1926 GP Salmson Part 1 - Ivan's Shed
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Here we show Ivan's 1926 GP Salmson which he journeyed all the way to Portugal to purchase. These are very rare cars, and Ivan has always wanted his own due to his father being a Salmson racing mechanic before WW1. Watch as we highlight original features of the car, and explain which jobs are yet to be done as part of the restoration process.

I learned a lot today about a car I'd never heard of. What a well made film and all without the annoying Rock or House music. Superb!
So happy he was able to find such car and work on it remembering of his youth and his dad. What a great story
What a wonderful storyteller! It's obvious what a joyful labor this is to him, and it's marvelous that he was able to find a Salmson that was relatively unmolested as well as lightly owned. I feel that fate is rewarding him for a life well-lived, and I so appreciate the videographer and editor for crafting such a sensitive and watchable piece. The Salmson and Ivan's knowledge & recollections are the show, as it should be. Cheers, and thank you for giving this day a bright beginning!
What a beautiful emotional connection this man has with with this car. It's wonderful to see his pleasure with the simplest of things, such as the sound the valve cover made when you just set it on the motor, and his delight to discover that he did indeed have the same steering wheel as his dad's car had. Oh, and the valve-tool with his dad's number on it, and finally being able to actually use that too the same way his dad did. Incredible human story. =)
Ivan's "shed" looks like heaven to me👌🇬🇧 He certainly knows his stuff 👏👏👏👏🔥🔥🔥🔥🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Beautiful story. I am glad he is having a great time with this car. The right vehicle to the perfect owner!!!
Dear Ivan I was really touched when you produced your dad's Salmson valve tool. So much old stuff just gets binned these days because of the throwaway society we live in. I'm just a little bit younger than you and my dad died when I was 18 months old so obviously I don't remember him. But he was a great bookworm and I do have a few of his books which is my own way of remembering him. Thanks for a lovely video.
DOHC in 1926! Wow. This will be a good restauration, not the rushjobs you see on discovery. A true conservation. Hats off.
I'm so glad "I've" found these videos. They"re a breath of fresh air to the vintage motor world.
During these Covid ridden times discovering a fabulous KZread channel makes for an extra special day. Like a kid in a sweet shop. Well done, Mr. Dutton. Looking forward to your archive.
I could almost smell the engine when it started. Wonderful.
That car was a heck of a lucky find. Lots of Luck with it. It certainly runs superb.

Best old car video i have seen for a while. {Historical Race Car enthusiast},thanks youtube.
This channel deserves more subsciptions, views and likes. Entertaining and educational, great presentation by a genuine gear head.
Discovered you today while I was searching the depths of KZread. What an interesting, enthusiastic and knowledgeable gentleman! I’m working through all of your videos posted so far. Takes me back to my time as a pump attendant/odd job boy at the local garage as a 13 year old in 1970. The owner had been working on cars since before WW2 and would always repair or manufacture parts if it was possible. Can’t wait for more. 👍🏻👍🏻
Phenomenal story!! Bravo to all your achievements! Your steady hand and life long passion is an inspiration. I love to see all your other cars in the background. 👍🎩👍🎩🎵
Bravo, thank goodness there are people like Ivan and his ilk out there with their enthusiasm, dedication, knowledge and patience with restoring and maintaining these magnificent old vehicles for ignoramuses like me to enjoy in the flesh.
I’ve never heard of this car but what an interesting story and example. The connection to your father and memories of sights and sounds is priceless. So glad it found you and you it😊
This was the most beautiful and enjoyable video I’ve seen for years. Thank you!
Wonderful story. She looks amazing. Looking forward to part 2.
My father drove , well raced a Samson and an Amillcar. I’m nearly 70 and can hear him enthusing about how beautifully built they were. My first time in the shed, just wow.
Just subscribed. What a wonderful tribute to your father. Can’t wait to see it reassembled to its original state.
I hope all is well! I found this video and it filled me with a really great feeling!! I will be watching many more of these. I am a chemical engineer but I am starting a small engine mechanic business and mobile welding with a small bit of machining. Ivan, you are truly a treasure. I hope I get a chance to meet you my friend. I am in the states so I will not hold my breath. God Bless!
Brilliant Ivan. Absolutely love your videos .
Great find Ivan. Your enthusiasm is infectious. The connection with your Father's old car makes it even better. Dean in Oxfordshire.
And this is the second one I've watched Ivan and very nice to hear your passion for originality and how you go about trying to keep it that way. We are restoring a 1925 Newton-Ceirano and a 1924 Crossley here in Hertfordshire so good to watch your details on a continental car alongside your Edwardian racer video.
It makes one proud to be an Englishman just knowing Englishman such as this still exist .quirky Englishman and their sheds what wonderful creations have been born in such sheds .we were and still are albeit on a smaller scale fantastic engineers.

