1937 Loose Racer - Restored After 20 Years

Ғылым және технология

Film shows before & after shots of the 21" span, rubber-powered free-flight 1937 Loose Racer, which was desperately in need of a restoration, after nearly 20 years of aggressive flying. The film ends with two beautiful flights in Wawayanda, NY. Based on the original 19" plan by Dave Livesay, the model was built in 1994, and was restored in 2014. She continues to fly well today, and will hopefully add another year to her 30 years of free-flight thru 2024. Consider giving an older model a second look, and restore it close to its original condition. It's always worth the effort.
Filmed with a Canon PowerShot SX20 & various iPhones. Music via ArtList.10.

Hi Tom! The Loose is looking GOOD! That is such an interesting design! That one and the little Tilbury-Fundy Flash are about my favorite tiny racers!

Beautiful. Planes which have a somewhat bulky fuselage, like this and the wonderful Boeing Delta really give the illusion of great solidity to something we all know to be very delicate and somewhat ethereal in nature. In this is real magic. I'm glad you gave this bird a new lease of life after so long! Impressive as ever, the flight pattern is very satisfying also. Thanks Tom! ⭐👍

I still have a photograph of this plane that you sent to me over 20 years ago when I got the plans for the Hydravion from you. I still have it up on my pin board over the building table. Keep m' flyin! love the content.

Might have to rebuild most of mine from scratch - having learned from this channel how poorly I’ve built. Then I can finally give the old original ones the fate they deserve. Love the chill vibes.

It's worth a shot for at least one of them, then compare the differences at the trim field. Good luck. Have fun.

I have a Privateer built for rubber power over 20 years ago that needs the same treatment. Maybe this spring. Thanks for the inspiration! btw, every model I have that flies over 20 seconds goes to the left. Maybe I should try flying right.

Interesting flight pattern. Steep right climb transitioning into nice right cruise, power seems to run out at around 3:09, then it transitions to left turn. Right thrust could produce right turn under power, left turn in glide can be due to freewheeling propeller. Hard to tell from video.

Lovely. Quite a long flight. Tom, i would love to see how you store your models. Since I'm in and out of the hobby(I rotate), I can keep mine on one wall, but you, being a prolific builder, probably cant get away with that. How do you keep them? Great stuff! Your videos often kick me back into action in some way.

Beautiful restoration. So glad to see it back in the air with the history it has from so many years ago. I've been slowly working on my dad's c/l team racer to return it to the air. By the way, didn't you do a video some years ago about construction of propellers from ricotta cheese containers and also 2 liter soda bottles? I've got a Gwillows Fairchild 24 I work on as time allows and was thinking about making a better prop. I can't seem to find the soda pop prop video.
