Most of the time, the hardtack was perfectly fine and fit to eat. Sometimes it got mold or bugs and they had to eat it anyway because they had nothing else. This situation made the headlines, of course, but the vast majority of the time it was well-preserved and palatable -- after proper preparation!

I've read that troops would heat it up in a pan so the worms would crawl out, then scrape them off and eat the hardtack. Decent food and sanitary conditions were not a given. More soldiers died from disease that shot and shell. No doubt the same for most armies of that period.

@bentlybently Yeah, I think it's important to store it in a bag that "breathes". I wish he had told us a little about the history of that particular cracker, like, how did they know for sure it was an ancient original? Had it been an heirloom in the possession of one family all these years? Did they carbon-14 test it?

I always thought the purpose of hardtack was to bust into whatever you were cooking. I've seen Civil War hardtack with notes written on them in ink, used in correspondence between troops.

Hardtack has funny nick names: "tooth dullers," "sheet iron," "worm castles" or "molar breakers". "worm castles"- insect infested hardtack - extra protein if eat it whole.

I live in Ga and when I was in middle school I had a teacher that made some for us when we studied the Civil War...he used a freaking hammer to break it so we could all try a piece. Now back in middle school I was younger and thought I wouldn't have much trouble with them..I was very very wrong and nearly chipped a tooth trying to bite it..it went to the trash like just about everyone else did with their pieces. Now that I'm older and my teeth aren't as strong I'd shatter a few if I tried.

I once ripped open my finger trying to tear a day-old baguette in half after Dad bought one for us at Granville Island. The crust was so tough that it was enough to draw blood. I think I had better avoid the hardtack.

  • @ShinKyuubi

@@maryfreebed9886 Eh...if you break it up and soak it it's workable..in today's times I've figured I need to know how to work with things I got if I ever have to eat the stuff again or make it myself. Mind you my ENTIRE top row of teeth are permanent dental implants so if I tried munching on hardtack without softening it up somehow with liquid I'd be out a couple thousand bucks. There's a reason there's stories of Civil War soldiers breaking the stuff up and mixing it into soup or grinding it up into a powder to mix with water and make a batter for making something like pancakes.

I also tried a fresher one subjected to maggots!! for some months to varying degrees!! the hardtack part ok but questionable the maggots actually better than the actual hardtack with the maggots tasing nicely nutty!.

+Ashley Deaton Hi Ashley, There are several pieces of hardtack in the Minnesota Historical Society's Collection. All were donated well after the Civil War, but most came to the museum through the family of a soldier who served in the war and were found and donated with other wartime belongings, providing enough contextual evidence to date them to the Civil War. The hardtack featured in the video was the most recently donated piece in the Collection. It was donated anonymously in 1965, so the provenance is not as clear as the others pieces. Staff dated it to the Civil War based on research and comparison to accurately dated hardtack. It was accepted because its condition is superior to our other holdings. This piece was featured because it is the most complete piece in the collection. The others are cracked, broken or only partial pieces. See all hardtack in the MNHS Collection here: search.mnhs.org/index.php?q=%22Civil+War%22+AND+%22hardtack%22&brand=cms&displaymode=grid. Thanks for the question!

There are very few pieces of hardtack remaining, and by World War I true rations had already been created, which dates the piece appropriately to the Civil War era.
