Even if I do these things, it is good to hear them and think about them as strategies, not just self-preservation. Got me at the end about why there are 15 tips :)

Wow, I love these videos!! I really want to take my cribbage to the next level. Couple questions: 1. Is it a general rule to never pair an opponents lead assuming board position isn't a factor? (especially if their lead is a four or less). Is it pretty safe to assume the initial lead is always a trap to get a triple? Is it generally a good idea to go ahead and risk pairing right after the initial lead. 2. I'd love to learn more about when and how much to sacrifice some points to improve the probability in your hand and crib. Should you always maximize your net points. (ie hand + crib) or when should you sacrifice points to turn a mediocre hand into what could be a killer hand/crib combo? (ignoring board position). I understand board position in the final lap but really good players take board position into account right from the very start. I really don't understand how they can do that.

Hi there! Glad to help! 1) This avoid the pair idea is a somewhat debated topic. The best player ever says the odds are safe to pair in the long run (as in, it'll work more times than not). But board position plays a key role. If you're ahead or starting dealer, you don't want to give up any points if possible, so avoiding it is a smart choice. 2) You can't ignore board position to answer this question IMHO. There is a "Big Hand Rule" put forth by another of the greats that helps with the sacrifice calculation for hands over 8 points. Check out Raz's cribbage videos for more on that. 3-ish) Board position is super tricky. I recommend getting Delynn Colvert's book. It'll help with that a lot. I'm no master yet, but I get the basics. I just haven't felt brave enough to make an in-depth video on it yet. It's called the 26-theory or Par Holes.

@@HuddleAroundGames Thanks for the reply and I look forward to more of your videos. (So much more effective than reading a book). I generally pair only after the initial lead but if I need to go into offense mode I'll take the chance. Cribbage is the ultimate 2 person game. (nice balance between luck and skill). As such, so many games come down to the wire such that every missed opportunity can cost you the game. And you're actually playing 3 games in one (the hand, the discard and the play, each with it's own strategies).

I don't play it enough at this time. Pegging is way different and a lot of the tactics seem less effective.

Discarding a combo that adds up to 5 is, on average, worth far more that just 2 points in a crib. A 5-x, 5-4, 5-6, A-4 and 2-3 are all worth 6.5-7 points. 7-8 is also in that range. 5-5 is worth 9, making it a very powerful option in your own crib.

Totally agreed. But the rule of two helps new players calculate better.

Maybe it’s because of the oversimplification that it seems bad (and I probably don’t explain it right if the 60 seconds I gave it 😂), but board positional play IS critical in winning more games!
