    Having been brought up around old airplanes and adding my love for all things automobile, I found this project mesmerizing! The combining of the Golden age of aviation and the automobile became greater than the parts! It reminded me of seeing an elderly couple, who'd been together for 60 years, but were sitting on a park bench, holding hands, and looking at one another with that same spark they'd felt for one another at eighteen! Together, that spark lit a fire. That fire not only warmed their lives, but those of everyone that saw them together, and realized that true love that lasted a lifetime, did exist! That's how this project made me feel when I saw how that old Cessna/Jacobson Radial and all the other aviation influence made that old '39 something it never dreamed it could be!!! The guys from Denver really did both aviation and the classic car world a favor bringing the two together in such an amazing way!! Thank you to them, and to Jay for showing us!

    I knew an unscrupulous genius who bolted a Chevy engine to a Ford transmission & stuck it in a Chrysler vehicle. Then he sold it to an old lady and made a profit. He was fun to hang with. Even drilled a hole through the side of a refrigerator to keep his beer keg cold and have the convenience of an external tap.

I sure do miss those two guys in my life. This truck reminds me of those days. Life is for doing the unusual, having fun, and never being stuck in that rut of being practical all the time. Great video Jay, America loves you and the great cars! I bet most folks don't know that Sherman Tanks in WW2 originally had 9 cylinder radial engines as their drive engines! Later a crazy complicated 30 cylinder Chrysler multibank diesel, and then finally its best engine (according to the Army) was the DOHC, 4 valve per cyl, flat plane crank, all aluminum 1100cu inch Ford V8. It was 500Hp and over 1000ftlbs all in by 2600 rpm! Cams had no belt or chain it was a incredible gear driven assembly. It was ironically, originally a 12 cylinder fighter aircraft engine designed in the late1930s, that Ford chopped off 4 cylinders from. (Rolls Royce had already secured the aircraft fighter engine contract unbeknownst to Ford.) It was by far the easiest Sherman tank engine to service and was extremely dependable despite being all aluminum and many many thousands of lbs lighter than the other engines. 30,000 were made according to historical figures.

    Just found this episode. Thank you for spending a little time on the Clark Tug. Many years ago I spent an evening trying to get a Clark to do donuts in soiled hay. It was tough. Never really got the rear to break loose but I did start a little fire. Good times. Oh the truck is pretty neat too. The V-Drive was a clever idea.

    most radial engines are air cooled, I don't think you'd be able to setup some type of cooling system for each individual cylinder (unless you're some type of wizard). Idk just my guess

  • @Se7enAte

    @Se7enAte

    TheOne AndOnly I know they're usually air cooled. But they're also usually going 150mph way up high. Putting some water jackets around the cylinders wouldn't be too hard, but would take away a lot of the aesthetic

    midget racers have designed heads for air cooled motorcycles back in the 50s (maybe earlier) to make them water cooled. Just takes the right person with the correct skills drinking or smoking the right thing on the right night for it to happen.

I'm from the bay area of California where they built the battle ships we had one of the biggest salvage yards. Then they came out with regulations where they all had to shut down.

    R.I.P. Norman Sample. I knew Gary Corns. Not well though. I had an 8 month stint as a wrecker driver moving cars inside the yard in 1991. The yard "Tow truck" I used was a late 70's dodge 1/2 ton with a 1940's era human powered winch. Turn the wheel 15 times and Up she goes. Flip a lever and use a glove to friction control spin 'er down. Founder Norm, was eco-minded(sarc)before green. I was "promoted" to winchman after my predecessor left. I knew there would be the day when the old man was laid to rest. Nice job on expansion Gary! Looks like you have the property all the way to old man Svigels place too. Sheridan/Denver, Co. A great place to leave.

    Think about this that was only one bank of 7 heads , the WWII bombers had 4 of those making up 1 engine 2 per wing. A 28 cylinder radial engine, unbelievable power. unbelievable oil and fuel consumption. Jay did I miss you showing them your radial bike, and Aviation theme what about the Chrysler turbine car of yours?

    My understanding of aircraft engines is that the RPM redline is only about 1500-2000. I would have liked to know the final drive ratio from the crank to the rear wheels. If I am correct it must be close to 1:1 or less to get any kind of speed up. Obviously, torque is more than sufficient. Also, This is the first time I have seen a piston aircraft engine run without a prop. I have always assumed that some kind of prop was needed to act as a flywheel. A very fascinating piece of engineering and first rate craftsmanship! Thanks for the closeup look.
