Leather, wood, and varnish - you’re right - that interior likely smelled like Heaven! Choices: 1941 Packard and 1941 Packard Darrin (because it’s always the Packard). Thank you - outstanding as always! ~ Chuck

I wish I could share that smell with you guys it was absolutely incredible and it kind of almost brought a tear to my eye because I can smell that smell for over a year because of Covid. And it wasn’t overpowering but when you smelled it it was like the smell of quality Shooting this episode was bitter sweet I’ve been looking for one for a long time I’ve only seen these at Hershey but it’s solidified at least in my mind that I will never own one because you’re just unobtainable too expensive. I saw one for sale when doing this episode they were asking $189,000 for it.. that’s around Packard Darin territory you might be able to get a Darrin for cheaper than that

Hi Jay!: There is a reason that was called the "golden age of automobiles". Cars like the 1940 and '41 Packards! Kind of like the round gauges better than the oblong rectangular one, but the car is SO NICE! That color is stunning, too! And that was the BASE model!! Too bad manufacturers can't produce such a high quality car, even for $26K! The first WYR is EASY! ASK THE MAN WHO OWNS ONE! #2, Got to LOVE the Packard Darrin! A REAL Classic!
The woodwork is outstanding, along with everything else. WYR: 1. Cadillac Woody 2. Packard Darrin!!

Go Jay, I have been away, but I am back to enjoy your show mate. The Packard woody 110 was an incredible vehicle which I would be proud to own and drive today. Some cars are made the way they used to make them. This was made the way they should be. Cheers Jay to you are your family my Friend. We are missing out due to modernity subsuming style over cheapness. We could do much better in the 2020s than we have. And for a cheaper price, without destroying the safety or beauty of this style of car. Why can't/don't we? Packard were producing limousine luxury when we no longer can achieve this for under a million dollars. That is an indictment of our aspirations and creativity. Who holds us back I wonder? Our own limitations.
Crazy to think this was a basement model and personally I’d prefer the 40 packard in your first option and in the second choice again I’d take a Packard over the Cadillac. Those inflation calculators are generally pretty accurate but when it comes to cars something is off when no matter what car it is compared to today’s prices the older cars seem to be a bargain when adjusted for inflation, could you imagine buying a practicaly hand crafted car like a Packard for 27k , we can’t even get into a crappy Kia for 27k today
The Wonderful Woodie's!! This one is superb! 🤩 I do love the Cadillacs, but in the Woodie version, I prefer this one. I like the Darrin alot, but really love the Clipper best ! 😎 Video
Car companies were informed in December of 1941 of the transition to military vehicles only and the last cars produced were in February 1942 which were held for government use. These cars were 1942 models which were introduced in October to November of 1941. Yes some lucky buyers managed to snag an brand new 1942 car in the Fall of 1941.

Jay, can’t say I’ve ever heard “Look at that rack!!!” the way you used it…😂 I would LOVE to see an episode on a Packard Darrin, either a Victoria, as you pictured, or the much rarer Sports Sedan. Howard “Dutch” Darrin, after having his own design studio in Paris, was commissioned to design these cars, as he also did the pre-war Clippers. After returning from Europe, he came to California and had a reputation for designing one-offs for Hollywood clientele. You can see his “Darrin Dip” in the belt line of both cars shown here. As a matter of fact, I believe the salmon Clipper Victoria shown was a custom done by Darrin for Errol Flynn. His influence was also seen in the 1950’s Kaisers…as the early Kaiser-Frazers were downright UGLY. The 1951 and on Kaisers and the 1954 Kaiser-Darrin were elegantly designed, although were vastly underpowered in the era of the OHV V8s of the competition. As a matter of fact, Darrin bought a number of left over Kaiser-Darrins, brought them out to his Santa Monica shop and had them retrofitted with Cadillac V8s. At least one was even raced.

There were so many...Harley Earl, who came out of the Don Lee Packard dealership in Los Angeles, Gordon Buehrig from Cord/Duesenberg, Raymond Loewy at Studebaker, Virgil Exner at Studebaker and Chrysler, Dick Teague at Packard and AMC...on and on. All true artists, working in clay, steel...and sometimes aluminum and fiberglass!!!
The Packards, Hudsons, and such are quite beautiful. But if I had been living then I would probably have a ford pickup, or car. Families then would usually have just one vehicle, for everything.

WYR: 1. Tough choice, front end styling, the Caddy owns it, but it ain't a Packard or a Hudson! I guess I "wood" go with the Packard. 20
WYR 2. Duh!!!!! Clipper! stunning!
Besides Packard, both Pierce Arrow and ACD (Auburn, Cord Dusenberg) survived the great depression -Though Pierce Arrow went under during 1938 and Cord went under in 1937. Together with Packard and Cadillac they were the prestige automobile companies of the USA.

