Now THIS is the way to do a car video. Accompany the images with a well-informed narration by the driver, telling us about the parts of the car the camera is looking at, and giving general observations as well. This is such a nice change from those "ghost" videos where the camera goes all over the car but you have no idea what you're looking at. The only sound in these ghost videos is the gravel crunching under the cameraman' shoes! This man is justifiably proud of his restoration of this landmark car.

Thanks to riddlemotors for making this video available. Enjoyed the ride with the cameraman and the inspection immensely. My father was a Cadillac specialist in his time in Melbourne, Australia. He began his apprenticeship in 1935 at a well renown garage. I have my doubts that he would have actually seen this model given their limited numbers. If he did he would know of the expertize that Cadillac went into with making this excellent car. He went into the second world war fixing and maintaining light aid vehicles for the Australian Imperial forces in Australia, Papua New Guinea and at the Solomon Islands. After the war ended in 1945 he went on years later to work for General Motors Holden, a division of General Motors in Australia and also other garages of high repute. Cadillac usually set the benchmark for the other makes in the General Motors family of divisions. cheers.

@ 0:44 Those louvers behind the grille aren't just for cosmetics. They are the engine temperature control mechanism that high end car makers used before the thermostatic valve was invented. The louvers were closed when the engine was first started and then opened up after it reached operating temperature to let air flow through the radiator. Technically, Fleetwood was owned by Fisher Body Division, not Cadillac Division, but Fisher bought it to work exclusively on higher end Cadillacs like the Series 90.

BEAUTIFUL CAR AND AN EXCELLENT VIDEO

A truly beautiful car. This is when Cadillac was really the pinnical of cars during the Great Depression. As nice as Packard was in the 1930's , the Cadillac really stood out as something very, very, special. I can almost imagine seeing President Roosevelt in the back seat!

That is 1938 Cadillac 75 series, the 39 had what they called the water fall grill, my 1939 LaSalle had the same like design. 1938 body design is also my favorite I love the grill.

A beautiful car. I have a "baby" 1936 Cadillac Series 60 Touring Sedan. The engine noise is probably due to the fact that the microphone picked up a lot of mechanical noise that you wouldn't hear if you were standing next to the car. The V-8 flatheads replaced the V-12 in 1937 and the V-16 in 1941. They could get almost as much power out of the 346 and it remained in production until 1948. In 1949, the OHV engine came out and Cadillac and Oldsmobile had a leg up on everybody.

I've heard that although the L-head V16 Cadillacs used older technology compared to the OHV V16s, they were equal in power as well as simpler and lighter. I like that, since it shows optimization is more important than expensive technology. Beautiful car, too.

I once tuned up a couple of older cars with the V configurations that a distributor at both ends.

From my recollection as a child, the engines were much quieter. Perhaps my memory is weak or the engine is at fast idle. Nonetheless seems noisy. Our Packards' engines were remarkably quiet, too.

I always wondered if the series 90 Cadillacs would've gone down the same assembly lines as the series 75's or LaSalles? Or were they done off to the side as a bespoke built to order thing? Also curious where V16 engines were built or blocks cast? Also transmission options back then? Its really hard to find good detailed info about these gorgeous vehicles.

The Caddy has all of the opulence of a Ford Pinto when compared to a Packard of the same era.

Square cylinders means length of stroke is equal to diameter of cylinder bore. Undersquare means stroke is longer than bore diameter. Oversquare means bore is larger than length of stroke.

I question the radio antenna.

I liked seeing the car sitting still and rolling, but the guy repeated himself constantly about how wonderful the car was. Also, I was amazed that the program didn't show the actually lowering of the top, which would have been fun and informative to watch. We don't even know whether the top was powered or manual

I would guess that it’s manual and took some time and effort as did the installation of the snap on trim that covers the tops mechanism, which was only briefly shown. (Just a couple snaps)

The door shut with clank not a clunk. Not discrete.

I suppose near the end of the depression, that was the closest thing to a deusenburg.

Not worth that much since he freely admits it is purely a fake-up, i. e. V-8 body mated to a V-16 engine. If he started with a real V-16 chassis/engine combo then the V-8 body would fit right on. Oh, wait, that is wrong! Unless the chassis was from a convertible it would lack the wolfhide bracing at the frame X-member. And the V-8 body would not have the passenger side access hole for the battery. And the front fenders would not fit since they have to mate with the smaller V-16 radiator housing. And the radiator bracing rods from the cowl are a different length. Hood is different too. Not last and certainly not least, the cowl data plate will either show a V-8 model number or has been totally faked up to try to document a V-16 which never existed. A shameful exhibition - now there is a real V-16 body looking for a chassis and a real V-8 chassis looking for a body.

It's not that bad. He did, indeed start with a Series 90 chassis (w/V16 engine). It was not at all uncommon for cars of this class and era to have their bodies changed out from the cowl back when their owners decided they wanted something different. It sounds like this was done by a restorer, but it appears he knew what he was doing and kept the car period-correct in all details. It isn't as valuable as a numbers-matching car, the cowl plate won't match the body style, but it probably would be welcome at most Concours d'Elegance. Frames of the time were built sturdy enough to take whatever body the customer desired, either open or closed.

"Square cylinders" is a somewhat awkward way of saying that the diameter, or bore, of the cylinder and the depth of the stroke are equal, which was rare at the time. Today virtually all internal combustion engines are "oversquare"-the bore is bigger than the stroke.

The girl doesn't look like a 39 it looks more like a 38. Doesn't a 39 1/2 grills sloping down a front fender to on either side of the the grill. I've seen more 38 and that drill looks more like a 38 rhan a 39.

He had a key ring and keys on the key ring! When the car is in motion the other keys will swing back and forth causes wear on the switch. This will make the car act up and you will have to look for a hard to find switch and have to take an expensive dash apart. DO NOT PUT A KEYRING ON ANY IGNITION KEY!

This may be news to you, but most locks are designed to take a key on a keyring without undue wear. In particular, this was not a problem for automotive locks for about 100 years. Then GM f*cked up.

When working as a locksmith back in the late 60s the huge brass keyring for women (easy to find in a purse) was a fad. The weight of those rings would chew up the key cylinder in Ford ignitions like crazy due to the back and forth motion twisting the key.

How strange to offer a flathead as well as an OHV V16? Can't see the point. Checking flathead valve clearances is a pain in the butt!

douglas mccullough The flathead V16 had hydraulic valve lifters. It was much simpler to manufacture and maintain than the earlier OHV V16.

+Laura Halliday True, Laura, and the flathead V16 engine was simply a much more modern engine, despite not having overhead valves. The short stroke design, nine main bearings, stronger and more compact block all reflect later engineering thinking than did the magnificent prior V16.

Snarks aside,,,it is a magnificent car and looks like a first-class resto. (Okay, I'll admit it....I wonder what kind of mpg's it does get,,6 or so?)

Nope, a V8 is not smoother than a V16. You can't compare a modern engine with one from the 30s, but still, this Cadillac is smoother and runs better than 90% of the junk you see on the roads today (at least here in Europe, where seeing something with more than 4 cylinders is rare...).

These engines had a very wide power band. Drivers of these cars would sometimes pull out from a stop in third gear, the closest thing that time period had to offer to automatic transmission.

When the late V-16s were new and when they are properly restored the only engine noise is from the radiator fan. This noisy clunker is an insult to what these cars really are.

It is a beautiful car, but I can do without his boasting bordering bragging.
