16 COOLER SHOWDOWN! | Best Coolers For Camping, Hunting and The Money

Спорт

If you are looking for the best cooler for camping, the best hunting cooler, or the best coolers for the money, you've come to the right place. We put together an extensive cooler review testing 16 premium coolers to find the best hunting coolers, best camping coolers, best fishing coolers, and coolers that offer the best thermal retention. However, we put the most emphasis on thermal retention, because, let's face it.
Whether you are looking for the best hunting cooler, best cooler for camping, best cooler for fishing, of the best cooler for thermal retention, you buy a cooler to keep things cold. We didn't just test these coolers for how long they kept ice in them, but we tested every cooler in the same conditions, and set out to find which coolers kept an internal air temperature under the 40 degree mark (for safe meat storage), as well as holding internal air temperatures below 50 degrees, and finally how long each cooler lasted before all the ice melted.
Additionally, we measured the actual internal liquid volume of each and every cooler, to see if they were as big as advertised. While the best camping cooler may be a size range around 75-80 quarts, we found the best hunting coolers to be of the larger variety to store your wild game and make sure your meat doesn't spoil.
No cooler was given special treatment, and this process of finding the best cooler for camping, hunting, fishing, and the money all starts with keeping things cold. We tracked and charted TONS of data points to find the best coolers in a bunch of categories, and the results and extensive details are in this review article over on the website: backwoodspursuit.com/best-coo....
In this cooler review, we tested 16 of the best coolers money can buy, which included Yeti Coolers, Grizzly Coolers, Bison Coolers, Blue Coolers, RTIC Coolers, Orion Coolers, Pelican Coolers, Rugged Road Outdoors Coolers, ORCA Coolers.

    @breakingeighty for sure! Certainly don't win them all LOL. Depending on how many people are going, that Pelican 80qt was awesome...a bit bulky but the top performer. The YETI performed awesome as well, and if you want a more budget friendly option, the Blue and RTIC were both fantastic. Overall, my favorite were the Bison coolers though, and they are now certified bear resistant as well (they weren't when we did thw testing). I also read the related article. Wow, lots of effort and good data. Some lack of controls and potential measurement inaccuracies, but this isn't a laboratory. Good enough for backyard work. As expected, among a cohort of similarly constructed coolers with similar insulation thickness, larger coolers filled with a larger volume of ice tend to maintain temperature longer. No surprise there. However, your review did result in several significant surprises and some important points as it relates to the key outlier which really has me scratching my head...namely... The extremely odd " > 40 degree " air temperature reading of the Orion 65, esp. in relation to the Yeti "75" which is in fact a true "75". I own a number of thermometers including two Garmin Bluetooth enabled devices. The difference between recorded temperatures among the Garmin's can be a couple of degrees. I have tested a range of other (non-blue tooth) thermometers for accuracy in boiling water and ice water and have found considerable variation. Put another way, absent the anomalous >40 air temp. reading, it appears to me that the Orion performed the best among similar sized coolers and essentially matched the much larger Yeti "75" especially in consideration of the size diff. (which is quite an accomplishment). No, I don't have a dog in the fight. I don't own a Yeti or an Orion. I do own a couple of Canyon Coolers. But I AM in the market for a cooler in the 55 - 80 range. My theories for the cause of the anomaly, listed from most likely to less likely include: 1) The Orion had a bad air seal (far and away the most likely) 2) Variations between thermometers. Ideally they should have been calibrated at 40 and 50 degrees in advance. Yeah, I know, you sure don't need more work! 3) Measurement location / environment. Example, if the wood block was wet then more conuctive heat loss could flow through to the thermometer. If one wood block was further away from the ice, it could measure a warmer temp. etc. But the difference was HUGE so vertical location "probably" doesn't explain. Soaking of the wood might.. 4) Location within the tent. I'm fairly certain that areas within the tent had significantly different microclimates. If one cooler was in a corner of the tent, and esp. if that corner was South facing, and if the cooler touched the outer fabric, then I would judge that cooler to likely be exposed to more heat than a cooler centrally located. (it looked to me like some cooler touched the walls and the Orion appeared to be in a corner). Also, north facing vs. South facing (the top of the tent likely is letting some focused solar radiation through. Also, note that online resources list the Yeti 75 as having an actual capacity of almost exactly 75 qts (based on reference to Yeti's owners manual) - yup, one of the few Yeti coolers that are not smaller than advertised. Thus, the Yeti is in a much larger size class vs. the Orion (even based on the volume measurement by BP) and yet the Orion mostly kept up with it.

