I LOVE St. Augustine. Back when I was in High School (94-98), I was in the American Sign Language club. Every year we would visit the city. We would tour Flagler College, and The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind. (Where Ray Charles went to school.)

Hi Lee, I attended the Saint Augustine film festival this evening, and saw the film, The Immediate Family. The film is wonderful, and, as it was stated, this evening, you all are the soundtrack of my life. I’ve been telling all my friends I recorded with you in 1977. I attended the Jackson Browne concert at the Merriweather Post pavilion, in Columbia, Maryland where much of Jackson’s Running On Empty album was recorded. I was in the audience singing along with you all.

Founded in 1968, the campus comprises 19 acres (77,000 m2), the centerpiece of which is the Ponce de León Hotel, built in 1888 as a luxury hotel. The architects were John Carrere and Thomas Hastings, working for Henry Morrison Flagler, the industrialist, oil magnate and railroad pioneer. It is now listed as a National Historic Landmark. Lawrence Lewis Jr., was the driving force behind Flagler's development. It was his vision to create a small, private liberal arts college on the old hotel grounds. Lewis was Chairman of Flagler's board of trustees for more than 20 years, guiding the college through a reorganization in 1971. He directed millions of dollars through foundations, family and personal funds into new construction, restoration projects, endowment and various other programs to ensure Flager's continued success. Lewis was related to Henry Flagler through his mother, Louise Wise Lewis Francis, who was the niece of Mary Lily Kenan Flagler, who married Henry Flagler in 1901 making him Lewis' great uncle.

The Hotel Ponce de Leon, also known as The Ponce, was a luxury hotel in St. Augustine, Florida, built by millionaire developer and Standard Oil co-founder Henry M. Flagler. Built between 1885-1887, the winter resort opened in January 1888. The hotel was designed in the Spanish Renaissance Revival style as the first major project of the New York architecture firm Carrère & Hastings, which gained world renown for more than 600 projects, including the House and Senate Office Buildings flanking the US Capitol. Their final project was the New York Public Library. The hotel is the first of its kind constructed entirely of poured concrete, using the local coquina stone as aggregate. The hotel is one of the first buildings in the country wired for electricity from the onset, with the power being supplied by DC generators installed by Flagler's friend, Thomas Edison. Since 1968, with the founding of Flagler College, the original building and grounds of the hotel serve as the centerpiece of the campus Flagler College.

First. I want to thank you for all of the videos you post, esp. these latest ones on tour. The architecture is magnificent here and Luke Skywalker Ranch I have heard is as well. I think the reason Disney has all the rough edges “behind the scenes”, is because Walt saw it as quite literally a stage, with a “backstage area”. And as you know “backstage” in a venue looks nothing like the rest of the building. In fact, if you think about it, he even calls his employees “Cast Members”. Love what you do! Bye4now ☮️

I think I may have picked something up at the grocery store or Walgreens back on the 11th during the brief window of time it was warm enough to hike out to restock before extreme cold again. It could be just whatever has been blowing out of the central heat vents the last few days, which is probably moldy. That is, also possible. Even though I turned the heat on, the air coming right through the closed windows is extremely cold breathing wise. Super dry too. Considering the ski mask to go after another gallon of milk.

This was great! I listened through a couple times to catch all of it. 😊 Got me craving the veggies at the end there! 😁 It is tough to be out from under the covers! I got the heat on, but thinking I will need to get earmuffs and boots on, and my top hat in order to make it through the paring of McGregor's garden till it's steamy!

