The black flows of the True Power flowing into Ishy on the Seal are like the black umbilical cord at the end of TEOTW, only way more subtle - likely to pay homage and explain the end of TEOTW a bit more but also be a nod to book readers. I’m definitely in line with your Unraveling there. Another brilliant masterpiece!! And great marketing too! 😊

This is one of my favorite videos anyone has done on Season 1 of the show. I love so many of these foreshadowing moments you've highlighted including the clearing of the rubble and the foreshadowing of the fight at Shayol Ghul. I think there's no question that the writers have the entire series in mind in their writing and I really hope season 2 cements this show for Amazon Prime so they get a full 8 seasons.

I also thought it was interesting in the Manetheran scene that Rand’s hand - tapping to the song was out of sync with the actual beat of the song. I think that it was to show (A) that Rand was not, as the others were, of the Old Blood; and (B) that the Dragon is a being apart from everyone else.

re the rubble - thank you! Your comments re Rand (and others like Egwene) clearing the rubble of their past and working together to move forward is perfect . I hadn’t focused on that point before but it is definitely something RJ would have been trying to get through to us as readers. He already made it clear that people from all backgrounds, genders, abilities etc can choose Light or Dark for various reasons, overcome great obstacles and unite with many including those thought to be enemies to come out on top and conquer the Dark while showing that Balance is what is all important (& our environment - the Bowl of Winds arc and the need to sort that was an important point!).

Awesome video! I picked up some of these foreshadowing, but I didn't spot the Rand scene with the rubble, it's very subtle but totally fitting. I really loved Egwene looking at the Amyrlin seat, that was probably my favourite, but I also liked Tam's lantern speech. Also, I didn't pick it up myself but after Gus and Ali from the 'wheel takes' podcast pointed out how much foreshadowing there is for Dumai's Wells in Episode 4, that also became a favourite of mine.

I've recently been coming around, on my own, to the same conclusion you drew about Egwene undoing Nynaeve's burnout. Glad to see someone else finds that plausible, and I like your spin on it! And, like everything else you highlight, I agree that it really shows that the showrunners are finding their own way to be faithful to the spirit of the books, even if it felt wrong at first for book fans and maybe might be risking giving WoT noobs the wrong impression. I bet we might get some brief mention early in season two of how healing death and burnout is impossible, in a way that will make it clearer to non readers that Egwene did something other than healing, that even she doesn't fully understand yet.

Another great breakdown Lauren! There is definitely lots of foreshadowing and things being brought in from later story arcs earlier in season one to set things up. They still followed the main storyline of Eye of the World but they definitely needed to start touching on other elements like they did because if we're lucky and get 8 seasons that is barely enough to cover this massive epic. All those complaining about it not following word for word clearly do not understand how long it would take to film every piece of the story. We'd be waiting for 20+ years, the actors would all age out and there's no way you could keep the show going that long. I hope they can pick up the pace on production a bit because as it stands now they're still looking at more than 10 years to get to the Last Battle.

I agree. I am hoping that eventually they will produce 12 episode mini seasons, so 24 episodes/year(like the zombie show). THAT would be epic. So Im sure it wont happen. If we can get 2X8episodes each year, we could get all 14 books having their own season.

I was reading through the books again recently, and came across graendal's description of the True Power. "Nothing exists that cannot be unmade by the true power," or something close to that. I think the wires or black lines from 14:18 are an example of this, if not a callback to the description of the "black wires" rand was able to see in the end of book 1, and is what allowed the Heartstone seal to be broken.

Every time I see one of your videos its like sitting down to hear someone with a PHD in all things Wheel of Time and with an eye for often overlooked details and an ability to articulate in an easy to understand way talk about the series. I will admit that when I first watched the series it was not exactly what I was expecting but when I got over episodes not playing out exactly as I expected I quite enjoyed re watching the episodes. It could certainly have benefited from more episodes to get to know the characters and the whole 'who is the dragon reborn' required Rand to almost disappear into the background but I know that mystery really hooked a non book reader friend who watched the series and who is now reading through the books. To get renewed and tell the full story the show runner needs to attract a lot bigger an audience that hard core WOT book fans. I think the cast absolutely nail the characters they are playing. And for those who say that the showrunner doesn't care about RJ's story, as demonstrated in this video they sure seem to like putting in subtle details in various scenes that make a lot of sense if you have book reader insight. If that's not a love of the series I'm not sure what is. On the black threads emanating from or two "the man" in the episode 8 my two cents is that he was using what True Source to thread cracks into the hearthstone and then directs Rand's One Power blast into those threads or conduits to split apart the seal, a bit like water poured into cracks in a stone then quickly frozen. Its a stretch but could using one source of power to direct the flows of another source of power be a foreshadowing of what Rand did with Saidin & Saidar to cleanse the taint?

