This brings back memories. I was a rougher for 14 years. I'm surprised you didn't go LVL on the garage header. Here in the north we put all we can on all walls before we raise them. When raising walls we would put a pull brace just in case it would get cut by the wind or a guy over pushed too far. We also would put the facia on before we would plywood. This would allow a good starting point for the first sheet. Code here is that have to flash the windows too. Sometimes I miss it but most of the time I don't cause I do remodeling now which usually inside. 12 pitches are brutal, no fun. Be blessed my friend

Just found your channel, and I’ve enjoyed every video I’ve watched so far (6). I’ve been a roofer for 20 yrs and I’ve taken on some carpentry projects over the years but nothing like this. Your explanations, details, showings and skills are giving me a little more confidence in a project like this. Near future plans are to buy 5-10 acres and build a live in garage. Fingers crossed

I like the idea of "I" joists and whoever came up with the idea because it's simple technology, but yet it's far more stronger than a traditional 2*10 or 12 floor/ceiling joist. I'm not sure when they came out, but I would say 25 ish years ago because I was in the basement of a house that was built in the late 90s and had "I" joists. Pretty cool! 👍

Dear Ken, Im one of the proud subscriber of your channel and `i enjoy every video `i watched so far. `thanks for making this happen. My heart was pounding when you were on that ladder and I know you probably did this million times but for light hearted subscribers like me try to use some safety ropes. And teach us how to use it. I do have a request, could you please do few detailed/separate video on the tiny detailing we miss in the videos like ... 1:10 how do you mount the frames or attach it to the cement slab ( do you have pre installed bolt from the slab, just nail it!!! ... How does it withstand the entire weight!! ... 3:33 The i Beams, how do you make it, comparison with the plank vs plywood on these beams.... 19:00 how did you installed the last sheet!!! That ladder attachment was good details on that would also help ... 26:51 how/what did u do with this last piece + the plastic sheet ( i Guess you attached from inside but good to know from you). I know few of the views think these question are silly but as you know 99% of the viewer are not an experienced builder and the core purpose of this video is to share knowledge.... Happy holidays and Love from India ....

Ken, I am a big fan of you videos. I just watched this one the other day and I have a question. On the gable ends you put up the siding boards before you stood them up. Then later you started putting the siding from the bottom of the first floor. You said you did a calculation so the reveal would be the same once you got to the bottom of the gable ends. What in the world is that calculation? Just curious. Thanks

Ken your piano hinge nailing on the end walls is keeping me up at night. How does that work? Those nails have to come out because when the wall goes up they should get bend.... right??
@kenskarpentry

The nail comes through the bottom edge of the plate directly into the chalkline. That way it makes an excellent pivot point and when you tip the wall up the bottom plate sits flat on the floor

This is starting to become some type of addiction. Still watching in Beaver Dam Wisconsin. Give some more credit to your hired man. Wonderful to watch two people work with a little conversation because they know what the other one is thinking. 👍

Folks might say I am nuts for watching the same 24 x 24 or 28 x 28 being built in video after video, but I usually always see something new in each video. Once those wood i-beam things (I forgot the name of them, LVL?) go up, it gives Ken's a whole, new platform to work from.

I learn so much from watching the vids. The first time I put in a garage door opener, I untensioned the springs and then wondered why the door didn't go up. LOL.

Some scaffolding would be really handy...I used some for my house,made a work station on it and rarely had to come down for all of my siding etc.

Great videos. Im building my own garage this summer, and im gonna model it after this design, how do you know exactly the birdsmouth measurements and the cuts for soffit and fascia? Is there not any deflection in the walls? Any help would greatly aprreiciated. Great videos keeps them coming

Thanks I usually lay it out on the ground and make a template.
Years ago I used to be on a framing crew and was wondering : Do you find yourself using more nails with an air gun?
Hi Ken, ever have any call backs from roofing screws loosening up in the sob from wind uplift. I have seen that enough that I don't trust screws into osb anymore ☹

Very impressive. Particularly with the clapboards matching up on the gable ends, precision! Will the addition receive a coat of sealant once the weather is warm enough?

Nice Clean, well organized work. Exactly how I frame. Only difference is we have to use Pl glue and screws for our subfloor install by code. All regions are different in what they require. What are your thoughts on using screws instead of nails for subfloors?
@kenskarpentry
3 жыл бұрын
We always glue and screw if it’s living space
ken...what is your process for layout of clapboard? How do you ensure that spacing will be correct (equal) since gable is sided before standing it up on the plate?
@kenskarpentry
4 жыл бұрын
We space them 4” so it’s fairly easy to do the math
Ken, I don't understand how the door from the existing house ties into the garage and stairs. The video cover's it for a second. I would love to see a video or pics of that finished area of how the stairs and existing house looks.

Very interesting and learned a good bit. I was wondering why use OSB for sheathing and not for flooring?
@kenskarpentry
3 жыл бұрын
The plywood is stronger for the floor
Ken, do paint the nail heads on the siding. Assume they are galvanized. Siding was stained, what procedure do you use. Good video, thanks
@kenskarpentry
4 жыл бұрын
Yes definitely galvanized.
wow, nice work. what kind of nails do you use on the clapboards? galvanized? stainless? ring shank? length? thanks!!
@kenskarpentry
3 жыл бұрын
Galvanized 2” ring shank
I was really wanting to see the connection to the house and the area by the door. Oh well.
Can you tell what the knee wall is for apart from storage. Is it a part of the supports structure as well?
@kenskarpentry
4 жыл бұрын
The knee wall shortens the span length thus making the rafter that much stronger
Thanks
Good work, Ken! How long does the construction take? Thanks!

Great videos! I'm about to find a contractor for a 24' x 24' music building in my backyard in Nashville. What is the cost for cinder block vs normal framing? I need to soundproof as much as possible. Thanks
@kenskarpentry
4 жыл бұрын
Cibdernlock would soundproof pretty well
Wy you do'nt use inexpensive wire mesh in place of expensive rebar ? For shure rebar is stronger . Also you can laydown 2" styrofoam SM under the concrete flor for isolate the slab protecting from soil mouvement and frost , after all great job nice built , i enjoy watching you talentfull peoples
@kenskarpentry
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I’ve never worked with wire mesh but I know a lot of people do. For me using the rebar is a big selling point to the customer so that’s why I’ve been using it.
Ken your piano hinge nailing on the end walls is keeping me up at night. How does that work? Those nails have to come out because when the wall goes up they should get bend.... right??
@kenskarpentry
3 жыл бұрын
The nail comes through the bottom edge of the plate directly into the chalkline. That way it makes an excellent pivot point and when you tip the wall up the bottom plate sits flat on the floor
Hi, just like to say I love your videos. I just have a question. Why do you never finish the inside or install insulation. Keep them coming..
