18th century fall wardrobe: red cloak

I try my best to recreate a 1770s wool cloak. The original can be found here

I decided to leave the edges raw on this and ofcourse now that is finished I see a few things I would have done differently if I were to make this again but that is the nature of sewing and especially recreations, it's always a learning process that is never finished even if the garment is.
My fabric is a cardinal red vintage broadcloth, a very popular cloak color for the 18th century and I sew it together with silk thread.

The cape and the tartan gown complement each other beautifully 😊 I loved the getting dressed dance! My kind of whimsy 😂

I love the mix of ballet and the slightly sensual way you put on your stockings at the beginning. 😆 It’s beautiful and so is this project.

Without seeing the actual cloaks I can't be sure but my opinion is that you start from a half circle lengthened at the ends to make the front 'tails'. The shaping at the end is done with a 'collar stand' that is flat on the side that attaches to the hood than rounded where it attaches to the cloak. You can see this piece in some of the pictures. I'm also guessing that piece is stiffened in some way to make it stand up. It's a piece that I am not seeing here I believe? I like the result but I hope you don't mind me saying that adding those edgings would have made it even better. I love red cloaks even though I normal dislike red. I guess it's because of the children's tale. :-)

I wasn't sure based on the pictures if it's an actual piece or just a pieced bit so left it off. I'm not sure if you mean the extra piece of the collar stand is stiffened? But I didn't stiffen the collar stand since mine is double wool instead of wool and silk and it stands pretty much on it's own. And thank you for your suggestion 😊 I really wanted to make this one using just things I already own so I left the edgings off but I agree they do make original lovely. Maybe I'll make another some time for more fancy use and add them to that and keep this one for more rugged wear

@@sewthroughtime I mean that it is an extra piece. There are 2 pieces between the cloak and hood. It has a collar stand - which is a shaped piece wider in the middle back tampering to nothing towards the front- that fits against what I assume is a half circle neckline and that does the job of raising the collar in the back so that is lays almost against the hairline at the neck. The you have the collar between the collar stand and hood. I think it is there to make the hood fall better. Those pleats in the hood would cause issues if placed directly on the collar stand. @Nicole Rudolph her latest video shows at timemark 7:42 an Edwardian example of an enforced collar stand. This one is unusual with all that stitching but she posted this video last evening and I thought it might make things more visual for you. Wonderful to have everything already in-house right?! I *might* have a bit to much fabric at home from my years working in a fabric store. Shhh...

Oh yes now I got you. I went back to look at the pictures and you are right, it most likely has that. Oh well, luckily this works like this too. 😅 I don't think I've ever seen that kind of collar reenforcing in this era before. It makes the original an even more interesting piece 😊