Hi Artemis 😊. Thanks! You too. I am trying to catch up a few days of videos again. Was on the phone fir about thirteen hours a couple of nights ago, and ended up not even sleeping for about a day and half, between that and then everything out from under the covers. I finally got some heat going but trying to tweak my indoor camping situation to handle it better and back off the heat a little. It's just at 66° , but am getting nervous about the next bill, because I don't know the current Henry Hub price since it would have changed most recently for the power tracker plan. Was afraid the pipes might bust if I didn't open the doors enclosing them and turn the heat on. I keep checking every sound that is unusual and feeling and smelling for possible water leaks, every time I get up, about six or eight times through sleeping. Thought I heard the whole sliding door open this morning which freaked me out. Thankful it was only the thin plywood panel I have behind a book shelf as a sort of privacy screen for when I keep the door open in the warmer parts of the year. It occasionally morphs with dew point changes, and the foot of the board will bend more and slide horizontally till it stops at the aluminum sliding glass door runner. I pulled it up back into place sort of the opposite of a garage door. :) I keep wanting to make that a little nicer. Just don't have power tool to do that like I want at the moment. Had one, but my dad thought he could leave a thing in the breezeway one time while visiting and using it a few years back. I always had to lock the car doors and the front door back when I still could drive, every time I was slowly loading unloading anything to and from a vehicle. Learned it the hard way more than once, several years ago. Strangers would be in my apartment when I came back in, looking for cigarettes usually which I didn't have but, kinda nerve wracking. Sometimes mistaking me for someone in their head. Depending in what kind of day they were having and I was having could get sketchy violent. It went okay though, with the strangers. 😉

Off topic, but on topic for many other Sklar videos: I wish (especially in the JT videos) Leland would talk about how he came up with the bass lines he played on various JT songs, and where and whether he contributed ideas or did JT script all the bass lines? Etc.

👋👋. We're still struggling to get the phone to cooperate, but we've managed to get nearly half way through! A few thoughts: 1. It's great that they were able to preserve and repurpose the craftsmanship and artwork 2. It was viscerally painful to think of a drill going into that woodwork so that a hasp could be installed 3. Padlocks cost a lot more than that these days (inflation) 4. Do they have English majors there? Or perhaps they can just spread the word via social media: the story of Flagler's second wife provides a perfect complement to the reading of Jane Eyre (and maybe Jean Rhys' The Wide Sargasso Sea). 4. Good to know that those of us with friends in low places, or maybe just in low places with no friends, get to wear more clothes than the third Mrs. Flagler did in that portrait. 5. When wearing high end pearls to high end places (or others) be SURE to hide them under said clothes. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

😯😯. Mama mia, that's a 4 meal video, minimum! We also have to dig out our audio booster, but should be fun: like a trip to Spain with less flight time and fewer tourists! But let's be real. Sure, the place is named after the guy behind the antitrust laws that gave us the middle class America of the twentieth century (the guy who founded my school made beer). Sure, the climate is great and the place is stunning. But can it confer the kind of knowledge gained at the august institutions of higher learning with which I have been associated or at which I have conferred with like minded peers? If you take your degree there will you know what it is like to be outdoors in a climate where cars have to be plugged in at night and unprotected skin may freeze within a few seconds in the winter? If you get a 105 degree fever there, will you have the opportunity to ponder whether it is malarial before becoming a bit incoherent and rushed off to find medical help? Will you truly know and understand the hazards of black ice (from having gone down hard on the road on your way back from an evening lecture, avoiding the piles of snow everywhere else)? Do they serve ground sheep entrails mixed with oatmeal in the dining hall? Those poor students, deprived of so much important life experience.... Postscript: killjoys!!!! Ok, so I did mention the 105 fever up there (some excuse) but.... After starting to read one of Brooks' wikis I realized that in my haste, and inability to hear most of the video, I missed the irony in the tour guide's opening statement (there are rich progressives in some administrations...). Me went to high school and was learned about the word "antitrust," but I don't think I ever knew this dude by name. Now I have to read the wikis and crunch all of this (once I can hear/watch the video), when I was having such a good time cracking jokes about the comparative comfort of that setting! Killjoys!!!!!

In Canada I think the uninitiated mostly just stay out of the weather by using the impressive network of connecting bridges that they have now.