If you like quirky Englishmen who are knowledgeable and brilliant Engineers check out a chap called Millyard here on KZread who builds his own motorcycles. Here is an article about his 8 litre Dodge engined Viper V ten cylinder motorcycle capable of 250mph. www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&client=ms-android-samsung-rev2&source=android-browser&q=millyard+viper+v10
You have a marvelous channel. Thank you for sharing you knowledge with the world.
What an interesting vlog with a very knowledgeable gentleman.
That Salmson without the body shell is just a big go-kart -- looks like a ton of fun!
Brilliant. Thanks Ivan.
That's a sweet running little engine, considering how long it's been stood. Old race car engines can be beautiful pieces of design and engineering, especially when you take into account the technology available at the time.
Well done getting that one Ivan! Best of luck....

New video out next week on the progress that has been made on the car over the last 2 years if you’re interested. Thanks for watching..
I'm certain that by the time Ivan has restored the Salmon, it will be perfect!!👍👍
Clicked and subscribed straightaway, because I've learnt something original for once, I notice you've got a Nissan figaro in the corner there which I know thoroughly and am an expert in building their engines and gearboxes as I regulary work on them.
Read somewhere that Salmson sub-contracted very little indeed and this included making their own magnetos. Did this arise as a means of ensuring quality control on the aero engine side which was carried over to the cars? One of the effects of World War One was to deny the products of Bosch etc. to France. This led de Dion to take up magneto manufacture. Whatever the reason, Salmon were far from being the ''assembler of other people's bits''' characteristic of this market sector.
hello , beautiful video, it a shame that Portugal as lost one more nice car, but at the same it will coming to live in a good hands.
Great stuff
Very interesting great video 👍.
Now, i aint a 30s and before car person, but i gotta admit that car and engine looks beautiful
I'm happy for this guy.
This race car has very little wear on the brake pedal. Excellent 😃
Oh the joy of getting your new project home and happily poking at things: "ooh it's got one of those- that's nice... those are wrong.. never mind... this is in amazing condition.. " and so on. Then out come the WD40 and the spanners....
Crazy to think it would hardly buy a washer on a f1 car today good luck to you on your project sir
Wonderful ❤️👍
Real old school bloke one of not many left
Never heard of the term Monkey Metal, Aka Pot Metal, as I've just learnt by SPAGOOLING IT...Great vid Sir
what a treasure to watch
What a sweet engine, sounds so good, must sound like angels singing at speed. What's the RPM range and speeds in each gear?
I have a full radiator and shell for that car , it has been in my shop for over 25 Years

good on you, sir
I love your idea of "restoration".. Give it a wipe with an oily rag and enjoy it 🤣😂.. 👍
Try Southwards Museum, Wellington New Zealand, They have Stutz and may know of distributor caps. Ivan Turnbull
More travel in the steering wheel than the suspension😉
Will you be at Kop Hill this year ?
Con una Salmson 1100 iniziò a gareggiare Luigi Fagioli. C'è una foto che lo ritrae mentre spinge la vettura oramai amnutolita fino al traguardo. Proprio una bella verturetta, semplicità disarmante quanto affiscinante.
What's that motorized bike leaning against the back wall there?
Fabulou videos
Pre Brexit, today it would be tax, tariff and VAT to import it to the U.K. 🤦♂️🤯
@PurityVendetta

Yes, brexit has made importing and exporting vehicles and parts economically impossible but I imagine there will be fewer and fewer people in the UK with money to do anything.
so this 1926 car is in better condition than most used cars
👍👏😎
Офигеть. Прикольно
Check Ivan’s channel, he’s built it and trialling it
Was this Monsieur Hulots car or was his car an Amilcar?

Monsieur Hulot called, he's missing his voiture!
Im amazed by these things from a time when the metalurgy wasnt up to snuff, so they had to ludicrously overbuild things or get creative to make parts durable enough .. Like the old 30s Harley Davidson boardtrack racers, they didnt have exhaust valves up to snuff, so what they did was bore a hole in the exhaust port directly to atmosphere so the valve wouldnt overheat and melt, plus the added effect was a blast of red flame just right next to the rider's calf lol .. You had to be half mad or half idiotic to ride those things in period - probably a bit of both!
Enormous gap between these twin cam Salmsons and the power units found in "yer avrage" light car of the time. Incidentally I think Salmsons, along with Hispano-Suiza and the original Bugatti company, never made a left hand drive car. Says everything really.

Well, before WWII quite a few European countries had RHD cars so there was a much larger market for them than today. The oddest exception was Sweden, where they drove on the left-hand side of the road in LHD cars until 1967.
NO ! IT'S ! STERLING !! MOSS !!!

I just noticed 12 people didn't like this video, which is sad really. Something obviously happened when they were children ?.. Mums maybe slipped and dropped them on thier head perhaps 🤔... 😂🤣😂🤯