    Hey there, Jim! Thank for the insight and taking the time to watch and read the reviews! Yeah, we don't have a lab, unfortunately, so did our best to build in various cross check points for the data, but it certainly wasn't perfect. I'm sure there was some variation in thermometers, and that's why we didn't remove a cooler from the test until it failed to hold the temperature below the given mark for at 2 checks in a row. It is certainly is possible that there was a bad seal on that Orion as that would explain it's surprising performance. If that was the case, though, that would be disappointing that a cooler passed QC that way. We did our best to place the wood block in the same place on every cooler (in the center). All of the wood blocks were dry to start the test, but obviously became increasingly damp and/or wet as the test went along and the ice melted. Not perfect, but it seemed to provide a fairly consistent position for the thermometers. As for the location in the tent, what we found interesting was that the best performing coolers were scattered all around the tent. There didn't seem to be a pattern in that regard, and we generally tried to keep the coolers in each category in the same area of the tent, the best we could given the size constraints.Interestingly, the top performers in the 75qt category were on the south facing side of the tent, and also on the outer edge. The Orion was on the north facing side of the tent. At any rate, thank you for the insight and taking the time to comment!

    Yeah, those Blue Coolers did great! I could definitely see how the white coolers would do better than dark coolers if the sun is hitting them at all. Since we did this test inside the tent with none of them getting direct sunlight, I imagine the color shouldn't have affected any thing for this test. Thanks for watching!

    Friggin awesome testing but the math aijt adding up here imo based off other tests ive seen and the disparity with at least the two pelicans. Did u check tonsee if the coolers in the middle areas of the tent faired better then the ones in the middle? I feel like being on the edge of the tent warning up from sunlight would be a big deal..

  • @BackwoodsPursuit

    @BackwoodsPursuit

    11 ай бұрын

    Hey there! Thank you very much! We certainly put a lot into setting up the test to be as fair as possible across the board. The placement in the tent didn't seem to have any noticeable effect on the results as the best performers were scattered all over the tent in their placement. The Bison and Grizzly were in the middle, the Pelican 80 and YETI 75(tied for the top spot in their respective size category) were on different sides of the tent. There was no correlation that we could find relative to the placement in the tent, but the size of the cooler obviously made a big difference. All the coolers were pre-chilled overnight as well. We were certainly puzzled at how the Bison 125 was the best overall and best in its size class, but the Bison 75 was more mid pack in its respective size category...same with the Pelican 80 and Pelican 65. All to say, the canvas tent we used has a white top to it which let in plenty of light, but defused the light so the temperature was very even throughout the tent. One side note....we focused on getting the internal AIR temperature, not simply how long ice lasted(which is far more important IMO for meat storage), so that might be a big part of the different results we received vs some of the other ice retention tests out there. Either way, thanks for watching and commenting!

    Hey there! Thanks for the feedback. We did this video as a supplement to and in conjunction with the review article, backwoodspursuit.com/best-coolers-for-camping-hunting/. That article goes into extensively more detail, but wanted to try to keep this video from getting too terribly long. As you can see at the end of this video, though, we broke down the results by size category, as well as an overall top to bottom for those who want any of that information. As for ice, we did a 2:1 rating of ice to water bottles relative to the measured internal volume of each cooler. So, each cooler has the same amount of ice and water relative to their own size (40% ice, 20% water bottles). Hope that helps and thanks for a watching!
