Having Abasov in the later Rounds (R5 and R12) was everything as he pushed for wins; meanwhile, the top dogs didn't take risks because they face Abasov in earlier Rounds. Magnus was correct almost entirely! All candidates that Magnus vouched for ended up in position 2, all of them. Ghukesh, though, had something others did not during this tournament -- he was very calm and focused all time. He was not necessarily playing best chess of them all, no. But he managed to be relaxed and calm, which in long tournaments matters the most.

@@subhanshukumarpalei Magnus was judging from the perspective of achieved experience and performance prior to Candidates. All favourites he mentioned ended up on spot no. 2 (Ian, Hikaru, Fabi). However, Ghukesh's victory proves Magnus right; Ghukesh is very young, and young players are unpredictable; one tournament they may be great, the other nothing. I'm really happy for Ghukesh, but I'm also very worried about him too, because it seems, young GMs are coming in hordes. But only persistency over a LONG number of years will make them good players. However, I think times of Kasparov, Anand, etc. or players with more than 30 years of professional career, is now gone. Perhaps Fabi, Hikaru, Magnus etc. are the last ones that will have a professional chess career of some 15 years. Ghukesh and his generation of 17-19 yos, if they stay for 5-6 years now, they will be extremely lucky! He must seize the day, and take his lucky chance, or in two years he will face GMs as young or younger than him, who have nothing to lose.

Magnus made an educated guess based on his knowledge of each player. Infact, nobody thought Gukesh would win before the candidates started and even in the final moments Gukesh himself didn't really believe it. It is a huge surprise, and everyone is very impressed by his ability to play solid chess under so much pressure but let's not pretend like he had this made from the get-go. This is a cheery on the cake as far as Gukesh is concerned because former world champion Magnus predicated that Gukesh will perform very badly and his place will at the bottom ladder. May be this observation of Magnus may be helped Gukesh to prove him wrong. Gukesh is a worthy champion materials. Proud for all indians.

KZread comment section is worse than the peanut gallery. Magnus actually predicted his strengths here correctly, “a couple of good wins” I think he said, question was, could Gukesh minimize losses? His past argued to Magnus no, well that he did, bravo. And some chips fell his way.

I was told awhile ago that Gukesh would do well. I did not think the person was lying to me. It is by now some comment on the internet somewhere. At first I thought it might be Arjun yet Gukesh surprised us all. I was not that surprised since I kept an open mind. I was thinking him or Ian.

For me, gukesh was always the best among the new generation along with alireza and nodirbek. Because they are attackers. And inspite of being attackers and taking risks, they maintain a very high elo which is not luck. I dont understand why Pragg is hyped. Hes another version of Wesley or Anish who play solid and are too afraid to attack until its absolutely perfect time to.

If magnus is not able to play 5-6 hour tournament daily then he is lost even before playing. No if's and but's. This classical tournament doesn't mean only playing , it means surviving those tiresome daily 5+ hour match which magnus can't handle so clearly he lost even before playing. But yes in shorter time formate magnus is the best. I have seen magnus mostly draws classical and wins tie breaker in smaller time formate so for now magnus is not the best classical player.