But yeah, the final battle is going to be soo cool. Also, as an aside, I have no reason why KZread suddenly decided today to show me Wheel of Time videos, but your stuff is fun.

Another Great Episode! Ive read these books only once all the way thrugh, because i couldnt get them all at once. Read 1-6, then 1-8, then 1-8(again!), then 1-10, and finally 1-14. Whew! So, the black trailings of The True Power under Ishmaels feet( I will NOT call him,"Ishy", lol) are his direct connection to the Dark Lord, so that Saidin/Saidar(even tainted) cannot break Cuendillar, but The True Power can. Its how he seals it in the end. He needs the Sha'itans Power to do those things The One Power cant. I hope i diddnt get The One /True Power mixed up. I cant seem to get them straight, ever. srry. Still wont call him Ishy. Where did THAT start?

Well done Lauren, another masterpiece. Your work is unparalleled in the fandom. Agree with your call outs here and as you say there are certainly more there. They've stacked it with foreshadowing like RJ did and to me that shows more than anything else that they 'get it'. I'd missed the rubble one before so thanks for highlighting it, very interesting. All well and good but I won't have hope until I see it for my own eyes. Season one was good but still a bit of a let down at the end. It remains to be seen of that was due solely to Barney leaving and the pandemic. I cross my fingers as I wait for season two.

Talk about going down the rabbit hole mate. Yes I agree there was a lot of foreshadowing in the show just like the books. The only trouble is for the non book readers or people that just started the books. We just have to hope the show keeps on going so we get the pay off.

Honestly, I think you are HEAVILY reaching on some of these actually being any intentional foreshadowing or symbolism of anything. You can do mental gymnastics and attribute meaning to almost anything. Similar happens all the time when discussing symbolism in literature classes.

  • @UnravelingthePattern

    @UnravelingthePattern

Yeah, that's fair. I know some of it is a stretch. But there is a lot more foreshadowing in the show, and I do believe many of these things were done intentionally. I think many of RJ's foreshadowing things seemed like nothing until hindsight. I'm hopeful that the show keeps all of these details in-mind throughout the run of the series.

The show definitely follows the books more closely than people seem to think. They confuse "accuracy from the books" with "accuracy to the books." The vast majority of things we've seen on the screen are straight from the books. But a ton of what's in the books didn't make the show. That doesn't make the show inaccurate. It makes it more streamlined. Also, I feel like you're stretching on a few of these things as foreshadowing. Rand clears the road because it gives him a reason to draw his bow quickly and skillfully and show his character as someone who doesn't just walk past a mess. Anything more is probably unlikely to be intentional. Same with the Nyneave stuff through Egwene. That would be confusing foreshadowing. Still, interesting points to consider.

Good analysis there is a lot of great things in the show. I really liked about 60% of the show, was meh on about 20% and really disliked 20%. My main gripe was the inconsistentcy, ie, shielding logain individually then at the end of episode they link🤷‍♂️. Nynaeve womansplaining tracking to Lan, the massive power creep with Rand's sa-angreal (which I thought was either going to Moraines angreal from book 1 or the Fatman angreal Rand finds in Tear), the 4 linked women killing ~5000 trollocs🤷‍♂️, and finally too many fake out deaths (loial, thom, inktar etc...) I'm fine with the change of direction Moraine being main character, the aging up the characters, the pace (which was too fast, 2hour episode 1 and 2 extra episodes could have fixed that). I have hopes they fix some things in season 2, but overall I am pleased with the show. I was expecting much worse due to the massive amount of material and honestly RJ lost direction big time around crown of swords, so hopefully they can make a great show that is built on the books framework.

The power creep isn't really an issue with the women killing the trollocs. Remember that Egwene and Nynaeve, two female channelers with some of the greatest raw strength in the One Power were part of the circle. That's a lot of saidar being channeled. The aes sedai are really dwindling in numbers in the books, so there aren't many of them who are trained AND come close to Egwene and Nynaeve's strength in the One Power. If you put enough of them in the circle, you'll be able to decimate an army of 5000 trollocs too.

Why everyone calls it the True Source. The True Power is the Dark One's power which only the Nebliss is gifted with it. Saidin and Saidar are the two parts of The One Power, which the show doesnt present. In fact, it is why the One Power splits in two is the reason why the world is in this mess, else there were no need for the Legends to try to Bore to the True Power ... Its just ... only the name of the Characters and the Series are the same. That is another story ... not Jorden's one/
