15 MOST Dangerous Rivers in the World

Ойын-сауық

A raging river with rushing water is obviously dangerous. But even calm, serene, slow-moving rivers can be dangerous. You can’t always judge a river by the surface of its water. Some of the most dangerous rivers in the world look relatively harmless on the surface. But aggressive reptiles, toxic waters, hidden tunnels, or violent undercurrents, the rivers in this video all have one thing in common - they’re deadly. So join us for today's video, as we take a look at the Top 15 Most Dangerous Rivers in the World.

a few years ago I was boating on the Mississippi River with my dad, I never realize how strong the current was until we were on the water, going against the current at full speed & still moving backwards in the boat. one of the scariest moments of my life. Luckily we made it back to our campsite dry & safe.

And depending on what country you're in, the Amazon can also be home to some less than savory anti-government types who aren't particularly fond of foreigners (especially Americans). You also have uncontacted indigenous tribes who rely on the river, though I'm more afraid for them than of them, since even the remotest contact with an outsider could infect them with illnesses to which they have no immunity.

I went to Thailand for a holiday a few years ago & i (being an Aussie) was absolutely shocked that the people that live literally in a shack on the river & used the river as the local garbo tip. They'd throw their garbage straight out the window into the water. Similarly the place we stayed absolutely reeked & there was rubbish all over the joint. Same deal, they'd throw their rubbish straight on to the street. A friend i went with tried to make the excuse it was so dirty coz they don't have garbo's to collect the rubbish like in any other normal country. Another of our mates said, i don't care if they have garbo's or not but just throwing garbage all over the joint is dirty as i said reeked, she said can't they actually throw their rubbish in a bin or plastic bag? No wonder they're very much a third world country.

The irony is, the ancient people used to dig holes behind their house and buried their trash in it or burnt the trash in that hole. The rivers were used as main transportation and water source for bathing and house hold used so it was generally clean. However as open burning is considered as a pollution in modern times, they've ditched that practice and simply throwing their trash in the river instead, since they didn't use the river like they did in the past. Sad eh. They should be allowed to burn their trash if their government cannot provide garbage collector for their villages. And they should be using incinerator like in Japan for their trash instead of using landfill.

There's a nice little rhyme about the Wharfe - and also about the nearby River Aire, which is fairly dangerous in its own right - "While the Aire is quick, and the Wharfe is lithe, where the Aire drowns one, the Wharfe drowns five." Interestingly, the worst bit of the Aire is quite far away from the worst stretch of the Wharfe, at the Castleford weirs.

The widest point of its navigable shipping channel is only TWO MILES, which is still impressive. But, don't be thinking of a strip of river that is 11 miles wide, that portion is actually a lake.

And the New Madrid Seismic Zone also lurks beneath parts of the Mississippi. If a major earthquake happens, the river would once again spiral out of control, as it did 200 years ago.

Statistically the Strid on the River Wharfe is the deadliest stretch of water in the world. Nobody who has fallen in it has ever survived. It’s been measured via sonar at about 50m deep, and nobody really knows the full extent or profile below the surface. Because it’s so deep, the water is aerated, so there is no buoyancy and you can’t even stay on the surface if you tried. If you think about it, the whole river is turned on it’s side as it passes through it, and the turns back horizontal once it’s through. When you stand by it, it looks so benign, and it’s only about 6 feet wide at it’s narrowest point. A lot of people think they can jump it, but it’s really slippery and the rocks are at funny angles, which leads to people’s downfall. It’s an utterly beautiful spot though. I’ve been there many times.

Actually, this may or may not be true, but apparently a husband pushed his wife into the Strid for whatever reason. Then he goes to the police to report 'an accident' where his wife slipped and fell in and is gone. Sadly for him she somehow survived and WAS AT the police station telling them how her husband pushed her in. lol That's the story I saw on another channel, so take that with a grain of salt as it might be a falsehood.

Then when it get high, it literally be right at the tip top..one strong wind gust would push some over the levee

I find this list very Americo-centric. How is the Congo AFTER the Red River & a river in California? It should be after the Amazon, based on the depth & dangerous fish. It also passes through the second largest jungle on earth. Historically, it was the region of King Leopold ‘s atrocities in the 19th centuries & contributed to the centuries-long slave trade. Secondly, the Zambezi is pronounced the “Zam-bee-zee”. Interesting video though. Thanks for posting!
