I've had that same wakeup before, face in the airbag and someone knocking on the window. It's funny how quickly you snap back to action, like this kid getting right out and putting his hands behind his back. I wasn't drunk though, just stupid, and since I'd only hit a giant rock being used as barricade the guy knocking on my window helped me push the car into a nearby parking lot, I said "Thanks!" and I ran like the wind.

All y'all saying they don't understand why modern cars are flimsy: they're designed to crumple like that. If cars didn't, the injuries would be far worse despite the car looking less damaged. It takes the force of the crash and absorbs it by crumpling the metal so less of the impact reaches people inside. Basically it's not flimsy, it's doing what it was designed for and it actually makes people safer. It's all physics and engineering I don't understand, but that's how it was explained to me by my uncle who is an engineer.

Correct. Each crumple takes a portion of the force. If your car never crumpled you'd take your full share with zero reduction. They don't make bicycles like they used too either, but a penny farthing just isn't safe. Ya know?

Yep! The fact that they survived a collision at 100+ miles an hour on open road is testament to the engineering. Basically what kills is acceleration, and a crash involves some duration of time over which that acceleration occurs. When the vehicle enters a collision it has a certain amount of impulse, which is force over time, and force is a measure of speed and mass. Basically, if we can maximize the amount of time over which the collision occurs, the impulse is the same so then the force must minimize, since mass is also constant (for the most part). Therefore the only thing that can minimize in response to a longer collision is the acceleration, and since acceleration kills we can minimize it by maximizing the time over which it occurs. We do that by having the metal crumple which takes both energy and time, saving lives.

Shit, this isn’t true for mid engine/ rear engine cars. You hit something at a stand still head on in one of those at high speed and you’re not only a goner your body will be obliterated. Ever seen the photos of Nikki Catsouras? Absolutely awful. She was doing 100mph or so on a California tollway, sideswiped a Honda, lost control and careened into a tollbooth. Solid concrete building. Terrible accident.

When the cop said "Those are high quality headlights" I almost died laughing 🤣 That really caught me off guard!

Yet sadly when they’re that young they don’t see what we see. We can already see where this kids life is going and it’s nowhere good. I have a grown son but no daughters and my son NEVER behaved like this kid. He started working at 15 and put himself through university and now has his engineering degree. I come up to you and say hello and you ask how much I had and I say not enough for you to pull me over. Well nobody has pulled anybody over so it can work what he said.
