A Czech artist working in Paris, Alphonse Maria Mucha (1860-1939) is probably more responsible than anyone else for creating the Art Nouveau style. His flowery, ornate style was born literally overnight when he was pressed to make a poster for American singer Sarah Bernhardt, who was a sensation in Paris at the time. Beside posters, he is well known for his paintings, illustrations, architectural designs, and sculptures. His body of work was so diverse that he is only recently gaining recognition in the art world for his enduring artistic influence and monumental talent.
Always a treat to watch and listen to Nicholas Lowry when he is appraising the treasures brought to him. He does his homework, knows his craft...and SHOWS his passion for ALL of us! Love The Road Show....Cheers Everyone!
Mucha was a genius and also one of the most prolific and generous artists that ever lived.

Alphonse Mucha, one of my favorite artists
Nicho knows that Mucha is Czech. Like Mucha, he was an expatriate--he lived in Prague in the early 1990s. Incidentally, he hosted a radio show and for a awhile, I had a small segment on his show once a week. He didn't wear plaid back then, but he had the most voluminous, glorious head of hair in all of Europe.
this is my favorite work of mucha :) very lucky to have it
Holy Moses I would love to have that!
A nice gift indeed

More iconic than Rizla imo.
I never saw one… rare find. Love the explanation of the brand on the side.
if that is representative of mucha, i'm in love. i find that style unbelievably attractive. the sweeping thick outlines and the nice fine details all layered on top of the repeating patterns really makes for something enjoyable to look at.
Beautiful poster
I have purchased several French movie posters in a size called "grand." Grand posters are 60x40 and are sent to theaters folded. I suspect that this poster's fold lines were made at the factory. Theoretically, it would be possible for unfolded posters to exist, most likely given to friends of the printing company and the client.
First thing, it's not common... secondly Mucha was Czech.
The artist is Czech, not French. A Czech living in Paris who later returned.
That suit though...

I have several prints of Muchas that were printed in the early 80 that sell at a fairly steady clip on ebay for 20 bux a piece

Something out of the 70’s I would say.
CZECH, not French.
Mr. Lowry incorrectly claims that cigarettes were still rolled by hand when this poster was printed. in 1880 James Bonsack invented a machine that could roll 210 cigarettes a minute, or 20,000 cigarettes in 10 hours. By 1898 machine rolled cigarettes were commonplace.
I like to know the value of the antique suit the guy is wearing.

@3:10 The good part.
Mucha wasn't French. He was from the region called Bohemia at the time and was proud of his Slavic roots. Later, Bohemia became known as Czechoslovakia and today it is now two separate nations. The Czech republic and Slovakia - the birth place of Melania Trump. But Mucha lived in France and did much of his work there.

That suit tho.
You get the feeling with Americans that you could take all the art out of a gallery and just frame the bank notes of the sell price. You know just take the poster out of the frame and replace it with a $1000 note. They would not see a difference.
Why didn't they pan down to his 2 foot long clown shoes???

go to google translate, on the left side type "mucha" and from the "detect language" choose english. on the right side, choose czech. click on the speaker icon to hear how it sounds. english really doesn't have that sound so it typically is changed to a "k" sound.
