I have wondered if he gets a special nod from the cops there, no way that thing is street legal, no bumpers no signals, headlight/taillights. I have seen a special "Jay's garage" plate in some episodes he doesn't even have that.

That is most likely due to no power steering aka manual steering knuckle. With manual and Power steering that doesn't work you have a turn wide and accelerate slightly to make the turn.

Thank you Jay..Micheal & Micheal & Mercedes Benz for the ride and history of this great racing car.....what a privilege to see it being driven at a speed we can relate..purring along waiting to growl.,..wow!!..and Jay i love the 300SEL 6.3..too.my dad owned 1 of only 3 to be ordered in 1969 into South Australia..the most impressive car i have ever been in for comfort and could it corner and fast..faster than the book said and adjust the fuel pump & magneto (It did have it's original dizzy with twin sets of points..though it came with the Judson maggy for some reason..and dad swapped them about..and she ran better at high speed..fastest 4 door in the world bar none and look out..she really pushed out some DIN horses..a real magic Mercedes possibly the best, they ever made..sold it in 1990 to a man 116,000 miles and ..i still have my 1974 DOHC 280 and she still purrs...

I had to laugh when I saw the cooling fan. I once worked in a shop that sold many very nice European sports cars and one of those being an XK-E with a "reluctant cooling fan." That fan was a flat piece of steel, about 1 1/2" wide and maybe a foot long, twisted about 20 degrees from flat on each side of the "prop-shaft." By contrast, this beast has a cast aluminum prop off a BIG outboard!!! There ain't no dainty bits on this beast!!

Truly magnificent, and Jay Leno continuously relating the past to the more current keeps the story and overall picture in perspective for us many uninitiated. Excellent. One side comment: I’ve just completed a 6.3 300 SEL to showroom condition in the UK, but without doubt the classic car parts divisional M-B Germany do not have as many parts as one would hope. I bought from secondly parts dealers and recovered bits from donor cars around the world. I mention this as Jay Leno indicates everything is available, but my bank account proves otherwise. Nick.

To me this seems like the great era of automobile experimentation. Everything was being designed to see if it would work, parts were made and applied to see if there was improvement or failure. The best minds were pushed to design and develop for victory. Thank you so much Jay for showing us another great great classic from the past.

I understand the "Richie rich" reference but it really doesn't apply to Jay. He has the bucks today to have assembled one of the most complete car collections in the world but he didn't inherit that. He earned it from the days working in a car dealership as the "lot boy / runner" to the years working the comedy clubs long before the Tonight Show was ever offered to him. He earned every dime and has applied it rather well. I like the comment he has made a couple of times regarding the collection. He says something to the effect that he has had only one wife for all of these years... and all of these cars. Great Choice; Good Judgement!!
