I remember we were doing some vocal takes at this studio in Los Angeles and I walked into the dimly lit control room and Dave of Los Lobos was sitting there eating raw jalapenos, just listening back at their vocals harmonies mix (don't recall the song). Anyways, your vocal reminds me of that session.

I use a pair of very rare 60s EV RE-15 mics I bought in the 80s in great condition and the clarity and warmth is unreal plus rejects most noise etc. nothing much beats it IMHO. Used to be Elvis's favorite mic also great on acoustic instruments, has a very honest natural sound. A friend who is a pro Elvis impersonator wanted to pay me good money for it but I won't sell it, it's one of those rare gems now !

Ribbons have really started to grow on me lately, and to me the RB500 sounds absolutely the best in this and the female comparison! The sound is so smooth and buttery, and focuses on the basis of the voice rather than silly little details. I mean I don't want a super-duper overly accurate representation of what's going on in the singers mouth, like most of the condensers give you. From that distance the ribbon really shines, since there's not that much proximity effect, and if you want, you can still boost the highs, which will maintain silky nevertheless. Ribbons can take pretty heavy EQing and still sound great.

The T.Bone SC1100 just compared it to the U87 and be amazed! Yesterday, out of curiosity I compared the SC-1100 with the Slate digital VMS ML1. The T.Bone sounded full, warm, with silky smooth highs and Captured all nuances. The slate sounded thinner!!!! The t.bone needed less gain, resulting in a very low self noise from the mic. Both mics are great but the t.bone won hands down!!! I also tested it using the Slate mic with the Virtual Mix Rack using the Neumann U-47 as well as the Telefunken ELA M 251E models, while I connected the t.bone to my external Pultec EQP and LA2A clones, now that's where I was blown away! I have not used the t.bone since I bought it because I had a good experience with t.bone mics since 2002, but now I am reconsidering things!!! The t.bone also has three polar patterns vs one with the Slate mic. Previously owned Neumann TLM 49 as Neumann claimed that to be their "Vocal Mic" but sold it because the Slate could give me good results. Still the TLM-49 was an awesome classy sounding mic!

It's crazy how price doesn't really matter that much and it's about finding the right mic for you. I was working in a studio where the engineer set up his U87, and I was just struggling. It sounded so flat, there was nothing coming back to me in my headphones like the crispier response I get from my home recorded demos on my AT2020. My home demos cut through the mix of the music I write. Working in someone else's studio, my vocals were just buried in the mix and it was depressing. I was asking him to add reverb, or a little gain to distort it, anything to try to replicate what I had going on at home. Then he swapped his U87 out for his much cheaper TLM102. It was an instantaneous, THIS IS IT! Even before I started singing, just speaking to my bandmates and him in the booth, my voice sounded the way I wanted it to - like what I was used to with my AT2020 but a little better. Anyway, I even prefer the sound of my voice through a cheap SM58 over that U87, which is supposed to be far superior. Just get the right tool for the right job. I'm a baritone and sometimes emphasizing the higher mids is what pushes me through a mix, so those tones can be described as "thinner" and not as full or rich, but it's what works for me.

  • @garyharrison8891

    @garyharrison8891

QueeferSutherland his U87 must need work. The TLzM102 is engineered to be a flatter response mic, sounding a little dark, for a more natural sound. U87 are a bit hyped in the upper mids, and highs.

with background music turned on via logic (synth-pad in the right key...had to change key some times ..he is singing in different keys) and listening on genelec studio monitors the sontronics sigma and the sennheiser d-441 are miles above the rest. maybe this can give a little impression how each mic behaves in a "musical" context/arrangement. all the higher-end condensers tlm103, m147, u87 and Peluso 2247 sound thin . probably they won't after processing ..I have had a tlm103 and I own a m147. They definitely don't sound thin . but this is what I hear just listening to the raw sound.

The U87ai and M147 win this one... The Peluso has very thin bass and too much top-end, even the T.bone sc1100 sounds much better - now that's a great value mic. Really beware of the Peluso stuff as it's full of chinese electronics, poor choice caps like a Wima FKS for the input, and poor QC on the capsules, chinese made PSU (Alctron) - you can find a dedicated thread on groupdiy which explains all the chinese stuff you buy for that premium price :) And of course it sounds nothing like the ELA M251 which he tries to emulate.

