Madison boy here. One of my life's most thrilling moments was driving for Genesis during the We Can't Dance tour in '92. They were playing Camp Randall stadium. I worked for a bus company (school buses, coaches, mini-coaches, that sort of thing) and thought we would be moving roadies around or something because we had plain white vans, not limos or anything. We get called to Truax field to pick up people and we are directed to drive out onto the airport ramp next to a huge jet. Turns out WE were carrying the band -- the limos were decoys. We saw the limo drivers at the stadium just hanging around, fans waiting for the band members, but NO ONE hung around the white vans waiting for autographs or anything. I thought it was genius. I got to drive Tony and Mike, I never got to drive Phil. But I was thrilled because Genesis had always been "my" band, my very favorite band, from the very beginning, right up until today at the age of 53. I never got up the courage to say anything to any of the band members except to Tony Banks as I was dropping him off after the show. I said something stupid like "Excellent show Mister Banks!" and he said thank you and walked into the hotel. Daryl talking about Squonk and Los Endos and his audition with Mike. Fills in even more for me, thanks Leland.

I was a huge Gino Vannelli fan in the 70s and saw him live in Ft Worth in 79 for the B2B tour and Daryl was in the band! Then I saw Phil live in 90 in Washington DC and both Daryl and Leland were there! That carousel show was the best concert I’ve ever been to outside of Gino and Genesis. Fantastic. I’ve loved Phil and Genesis since 80 and miss him so much. Love Leland’s interviews!! I even listened to Pete and Rittenour back in the day. We need good music again.

Thank you Daryl Stuermer and Leland Sklar for making this discussion available to be documented and remembered as a historical record. And yes Madison like Berkeley were both known for their Anti-war protest. The University of Wisconsin's Madison campus, Oct. 18, 1967had hundreds of students protesting recruiters from Dow Chemical, the makers of napalm, blocked access to the University's Commerce Building, Madison police removed them by force. “Yes, I received your letter yesterday (About the time the doorknob broke) When you asked how I was doing Was that some kind of joke? All these people that you mention Yes, I know them, they're quite lame I had to rearrange their faces And give them all another name Right now I can't read too good Don't send me no more letters no Not unless you mail them From Desolation Row” Bob Dylan

My first concert ever was The Genesis Abacab Tour at Nassau Coliseum . I was barely a teenager but I must have picked the right concert since its still my favorite show till this day. They even recorded it for Genesis three sides live album. I just started to play drums/piano .. so it was a also a big influence growing up. Daryl was a big part of that tour as on all Genesis tours.

What an absolute TREAT to see and hear Daryl, one of my favorite guitarist/bassists, so much a part of Genesis as a live performer, and, of course, Phil's sound. I would have loved to have heard what he is doing now, but if he is just chilling and living a quiet life in his home town after years and years of playing on the road, I wouldn't blame him a bit.

What a nice surprise! Have been listening to Daryl from the time that I discovered JLP's Enigmatic Ocean as a 10-year-old. His duel with Holdsworth is legendary. Have seen hm live many times since then. I still say that he is one of the industry's most underapprecaited players. His name isn't mentioned as frequently as it should be. The best interviews are conversations, not interrogations. Really enjoyed this one.

Daryl Stuermer is my chief inspiration. He's the reason I picked up guitar and bass to begin with. I had the honor of meetin' Daryl at the Mehaffey Theatre in Tampa, FL. I have Sweetbottom's album and Daryl's brother is an excellent bassist. I never knew Duane Stuermer was a veteran though. My late aunt was also in the Army. She was a nurse in one of the Frontline hospitals durin' Vietnam. I sure do thank Duane for his service. I also just got a Lakland 5 string lined fretless bass. And it sounds cool 😎

Best sales job I ever had I thought I had zero chance of getting so I prepared for a week learning about the company and when I finally got the job my boss said I was the clear choice because I had done my research compared to the others. I only lasted a year, but there's a lesson in there somewhere! 😄

I believe that’s also Daryl doing the Marshall-stack meltdown stuff on “There’s Something Going On” for Frida Lyngstad (Phil Collins wrote, I think, in addition to playing his apocalyptic drums on it) 😁❤️.

My first major concert was at 16 with my 4 brothers. It was summer Duke tour 80', Pine Knob an outdoor amphitheater near Detroit. I owned Enigmatic Oceans album so knew and admired Daryl's work with Ponty. But..... Daryl was missing that concert. He was recovering from a wisdom tooth removal. The others had to cover his parts. I wonder if he might recall this summer event? It's interesting to me how important events in one's life (my first concert) collides with a medical emergency. Jon Luc Ponty's guitarist is missing but saw Genesis many times.
