18 Cacti That Will Blow Your Mind! | Rare Cactus Unboxing

G'day, guys! In today's video, I chat with you about my recent deep dive into the unfathomably deep rabbit hole that is cacti... I unbox 18 rare and strange cacti that I purchased from Spine City and Succerland recently.
Many of these cacti are on graft, which is a really interesting way to speed up the growth of your cactus collection, after all, it can take decades for cacti to size up when hard grown.
Some of the genera of cactus include:
- Copiapoa
- Gymnocalycium
- Astrophytum
- Ariocarpus
- Thelocephala
- Neochilenia
- Stenocactus
- Turbinicarpus
- Mammillaria
- Eriosyce
- and more!

Thanks Kathy and Alice. I really appreciate the kind words and support you've both shown me and the channel :D Definitely obsessed with learning new things and then sharing what I've learnt. So glad it's interesting enough to watch an hour of haha If I may be so shameless, if you want to hear me rant and rave about stuff related to Australia and the news, I sit down with my father and do podcast episodes on my English podcast. The series is called 'The Goss'. You can find it on the Aussie English Podcast here - podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/aussie-english/id1089059076 and on my website, you'll see the back catalog of Goss episodes here - aussieenglish.com.au/the-goss/ This is my day job lol So, I've been talking people's heads off for a while now haha. The only warning is I'm pretty much an open book in these episodes re: my opinion on everything, so you might end up learning too much about me and not agree with certain things. haha

Great video! I'm midway through... Twenty years ago, I started with succulents, which were hard to find in my small town area. I had a ton though and very quickly migrated into cacti instead. They were my main jam for quite awhile. Cacti are still high on my list even though I got into houseplants about 15 years ago. I will still snatch up a unique one if I find one! Most of the Cacti I have are the same ones I got long ago. Unique ones are still hard to find around here unfortunately. My pride and joy one (unknown species) is big enough, he wears a human size Santa hat for Christmas! 😆 Anyway, super enjoying your videos, definitely including this unboxing!

Welcome to the world of succulents. I’ve been collecting and growing them for over 20 years. I am just getting into aroids and I have stayed away from Anthuriums and Alocasias because I have been so spoiled with the care required of succulents. Too funny. “I’ll be watching you” really is a stalker song. I always laughed when ppl dedicated it as a romantic song back in the old days on the radio. 😂 Pencil is great tip. Co-sign on that. Markers failed me for years. I’ve stepped my label game up. Aluminum tags for outside plants/trees. Print vinyl labels from maker on the pots for indoors. Why did I think Thanos! When you rocked that glove? All you needed was a snap!

😂That was a life epiphany for me. I'm a Realtor IRL. I had a client from the UK looking at investment properties. We had a good 10 min debate as to how each of us (US vs UK) said the word wrong. I was on the "where the hell do you get the extra letters?" and he was team "Americans don't use all of them". Hillarious once we realized our countries spell it differently. Unfortunately, no don’t stamp. I use a pen and just print on them. They are very soft and easy to write on. Crazy, before I never cared so much about labels until I started getting different blueberries 🫐. I couldn’t look like an idiot when friends wanted to trade cuttings. Saying “yummy big blueberry” just doesn’t cut it. 🤪

Hi!!!! I just came across your vid even tho its a year old. The whole reason i clicked on it cuz I saw the magic word - "Cactus"❗❗❗ Cactuses are the ONLY plants i do. I have about 300 of them & steadily growing! I dont do aroids & monsteras & all that other fancy stuff like everyone else seems to be into. I got into cactuses just about 2 years ago, before then i didnt think plants just wernt my cup of tea. But cactuses have a whole different appeal about them! They are a symbol of strength & endurance! They also teach us that no matter how tough life may get-- the desert storms, the rain for days & days, the predators trying to devour us or a cacti, the cacti just keeps on pushing through! They only get tougher through the hard times! Heck, they can be beheaded & they can grow back not just 1 extra head but sometimes 5 extra & more!!! When i grow up i want to be a Cactus!!!! I enjoyed watching your video, but i probably never seen u b4 before because u do all those fancy pants plants. The foo-foo plants lol, but i personally would LOVE to see you do more videos about cactuses!! You seem like a very intelligent man, getting to study biology in the past, was that what u said?!! Very intresting. But regardless, whatever u decide to do or other vids to make, i wish u the best of luck, Loads of subcribers & have lots of FUN!!! Thanks again for the fun vid! Was nice to "meet" ya😊 Sincerely, Anita

