1931 Duesenberg Model J Town Car - Jay Leno's Garage

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

1931 Duesenberg Model J Town Car. When Jay found the last original-owner, unrestored Duesenberg in the world languishing in a Manhattan parking garage, he knew he had to call in an expert. Thanks to Randy Ema, this Woods-bodied car owned by the Strauss family is finally back on the road.

    Something nobody seems to have commented on is Jay's driving skill. If that's an original gearbox, I assume it did not have syncromesh and Jay did a pretty good job of shifting. You can even hear once in a while he'd push the gear and wait for it to mesh (grinding gears) till he got the speeds matched and got'er in. That is not an easy skill to master. He's not just a rich guy with cool cars, he's a true "car guy".

    I truly enjoy Leno´s reviews of older cars instead of the new ones. There is a certain charm on watching all these beautiful things with mechanic works. I get kind of bored watching the modern computerized cars, but in these, it is wonderful to see for instance the valves going back and forth in older engines. Glad Leno loves these cars and has the hard cash to keep them top notch. Maybe he should open a museum and make a return on the investment...

    For those who aren't familiar with Duesenbergs and other vintage automobile makes, a Duesenberg left the factory as a rolling chassis - they did not have bodies nor interiors. It was up to the owner to choose a coachbuilder to create the body and interior components and as a result every Duesenberg on earth is a unique, one-off creation. There is no such thing as a "stock" Duesenberg.

  • @kylemichaels3373

    @kylemichaels3373

    3 жыл бұрын

    Well they are considered stock if not mechanically modified. The body maker walker was owned by duesenberg. The LeBaron dual cowl phaetons are all the same except for color. Also if you buy an original and rebody it with a modern body it is still considered 100% original because of the fact that they didn't come with bodies.

    Today, those same people are designing iPhones. It's not so much that we've lost skill, we just don't have the capacity to retain the state of the art for every single era that we pass through. Imagine what Americans will be doing 5000 years from now. Do we then decry Americans as losers because there is no longer a bunch of people who can design things from the 3400s?

    The restorer owns basically all the original designs and build sheet from the factory so when someone brings a one in he can go and find the original blueprints and build sheets and if parts are warn out and unusable he has the plans and can replicate almost everything. Its amazing i hope he has people to pass this knowledge and all the documentation too who will carry on

    Tell what you want about Jay, but this guy has passion. He's not a collector of shiny and pretty cars, he has enough passion and knowledge to acquire a 1920s car in very bad shape and restore it (even through Randy) to its past glory. He is like one of these people working in museums, doing this hard work of taking something old and making it presentable, while keeping it as close as possible as what it would have been like when it was made, matching materials and replacements to match the period and the car as much as possible. You can also tell he is not just collecting shiny toys, because he actually takes the cars on the road. He is also well helped by his team and friends, trusting them enough to literally put his life between their hands, which is why you'll often hear that the brakes have been improved.

    @ Jay Leno , I am the 2nd owner of a 1936 EL Knucklehead and a 1955 FL Panhead ,both bought new by my father and still registered under the factory " A " title ,my father's name was the same as mine ,I keep the registration & plates renewed by mail so I don't have to retitle either bike . For resale purposes I'm the original owner of both bikes .

    Great cars , I appreciate the fact that you share everything, and educate along with it . I can tell you realize how fortunate you are . You live every gearheads dream . I have enjoyed mechanical equipment and cars all my life . My first was a 37 ford touring car . It was built like a Jeep/ tank . Took it off a 10 ft bank and threw about 10 ft. hi corn back to the road , when we could find it . Did not hurt it at all ...... But I had to take the time the difference between a curve and a corner . I always had a soft spot for that car . The last time I saw it ,it was in the junk yard all alone , by the river , with another car on it’s top . I still have nightmares . Thanks so much for sharing , keep it up. 👍👍

    Jay, when I was a kid probably about 16 (1980) I went with my dad to an old steel building down on Lake Quinsigamond in Shrewsbury Massachusetts inside the steel building there were about seven Duesenberg‘s all in various states of restoration. What they didn’t have they would hand make. One of the most impressive shops I ever went to… These cars truly are works of art.