A really good singing mic is one that renders dynamics smoothly across the whole frequency range, as if it had some subtle inbuilt compressor, and this inspires the singer to sing more perfectly consciously or unconsciously. I think the Neumanns have got this untold musical ability with their mics. I could see this singer was himself impressed with the TLM103, then going to the M-147 tube it was so vintage smooth and then to the U-87 which didn't seem to care if he was loud and rendered it effortlessly with no harshness. Can't go wrong with a Neumann which is built for everything from voice to instruments. The Sontronics sounded good and stood out and the others all had their own signatures, some quite predictably uninspiriing. But with the Neumanns I can tell that you would not be wasting time trying to EQ and process it .. all it would likely need is some context related processing without having to worry about trying to correct the mic, which is a huge advantage.

Really depends on what you use it for, for pop it works great for insance, but for smoother/quiet performances like jazz as one example, the U87 especially, sounds like someone almost overcompressed the vocals already, it's just too aggressive.

thx for doing this comparison! Shure SM7B & Sennheiser MD 441in the low-price area are really nice. Both are a bit "dark" and lack resolution, but can fit well to rocktype music and can handle eq without getting to harsh (what I think can get problematic with some of the other cheaper mics). The Body of the TLM 103 is not as nice as with the M147 and other LCDs in the upper price range in this comparison. The M147 is a mic... well, I really don´t find it a very good one for this price. Owned it for some years, but always had some mics that fitted better for a particular job and instrument/vox. But it has solid and tight body (lowend and midrange). Thats something I like it for. U87 is really nice, didn´t expect something else. Has everything one needs, good midrange, nice topend, a real alrounder. Have no experience with Peluso mics, but I don´t really like this particular one. Your room and voice could work with many mics from this comparison. The further processing while mixing will show even more which mic holds its quality and which fall apart. If you would have the time to compare them roughmixed into the track, that would be really really interesting. :) I am going to make a similar shootout with some heavy hitters (Neumann M149, Tele U47, Tele Ela M 251, AKG 414 etc) in the next months... feel free to have a look on my channel at this time, might be interesting for you. cheers!

Many of the mics would only be used for voice in a live setting. All the Neumann mics really stood out. Especially the M147. I’m not a fan of the TLM103 but even that sounded better than the lower end competitors. The Peluso was nice too. Once you get up in the €1000+ range, everything should be “good”. It becomes more about flavors. The U87 is also nice. Those are high end items though. Good for recording studios and professional voice actors. For most musicians with a home studio, €2000 is an obscene expense. There are excellent microphones in the sub €500 range, just not shone here. Ah, if money were no object…

The T sound is so sibilent on tlm 103, the u87 ai is like a tlm 103 without the sibilens and better sound quality, the shure sm58 sound more open and clean than shure sm7b, the sm7b sounded very muddy.

Neumann M147 all the way! and the Sonotronics a surprising close 2nd because it had that nice 1960’s AM radio sound. The U87ai sounded too modern and airy, lacking depth and character. The TLM103 sounded too thin and sibilant. The M147 sounded fuller and I feel it balanced the warm and the bright evenly, just like it’s beautifully symmetrical frequency response curve.

I get the idea of short samples to compare the sound whilst it’s fresh in your mind, but an audio excerpt with no esses? Control of sibilance is literally one of the very top priorities of a vocal microphone, come on!

I preferred the SM7B super smooth, the U87 would probably sit in the mix. I didn’t like the thin sound of the 441, i thought the AKG held its own.

lefterhsk1 not on my studio monitors, I thought the 441 had nice presence in the top end, lacked lower end, especially in the low midrange area, edit: It's sounds very midrange heavy, the 421 was very thin, the 441was mid range heavy and lacking lower mids and lows.

Why was he singing in different keys, was he not listening to the track in his headphones? Is he a singer with the right tone but has to be auto-tuned in recording? This video just presents too many questions

Great video and voice. AKG C3000B was more musical to my ears. $119 free shipping ebay in USA. Also a Studio Projects C1 would have been interesting in this comparison.

This guy uses an AKG3000B exclusively...says it was his first mic and he tried a bunch of others before just sticking with what he had. Cheap old school pre too. Said he uses the original presonus Bluetubes that were handmade in the USA. kzread.info/dash/bejne/d4ml0JeaZ8fZe7A.html
