nice one Bill. Love those little AGMs. I have a couple and they are great runners. Ive stripped several lanterns and Citristrip works really good and should be easily found.

I have an old AGM made lantern that was from Sears under the “JC Higgins” name. It works well but man, it screams when it runs!

Nice video and very informative. I have an older AGM single mantle I tried to remove the valve on. It twisted off. Bummer.

It's a common problem with AGMs...that or the bung itself spins loose.

Ive used the Klean-strip paint stripper from Home Depot on some founts, with some red scotchbrite. Worked pretty good. Not sure if that’s available up there.

Got me to pause and check my container of "prime neatsfoot oil compound". And I noticed it says "compound". A commonly used weasel word for diluted with something cheap. The back of the container says the ingredients are"neatsfoot oil and other beneficial oils" without specifying what these oils are. My mind says 'beneficial for who". I will stick with my light machine oil directly on the pump leather sparingly so none gets in the lantern fuel area.. No problems with leather cracking or check valves sticking in over 50 years of use. WIKI: Neatsfoot oil is made from boiling the lower legs ,without hooves, of cattle and skimming the fat off the top of the water. It has the unique property of staying liquid at low temperatures that is not true of the rest of the animals body fat.

great videos keep them up. Wondering why you chose not use electrolysis to clean rust and paint from fount im fairly new to collecting have some 335 i want to strip and repaint for practice before i go to a rare lantern dont know best way to go sandblast paint stripper or electrolysis thanks

It wasn't worth setting up my e-tank for such a small project. I tend to use electrolysis on big things like stoves or if I've already got the tank set up. The wire wheel is quick and easy on steel founts. I'm hesitant to got that route on brass and stick to stripper, unless the paint's literally flaking off. I'd never sandblast a fount. I've seen too many guys create pinholes when sandblasting.

Great video Bill. I have an old Kamplite from the late 40s. It was super rough when I found it but I cleaned it up and got it running again. It’s one of my favorite. It fires up really big when it’s first lit too. It’s a single mantle lantern as well. Are they supposed to run on those big mantles? Like you said it’s hard to find info on them. I just put some #21 on it to test it out.

Yes. The AGM singles require a larger mantle to run properly. I typically use Peerless 24As, but I think this 3016 would actually push a Coleman or Peerless 99 without a problem.

Hey thanks man. I appreciate the info. I’ll try it when I get home tonight. I’ve been trying to find an old Aida or petromax with the rapid pre heater to mess around with. There hard to come by over here with out forking out a chunk of money.

I recently rebuilt one of these, but I had to a mesh globe. What type of Coleman globe is yours using?

  • @king.coleman

It's got an old 242 globe. The original AGM globes were the same size as the Coleman 242/200 globes.
