Recording Vocals Masterclass: Marcel van Limbeek reveals his favourite mics for recording vocals.
Recording Vocals Masterclass: Marcel van Limbeek reveals his favourite mics for recording vocals.
In Part One of this superb studio engineering masterclass, Marcel starts off with a really deep look at his five favourite mics - and what might influence his choice. He discusses the type of voice, why you want to keep the lead vocal reflection-free in the recording process, unnatural EQ effect from comb filtering, minimising ambient reverb and which way to position the microphone in the room.
Marcel’s personal favourites are: Shure SM58, Neumann U87, Sony C37A (Frank Sinatra’s favourite!), Neumann U67 and the Schoeps Colette with MK4 capsule.
This is an information-heavy masterclass. Enjoy!

im a full-time engineer and i still learned some things from this. wow thanks!
I usually don't comment on videos but this one is amazing. I've seen numerous videos on youtube but this one explains the whole microphone thing in a detail what is exceptional. I've learnt a lot now and I understand my mics much better. Thank you for the video!
Chapeau! I would like to compliment you with this clear explanation of various types of microphones in this video. I have done many microphone measurements when I worked at PolyGram. I did this this for my collegues at DG, Philips and DECCA at the time. Therefore I am glad to see this truthful presentation on KZread.
The best lesson on microphones, their differences and application ever!!
Excellent video, finally someone explained the difference in mics in a way you can actually comprehend. Thanks much.
Such a very clever and articulate gentleman who really knows his subject. Many thanks.
Surprisingly great video! No BS, no pseudoscience, no snake-oil; just a great and informative video with correct information.

Wow ! That was a GREAT video ! Very informative for a newbie at recording. The ability to explain something complex in "lay person's" terminology is not easy, but Marcel did so, effortlessly ! Many thanks for that very useful lesson !

Thank you very informative
I cannot believe, I was here for looking good podcast mics. Instead what I got is important lectures I will remember for life. Great.
Your Sony C37 elicits profound Gear Envy. Love the mic. Does something v special to vocals. Like the U 87 it sounds great on 9 out 10 singers
Love the SM58

@@Triumphinchrist1 Never tried it tbh
He should have worked at SAE when I was there. I never noticed any as knowledgeable as this man regarding microphones...
Ik moet deze informatie nodig. Erg goed!
What mic should I buy? I am a classical singer (tenor) and needs the mic to be a few meters away
One word: educational
Now, someone that knows.
Dear Marcel, Great explanation, hats off. What about SM57, even though it is predominantly an instrument microphone, whats your take on vocals !

Its one of the best for vocals. Better than the SM58. Prefer it over my U87

Lol... that's exactly what I started saying
Question? Do you think having a Grace 101 mic pre overkill if I get the Apollo Twin With Avalon Plug-ins, 610 B plugins etc?
Nice videos, I got a quick question I'd appreciate you answered. I currently got a soundproofed booth, similar to yours. I got a Zoom S2T and a Rode NT1A I mostly do voiceovers and want to offer vocal recording to music artists. Debating between these 4 mics, I want a significant overall better quality with the least noise floor and all without breaking the bank. Mics: Shure SM7B, EV E320, EV E20, CAD 100S, NEUMAN 102 I know I need to get a fethead if I get a dynamic and I dont mind if they offer great quality and best bang for your buck I was just suggested to get the Tascam UH-7000, seems very good. I could get the EV E320, FETHEAD and this Tascam UH-7000 .... or any of the other mics mentioned or I could get a Neuman 102 and a cheap Interface like the Focusrite 2i2 or maybe even just use my Zoom s2t or Zoom h5 What would you do? Even though I "can" get the Neuman 102, it'd be through a loan so will only do it if its far better than all the other ones and if mentioning it to my clients will help in charging more than if I had a mic they probably own themselves I can get the Neuman in Europe for about 180$ cheaper I really like the CAD 100S and Tascam 7000 combo.... Looking forward to your reply! Thanks!
I like.
