2.....for your random choice, the '33 Plymouth is light years more advanced than the other 2.....beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but some beholders need their eyes examined.....

I would prefer the 1941 Ford's interior to the 1940's. And I would choose the 1941 Plymouth woodie wagon and the 1931 Chrysler Six sedan. Your numbers for bore and stroke on the V8s do not come out--you have smaller numbers for the larger engine. Even when you convert the mm numbers, the displacements don't match. But small potatoes--it is remarkable that this car has lasted so long in such original condition.

It's notable how consistant Ford styling was thru the thirties; the similarities between the two generations are striking, (overall, I kinda prefer the '40) despite being an entirely new body on a new frame. The "Eye of Edsel" was strong in these; post-war, Ford kinda meandered all over the stylistic map, before regaining a definative "Ford Look" in '65. The woodies, essenteally being hand-built factory customs, are naturally exceptional halo cars, whatever the make. Gotta love 'em.

I will definitely have to make a point to read some of the advertising out of the actual advertisement pieces like some of the stuff that Packard said the people was very kind of cringe now.. lol

9:14 "That's a lot of brake lights." I wonder if some of those are for turn signals, and rather than mess with the wiring, they just added the turn signal lights(?)

How appropriate to have a Beach Boys song selected for a '41 Ford Woodie! I noticed that there is a WW 2 gas ration sticker on its front windshield. "A" was the most common number and limited a person to just 4 gallons of gas per week. But is it actually authentic or was it put on much later? I don't know, but it could be real I guess.

That’s crazy 4 gallons per week. One job I had I burned more gas then that going one way to work. Thank you so much for pointing that gas ration sticker out

The 41 was referred to as the first of the fat fender Fords - and in its day was quite a departure. Market dictated of course, but Ford lost some of the springhtly feel it (still) had from the pre-1935 redesign days. In many ways and for many makes, 1941 represented the maturation of automobiles into the more or less modern car. Certainly until about 1955, although of course the envelope body and eventually the modern short stroke OHV V8 would begin before then. Cars had become dependable, and somewhat standardized. WYR: 1) 41 Plymouth, more rare than the Ford, probably worth less, but also probably a better car; 2) 33 Plymouth coupe.

I remember thinking that the "plastic wood-like appliqué " that was found on many 60's thru 80's wagons was kinda cheesy considering that these 40's and 50's cars had the real deal!! Have to admit they did look good, though! Loved the "Country Squire" model wagons Ford offered ! 😉

And Mercury on their Colony Park version of the same large station wagon. Could haul 4x8 plywood or Sheetrock and six passengers while towing a trailer or a boat etc

I’m hoping to hit a lot of wagons this summer I’m going to go to Hershey I’ve seen more woody wagons at Hershey than anywhere else I’ve seen Packards there.. i’m hoping at the car shows that we might be able to get some driving footage.

I'd take any woody. Sports cars don't impress me nearly as much as these beauties.

Seemingly all (real) woody wagons have appreciated in value almost as fast as eggs! Your choices for the 41 wagons.... I pick the Chevy. I don't like the look of the 41 Fords (I really like the 40's much more), and the Plymouths just had no appeal. The 33 Plymouth was a really good looking car.

I kinda like the styling of the 1940 Ford over the '41. Still, the '41 isn't bad looking. The '41 looks well made and the wood seems to have aged well with a nice patina. Now, one more thing. Don't sing. Just don't. Please.

Crank was an alternative or emergency option. Our 1949 International was often hard to start when hot. I recall hitting the starter button while Dad cranked, to get it to spin over while out in the hay field. I once owned a 1974 Renault R12 that had the opening for a crank, and a place where it could engage the crankshaft pulley (yes, 1974).

I started my truck like that a couple times for the battery wasn’t connected right instead of messing with the battery I just kick started it with the clutch.

It was a large supply of aftermarket, turn signal kits I even saw them in the J C Whiney catalogs in the 60's. It was common for then to be mounted near the bumpers on cars, pickups they were often mounted on the fender tops and near the box sides.

Fantastic looking car! It's a really nice color combination with the wood tones and the green. First round goes to the Chevrolet (much better grille), and the second one goes to the Willys.
