1916 Electric Kids Toy Oven - Cleaning & Food Cooking!

Ойын-сауық

Wow! A toy oven from 1916! It cooked my food great I was happy with my food results. Not my normal mini food, but still fun.
Lucky Penny Thoughts: Here is the 1915 patent to this oven. bit.ly/1915OvenPatent It was really cool to find out the inventor was from Illinois! You can see how the oven has extra heating elements around it. Overall I was happy with how this oven cooked, the multiple burners and how fast the oven toasted my bread. Unfortunately this oven will not work for the food series I have planned, but I still wanted to test it and show you how it worked.
Later!

Hey everyone! Thanks for checking in today. It took me awhile to find the patent for this oven. Look in the description you will see I linked to it on Google Patents. The patent states this is a toy size oven. The company was an electric company and also made full size ovens. It is cool that they were from Chicago Illinois :) "My invention relates to electrical stoves and particularly to stoves of toy size which can be used with safety and efficiency by children and even older persons......"

It is! But this is the case with all antiques the owner is dead now. Also, for me it freaks me out to hear that someone was born in the 90s or 2000s because I was born in 1975, but still feel and consider myself to be very young. I graduated in 94 and it still feels like it was yesterday even tho I am now 40, I have no children and so to me the very idea that someones that much younger is crazy to me. I still feel 20 years old, and act like it also really.

I do believe that these were door to door salesman's samples of the real ovens that they would carry around for demos in prospective buyer's homes. They likely were then sold or taken to the salesmen's children after the model was discontinued. My mom worked for Ma Bell in the 60s and 70s and I also had many smaller scale display models of different items that the company used. All for business meetings and things of that nature where having to move the object in question was impractical. I had a truck with the spools of cable and upgrades that were highlighted to cut on 3rd party contractors , a primitive model of a fax machine (non working of course), a model of a telex (also non working) and other company products. I wish I had saved them, but they took a beating and were thrown out at some point.

Yeah I agree this was most likely a salesman model when it was first introduced. Although I would imagine most households in 1916 still used coal rather than electricity

Not at all dangerous if you have a brain. Children back then and well into the 90s had the brains and ability to use toys that were not all dumbed down and forced to be 100% stupidity proof like today, none of us are dead or mained because our parents actually parented, schools actually taught, and we used common sense and our minds more. Todays children do not and it is not because they couldn't or are any stupider or any such thing. It is society and parenting that has failed them. Todays children could safely use the toys of before if people taught them properly, and they used sense and patience like we once did.

A Kayfabe Uhh. No. They were regular. They got burned just like these kids would. This is precisely why they changed things. Kids got hurt a lot. Now, their parents didn't sue as much BUT because of that, MORE KIDS GOT HURT. Toys are better now. I don't need my kid to lose an eye (and the company selling it knowing the real possibilty of that) just to try to prove how tough or "smart" she is. Smart people don't do stupid things like play with dangerous items.😔

This oven is really cool. Never knew ovens like this existed before the 60s. It would be awesome if you showed a video stripping down an oven like this to its bare bones and doing a full restoration with new paint etc. The before and after would be amazing to see. I wonder how much collectors would be willing to pay at auction for an oven this old. When I see vintage items such as this my mind always goes to how cool it would be to bring the item to Antiques Roadshow and get it appraised. I live in NY and the show came here about two years ago and I applied for tickets to go. The show does a lottery for two free tickets per person and you can only bring two items to be appraised. I didn't get the tickets, but I will try if the show ever comes back this way. My mom just got a really amazing jewelry scale from my grandfather that I would be interested in getting appraised. Anyway, I'm off topic. I can't wait for the mini food channel to go live. Question, will you be moving all future maker set videos to that channel and only make mini food with them or will you still continue to do oven and maker videos here with larger food? I watch many videos on this channel but the maker and oven videos are my all time favorite.

Actually, for a toy that's 100 years old, it looks damn good even before you spruced it up. For sticky tape residue use Goo be Gone, works pretty good, it breaks down the adhesive without destroying the surface it's on. The old wiring scares me, you really should have it rewired with modern materials. Heating elements draw a lot of power and those wires are too old for that now. I got a kick out of the mini Revere Ware sauce pan complete with lid. My mother had a real set of those. In the old days (the turn of the last century) when real stoves like that existed that heated up with the use of either coal or wood, the burners that were right over the fire box (usually on the left) were the hottest burners. The ones over the oven were medium temps and the ones way off to the right were the coolest ones used just to keep things warm until ready to serve. You almost always had a big pot of water on the stove that was kept warm for any use. Some stoves had a big water tank installed on the side of the stove to have hot water on demand as long as the stove had a fire in it. Back in those days, families were generally larger, more children in the household and often you had several generations living under one roof. Kids back in those days were expected to help out as much as possible, cooking, cleaning, taking care of younger kids and the grandparents. Children were introduced to chores earlier in life than they are now. Cooking at an earlier age was not uncommon, so an electric toy stove from 1916 could be used by an 8-10 year old with confidence that the child wasn't going to do something dumb with it. My mother started me cooking on her electric stove and sewing machine when I was 5 years old. She trusted me not to do something harmful to myself. But yes, I was supervised the whole time.

weren't these used for Oven Salesman to show examples of the bigger models of them? pretty sure they weren't intended to be used as toys, but they probably were anyways. I think Easy Bake was the first company to release a toy oven in the late 60's. I remember seeing almost Tue exact same oven as this on an episode of American Restoration. Pretty cool.

Good question. The stove did have a larger real version. I was able to track down the patent for this stove, and the inventor, did get the patent for this as a kids stove. (link in the description) The company did make full size stoves.
