19. The Tomcat and 'Top Gun' (the movie)
Ғылым және технология
The 1986 smash film "Top Gun" put #navalaviation in the minds of millions and the #f14tomcat in the hearts of even more.
On this episode, former F-14 pilots “Bozo” Abel and “Smegs” Semcken provide a rare look into the making of this memorable film, from the canopy-to-canopy scene, to the tower flyby and low-altitude flights over the desert, it's all here in this episode of the 'F-14 Tomcast.'

The one and only Bozo Abel! It was a delight to hear about his aviation experience from his youth up to the time Top Gun was filmed. I didn't know until watching this interview that he was into building model planes.
This is the best discussion of the making of Top Gun.
I was 17 when TG came out, it informed my decision to join the Navy. Crappy eyes prevented me from being a pilot/NFO, but I was aircrew, and I did get my commission.
Wow ! No one could have even imagined what this all took to bring this movie to fruationz, im just total awe of eveeryone of you. Thank you all !!
the famous bozo!, I remember tom cruise talking about him in an interview.

that was such a funny interview by Tom.
Second time watching this. What a great interview, interesting fun fact, Bozo did a speech at the fly in community where my dad lives. Jungle also has a hanger there! This is a great series..
I remember Tom Cruise telling the story of how Bozo turned him into a pretzel in the back seat :)
Bozo is so right about the start of up the movie being the best viewing of carrier ops, it's what got me to want to get into the Navy. Sadly motorcycle accident prevented that. These are great stories, can't imagine how proud your kids and grandkids are telling their friends these stories.
Best one yet! Enjoyed this very much, great background stories, absolutely amazing! Love it!
Damm!!.. You guys are awesome!!.. The naval aviation around that time, you guys made it very very cool!!.. Nothing in this newer generations could ever surpass you guy's era of military aviation from the 80s to THE 90s!!
Great stuff! If I'm not mistaken, the exact F-14 Bozo flew during the tower flyby scene is on static display on the deck of the Lexington in Corpus Christi, TX.
can't wait for the speed & angels episode!

Some really great stories in this one. Awesome episode.
Creating a map that led civilian women straight to the club is some real Navy shit lmao
Great episode!
Thank you for your service and your efforts in making MY STILL FAVORITE MOVIE! I'm guessing Lt. Stephens didn't get his nickname "Organ" by having a big heart. Right? I'm sure he's a great guy too.😂
Awesome and entertaining, guys!
Loved! Loved! Loved this chat!! 🌟🌟

Us too on the USS Lexington in 89. Everyone was still talking about it then, 3 years later!!
I was an Army Instructor Pilot at Ft Rucker when the movie premiered. I saw it as a combat aviator, but still thought it was good. The embarrassing event was the Army wanted to make a movie similar to Top Gun called “Firebirds”. It was so cringeworthy I wanted to hide my occupation.

Air Force peeps say the same about "Iron Eagle." Oh well.
This should be an iTunes extra when you buy the movie!

I always wondered who the guy with the big hair out singing everyone was.
