    The SAMPSON radar on the T45 destroyers can track targets out to 250 miles (unclassified) including targets in space, and can track hundreds of targets at once whilst simultaneously engaging with the Sea Viper system using ASTER 15 and ASTER 30 missiles. They're set to be upgraded to support CAMM too, allowing for even more missiles to be carried. It also has a second, complementary long range radar called the S1850M.

    I believe the calls you hear accompanied by the whistle: "slot back", "dropkick" etc are the NATO reporting names for different Russian aircraft radars that the ship's electronic support measures are detecting. As soon as they detect those coming from a radar contact, they know they're dealing with a military aircraft, as well as the type of aircraft. Slot back, for example, is a MiG-29's radar, and dropkick is a Su-24's. So they probably have a good idea who they're dealing with before they even analyse their flight paths.

    not a good situation a ship is basically sitting duck with ocean waiting to swallow it and aircraft flying at different altitudes at subsonic and sonic speeds ( from different directions ) armed with hypersonic missiles who knows there may be pilots doing one-way ( no return ) mission a ship may have 2 or 4 guns? missiles that may bring down 3-4 planes how do you engage dozen in clever attack formation? some at 6 feet some at 3000 some at 300 with rehearsed coordinated attack you may send up sailors to engage them with 50 mm weapons means you got to disintegrate targets flying at 1000 km/hr before they hit into the vessel ( meantime other sailors are getting life rafts ready ) you could also call in air support from a sister aircraft carrier ( probably little late )

  • @Bob10009

    @Bob10009

    You obviously have no idea that the ship here was specifically designed to provide air defence for an entire fleet. If it wanted to, Duncan could have shot every one of these aircraft out of the sky before they were even within visual range. It can also target ballistic missiles and as has been proven in Ukraine, Russian hypersonic missiles are no such thing and pretty easy to shoot down.

    Alright, not trying to bash here......because UK make and posses some INCREDIBLE naval assets, BUT......please look into the massive problems in the UK navy right now. ....They dont have enough sailors to man the few ships the have. The US had to put a squadron of US F35s on the HMS Queen Elizabeth for almost a YEAR because they didnt have pilots for their own. Its pretty sad the once most powerful navy in the WORLD now alerts incoming threats they are a NATO vessel to make them think twice instead of saying they are a Sovereign British Vessel., reminding them hey, if u do mess with us the US is coming. Just wow. Increase your military funding!!!! And do NOT say you cant. There is a reason Americans earn less on average for same jobs, do NOT have free health care, and have a LOWER quality of life on avg than most EU, or UK country. Because we spend it on military. If we dont, Europe probably falls......yet many Americans are getting tired of bearing this burden. 2-2.5% GDP thats all we ask......u know MANDATED in the member rules of NATO...........

    As an Irish citizen I would like to extend my thanks and gratitude to the UK Air Force for providing air cover from frequent russian incursions into Irish air space. We have recently had the russian navy conducting manoeuvres off the coast of Ireland. On a couple of occasions the russian navy has held its manoeuvres over underwater information and communication cables. The implied threat of these russian incursions on our air and sea territory is obvious and requires a stern response. Unfortunately Ireland doesn’t have an airforce of its own and the Irish navy is under financed.

    You think the Royal Navy learnt nothing from that? That is exactly the reason the Type 45s were built... "The largest and most powerful Air Defence Destroyer ever built, Type 45 was primarily designed to provide the latest Anti-Air Warfare (AAW) capability protecting national, allied and coalition forces against enemy aircraft and missiles." - BAE Systems. In the Falklands the RN had Type 42 Air Defence destroyers. A single Type 45 can simultaneously track, engage and destroy more targets than five Type 42 destroyers operating together. (It can launch 48 leading edge missiles at targets _simultaneously_ before reloading.)
