Second hand scooters break down. A rented one "never" breaks down. If there is a problem with your rented scooter, you get another one. There is no "down time" while the scooter you own is being repaired. You are not responsible for repairs or maintenance. Avoiding these head aches is worth the price of renting a scooter.

Even induction stoves are better than the electric cooker.Your bum gun is choked. Poke it’s pores with a safety pin or needle. Buy an ordinary cleaning acid bottle and clean your toilet appliances and washing sinks (ceramic )with a little acid on a brush. You can employ a char-woman to clean your utensils and sweep the floor. But don’t leave any valuables or cash outside.

Yes, 14800$ US is too much indeed. I think 167$ US (12000 INR) would be a fair deal. As for the scooter and AC, it's a total rip offs. You can get an average scooter (like shown here) or even better in 12k-20k price range and also for the used AC for 300$ US (24000 INR) is a bit too much considering there are new ones available from (1999 INR) onwards. Probably some commisioners involved here and there. The best thing about India for a normal foreigners is that a 400-500$ US can get them to a luxurious lifestyle here in North East of India or in the east (West bengal) where everything is 10-25% cheaper compared to the south or North even on the same regional context. NE rural areas are more affordable/cheaper than Northern/southern rural areas and same goes for the urban areas aswell. All in all India is one of the fastest growing nation and also most affordable and budget friendly country when it comes to Purchasing Power Parity despite the GDP per capita or even to an extend and consider nominal GDP it's still very affordable to live and settle. Just for example a loaf of bread here cost 20-50 rupees while in the US or the EU or UK it cost 5$, 4€ and 5£ respectively. 150 rupees equivalent of 2$ can get you a full meal while western countries full meal ranges from 10$-200$ even for a roadside vendor on cart or a normal restaurant.

I´m from Europe and wanna live in India. Can you give me advice how to do it without having to renew visa every three months to Sri Lanka or Nepal?

How did you decide to settle in this particular area? I would want a non touristy area, but i am not opposed to Pushkar or Dharamshala or Jaisalmer or Kerala...

I'm from South Western State of Goa but I guess if u want to enjoy hilly areas u should do some research on northern states like uttrakhand. Basically you should decide on the factors like cost of living ( which is very cheap in india) health facilities etc. Try to read the reviews of the area's you mentioned on Quora or some other websites. Kerela ,Delhi, Goa and many other places have good health facilities. Some places in rural areas of Maharashtra like ganpatipule and Mahabaleshwar r also good. If you like South of india then Kerela will be a good choice but you too should continue your research

As an Indian living in Delhi (have lived in US for 15 yrs) you can live here for the same price in a decent locality. As in $300 per month - you will find a 2-3 bedroom easily. I know because we rented our house in a good locality for that amount. But if you are looking for a beautiful experience Ben knows better!

at 2:03, monthly calling + data plan (1.5 gbs) should be corrected to - one month unlimited calls within India + 1.5 GB per day - cost INR 233. this is the usual offer from most service providers all over india. equivalent call + data plan in US could be 30 to 50 times costlier. you could as well have added 'Thank you India' there.

Hey Eddy, if I were you I'd start with a trip to see where you like in India. And if you search "high yield savings account" you should find an account for your money with a decent interest rate. If you don't plan on spending it then an Index fund in the stock market is where I would put my money but please do your research as that is just what I would do and I'm not a certified financial advisor :)

If you put 50000 Canadian dollar in a Flexible Fix deposit, you will get 7 percent in India. Which is 3500 Canadian dollars year which is roughly 300 cad per month which is 16,000 inr . You can easily rent a house for entire month in that.

Good info Ben. Your rental place looks very nice with garden and trees and terrace and the view of the mountains. About the cost of living - If someone still makes income in US dollars and spends in Indian INR then it is definitely very attractive. But making income in INR and spending in INR is a different story. Also the cost of living, even the vegetables and groceries cost more if you live in metro cities like Bangalote or Chennai compared to smaller towns and villages. When travel from usa and visit my brother's family in Bangalore , I can see everything is priced equivalent to USD coverted to INR, which shocks me. Also what do you think of the gas price compared what we pay here in the USA ? That is another shocker to me when I visit India.