Some other really cool cacti: Eulychnia castanea, Lophocereus schotti f. monstrosus, Tephrocactus geometricus, Astrophytum capricorne niveum, Hylocalycium chimera, Ferocactus histrix! Admittedly, whenever I killed a cactus, I killed it within a few days 😂 Especially with overwatering they turn into mush very quickly. Somehow I also managed to underwater a cactus once and it literally started deflating. It was hilarious to look at but luckily I was able to bring it back with a good watering. Cacti are great and in my experience pretty fast growers as well given the right care!

I can confirm this, don’t water straight away, if you can avoid having the soil in contact with the flesh of the cactus this is a good way to prevent rot, this can be done by putting a 1cm layer of grit on the top of the soil

I was bitten by cacti back in the early 1970s when still in high school. Most of the plants I have now were newly purchased last year. Have gotten through the winter with only one casualty (a Dykia). I have several starting to flower now and others coming out of winter dormancy. I live in Wisconsin USA near lake Michigan. Happy growing !!!

i really love cacti, but really only for their aesthetic. They aren't super rewarding since they take soooo long to grow. Also you dont have to do muchj to care for them, which i guess for a plant helicopter parent that gets boring lol. Overwatering on the other hand is a quick way to kill them.

Next hoya or the non vegan carniverous plants ? Next to aroids and succulents (i love lithops ) those are ones I am getting into as well. I dont like the grafted look though, would it work if you burried the bottom part totally? Also you wouldnt be able to see if the grafted one was poached because the roots are cut of. I need a loads bigger house ;)

Good question, re: buried the root stock. I think I've heard people saying eventually if you leave the scion on the top for long enough it'll just grow all over it / push out pups that surround it or you end up just raising the soil level. It'd be interesting to see what on earth goes on root wise if that happens. Like do roots just pop out of all the areoles (equivalent to nodes in aroids) on the cacti? The grafted plants definitely look dumb lol but I guess it's a means to an end.

Hehe about that. I took everything out recently as it was overrun with algae. Potted everything up or put it into prop boxes, and bleached the crap out of the system to hopefully start fresh with no algae soon. Will try to update on things soon, but they're all going well once out.

@Pete vs Plants I started out with temperate trees and garden plants. I was an avid naturalist and birder. Had a few of the basic houseplants, but didn't really get much into them, Christmas cactus, spiderplant..that's about it. Did my horticulture studies and it at least opened my eyes but, I still preferred trees and such . Worked in garden centres and ground crew for an arborist. I didn't really know how to approach houseplants because they were all assorted tropicals or cacti. 8 years ago, I moved to the Northwest Territories, but just before I did, I got the cactus bug with some Rhipsalis, an opuntia and some aloe. My plant addiction had started. Then I moved and had nothing for a bit. I overwintered a few peppers for the fun of it. Chilies got me wanting houseplants again, so I started watching planttubers and thought about getting some cacti. Desert Plants of Avalon and Cactus Caffine were my definite favorites and showed me the basics. Started ordering seeds from ebay and online. Carnivorous plants came in there too and that's how I got hooked on aroids. I wanted something other than a green pothos, a rhipsalis and Thanksgiving Cactus. Now 3 years in, I've got about 150 plants, 37 cacti and succulents, 19 carnivorous ( pinguicula and nepenthes) ll, 17 Hoyas and the rest are tropicals

Wow what an amazing journey. It's always interesting to hear how others got into their plants. Lol to be honest, the first thing to hook me was something you're not allowed to grow (or smoke) in most of Australia... After I started growing my own supply I kind of lost interest in smoking and just wanted to grow out the different types of plants and watch them flower. Fast forward a bit and I got the house plant and now cactus and succulent bug lol

You're going to have fun with cacti and succulents, especially when you start to grow some from seed. I have a more of a scientific appreciation to my collection as well. I was/still am that little science geek, the natural world still fascinates me in my 40s. I actually got hooked into some aussie natives for a bit. I got curious about the cold hardy gums and bottlebrushes and just how cold hardy are they during lockdown, lol. Lol, forgot about my little stint running the town indoor garden for a season to try to bring some fresh produce options for the community. Now it's just little plots Great thing about being Canadian, it's legal here *puff puff pass*, lmao