What a beautiful car! I love the hood ornament and another beautiful wood headliner and door panels. You can almost smell the wood watching the video! For the first scenario I'd go with the Packard. For the second, I'm leaning towards the Clipper. I was a little surprised the front hood still opened like that 1930s style this late. I thought everything would have been one piece by then.
1) Packard Wagon 2) Clipper I find it funny when you give today's dollar amount. Can u imagine spending 26K on a car that has PS/PB/AC/PW/PDL/Auto/Am-Fm stereo as OPTIONS? Even the cheapest econo-runabouts have that as standard equipment now.
The reason "woodies" values are so high is because it costs a small fortune to repair/replace the wood. Those who pay the 'big bucks' to have a 'woodie' restored ain't-a-gonna give it away. Being wood, from exposure to the elements, wood warps, the finish goes bad and cracks from drying out. The joints loosen up and the creaks begin. Packards had a level of expert and state-of-the-art engineering and along with Cadillac and Lincoln, were right up there with Rolls-Royce. Packard could do with engineering what nobody else could. In WWII, the top fighter planes were the P-51 Mustangs. Originally with Allison V12 engines, they were a bit lacking. The Rolls-Royce Merlin V12's were king of the hill. The U.S. wanted them for their P-51 but R-R didn't have the capacity to build any extra. Packard was assigned the task of building them. R-R felt that nobody could build them as good as they did, but Packard showed them up. Because of Packard's abilities, through finer tolerances, especially in the supercharger, the Packard-Merlin engines were considerably more powerful than those built by R-R. Many of the earlier Allison-powered P-51's were retrofitted with the Packard-Merlin engines, as well as the PT boats. Because the Merlin engines were liquid and oil-cooled, they needed heat-exchangers. Planes fitted with the Merlin engines had 'pot-bellies' to accommodate said heat exchangers. Thinking about it, those 'pot-bellies' were probably the P-51's Achilles heel . But, they were about the best air fighters. Their job, as well as the B24 bombers, was to protect the B29 'Superfortress' bombers, and they sure did. Though the Krauts had perfected the jet-fighter, it was too late in the war and they had been beaten-down so far that they didn't have the capacity and ability to build them. Had they been able to put them into mass production, the outcome of the WWII might have been different.

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain all of that I totally agree that is why woodies are so expensive.. The upkeep one would have to do to keep those bodies from just deteriorating I don’t know how many times you have to reapply the polyurethane because it thins overtime.. especially in the weather this guy has a climate control garage we’re this car lives
@automatedelectronics6062
Жыл бұрын
@@What.its.like. You know, I'm not sure what they would coat the wood with, but polyurethane was not original nor was it even around when that car was originally made. In a car judging situation it would lose points for not being authentic. Sometimes when cars are restored, they are overdone, and that is some serious points off. I've run into situations, Packards specifically, when re-finishing a radiator shell and chroming it rather than re-plating it with nickel, loses it points. The last Packard I had anything was a pair of 1926 3 or 426's. One was a concours trophy winning roadster and the other was just a 4 dr. sedan driver. Because it was the original material, we had the roadster's radiator shell re-plated with nickel. On the sedan, we basically just got it running and driving. We also repainted the engine in the proper Packard green but got into trouble with painting the firewall black instead of the correct dark blue the mid-section of the car was painted. Another interesting thing about these 2 cars, although they were 1926's, their engines had roller-cams. Packards supposedly didn't get that until 1927. But, both engines' serial numbers matched the chassis' they were in. From what I have learned in working with classic cars, when you restore them, you'd better do it like the factory built them. Any safety upgrades are accepted, like putting front disc brakes on a 1965 Mustang. A climate-controlled environment often means being air-conditioned and heated. Air-conditioning will dry out wood.

I agree with you that 1941 was the last year of the best Packard. They tried to make their cars better in the late 40s and the early to mid 50s, but when they bought Studebaker in 1954, it was the beginning of the end for Packard. And Packard got phased out in 1959 after 2 years of declining sales of the 1957 and 1958 model years. Studebaker ended production in 1966. If Packard hadn't bought Studebaker, they might've survived.

A quality family car , now a musium piece for someone to use as a tax shelter...and obviously, I would rather have the Cadillac, in the context of the 1940's having v8 was a big deal. Compaing any engine against a v8, in the terms of tech, woud be like, if in 2002 you where compaing an Amiga to a G3 imac, and, what's the Hudson even doing there, it's not even in the same league as the other two. And i thing the sond is woobopdoo-babadoowawoo, By Babise Singer and the Singettes.
The fact is that when Packard and Studebaker merged both company where actually in financial straits! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studebaker. The last Studebaker was Canadian-made in their Hamilton, Ontario plant!
