At least by including the families on board, you save on cost on survivor benefits if it all goes sideways.

Honestly, I feel like this, and the early 25th century is the best eras of starfleet. Had the dominion war and wolf 359 not have happened, starfleet would probably have vast beautiful ships meant for exploration and science. Maybe even cruise ships. I truely do love the amount of passion and beauty they put into these ships. These ships are nice to look at it, and feel honestly welcoming, aswell as big and majestic

Thought this ship was so ugly when I was younger, but I've grown to really like it. It sits proudly with my Eaglemoss models. I always thought of the Challenger class as a sort of fast evacuation or large fast transport vessel. Great background here and great video.

I can totally see a market for these as cruise ships or passenger liners. A purpose built passenger vessel might not look too dissimilar.

You mean they’re fat. 😂 They always remind me of the decadent period of Star Trek. When Star Fleet got pretentious, holier than thou, and lazy. The lean mean Constitution, Miranda, and associates where when design was at its height. No flying apartment complex, just the tools to get the job done.

I personally have a soft spot for the Challenger. During a behind the scenes episode, it was revealed that model makers used the conning tower of a Typhoon class submarine as the warp pylons. They showed a close up of the part, and I recognized that conning tower belonging to the Red October, which I had at the time. I recognized the brick style details along the hull and the periscope openings. I kept the Red October long into my 20s (discarded it in 2008, have no idea where). Perhaps a lame attachment, but I love it all the same... also remember the Challenger disaster of 86, so lots of nostalgia swirling with this ship.

That was one thing that always bothered me about STTNG that here is this huge Galaxy class Star ship with over 1000 people on board with families etcetera suggesting these ships are out there exploring deep space away from the home quadrant and yet we never heard of them doing that. Instead a ship like the Enterprise stays pretty close to home doing boring supply runs or mapping a star cluster not that far away. It was just lazy story telling, it wasn’t until Voyager which was by accident and DS9 and the wormhole to the game quadrant that a star ship and crew really had to show it’s true potential and initiative.

Until you created this episode I never cared for this design. However looking at the phaser coverage and the three shuttle bays it has alot of potential. I could also see this as a testbed for the future arrangement for the Intrepid class engines as these engines, though mounted above and below, also also lack line of sight from each other.

I am thinking the refit was probably actually implementation of the galaxy class auto docking system as intended. It's a pity they didn't do it since it could have provided data for the multi vector attack system. Who knows maybe one was refitted for that classes development.

There's a fan-made starship design that i really liked, called the: "Star Knight-class" it's hull looked like the love-child of the prometheous-class and intrepid-class. It's most destinctive design feature was her warp engine. Instead of the traditional two nacelle engine pylons, the warp engine was a oval-shaped hoop that was horizontally mounted in place where the traditional nacelles would be. The ship class was built around the time of the nemesis movie, given the type destinction of an "enhanced-deterant cruiser" euthemism like the defiant-class being an "escort".

Not in Trek! Often times starships are simply given a new reg Numbers and the name moves on without a Dash Letter!

The ship looks good...but i thought a rule was that the nacelles needed to "see" each other cause of the radiation emitted between them would be very dangerous.

No problem, and the variable geometry warp drive, used in Voyager was so the class didn't harm subspace as seen in the TNG Episode Force of Nature :)

This is a canon ship? I thought it was a fan design, because according to Roddenberry's nacelle rules this ship would kill everybody on board.

Yes this ship is Canon, and there is no such rule in Trek. Though Roddenberry attempted to create it, breaking it himself multiple times throughout Trek, this rule is really just a myth! And PS Roddenberry himself signed off on this design!

@@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics 👍 I just thought the creators of TNG were just being a bit fly with the rules. Thinking how the Federation likes to kitbash things, this explains why they have the ship shapes they do, for convenience, ease of repair and production line ship parts. Great, I'm now mentally comparing federation ships to gummi ships.

Well you don't really know how something is going to work as you say it will till you test it. This was just one that didn't work out. But don't look at it as a failure. Look at it as finding out how NOT to do something. Because there were still good things about this ship they used on the GALAXY CLASS.

But it IS consistent! As there are starships WITH a deflector and Starships WITHOUT a Deflector... Just like there are planes with Jet Engines and Planes with Propellers, or Trucks with 4 Wheels or with 6, or 8... It's still consistent, with NO doubt. as there are just simply more then one way of achieving the same result!
