Palmyra Atoll has the quirky distinction of being the last Incorporated territory of the US. All other US territories are unincorporated. Incorporated territories are considered integral parts of the US and the constitution would fully apply to the residents (if there were any). 31 states were formerly part of incorporated territories and Palmyra Atoll is the last remnant of these.

Goats were popular because of their ability to survive; seems they'd be hard to catch though. Pigs are too, they're wicked smart & fight like lions. When my dad was young, there was an old joke, when somebody asked where someone else was: "They went out back and the hogs et 'em". Because this was actually known to have happened occasionally. When I raised hogs in the 1990s, I had to teach my small kids not to climb on the "pig panel" fence, or stick their limbs through it. There was a real danger that a hog would grab hold of them & jerk an arm off, or whatever else they could get a hold of. Pigs can be very mean, even if well fed.
The venom of the Golden Lancet viper would be classed as a necrotoxic is it does the damage as described in this video. Haemotoxic venom disrupts the clotting process of blood.

17:30 The lighthouse was converted to fully automatic for pretty much the same reasons as the vast majority of stations were being converted at that time across the world; better automation = less need for a human supervisor and COST CUTTING that has, arguably, caused unnecessary loss of life in a large number of the areas concerned. There is also the very serious problem enabled by these stations being set to unmanned auto that I have personally observed. Even here in NZ, I have seen the evidence of the dregs finding their way out to these essential safety stations and not just defacing them but actively attempting to disable them.

There used to be a "Weather Ship " anchored about 100 miles off the northern tip of Vancouver Island . It gave accurate predictions because it actually SAW the weather as it came thru towards the Island . In 1979 it was replaced with an automated station ( a Weather Buoy ) A year later , the buoy predicted a storm w/ 50 MPH winds coming in 12 hrs It turned out to be 100 MPH in 6 hrs 4 of my friends were caught in it and died .Saving money and losing lives !!!

The pigs on that island are not Ferrel pigs. You can tell by the body shape and the color of their hides. It only takes 4-6 generations of hogs inbreeding without human intervention to develop longer snouts, hairier bodies, more slender bodies and distinctly brownish coats. Especially the pig with the black/grey spot on its butt - that is a cross bred pig between one of the white breeds Yorkshire/Landrace/Chest White and a Hampshire. There may have been pigs left behind by sailors in the past, but someone is planting new, commercial hogs on the island to feed the interest of the tourists.

You could have just googled "feral" instead of writing a whole paragraph. If those pigs on the island aren't being tended to by a farmer then they are simply "feral" by definition even the very day they are dropped off there.
@cdjhyoung
Жыл бұрын
@@Nygaard2 They may be 'feral' by the dictionary, but these animals are getting taken care of by some human other than the tourist. I've raised a lot of pigs, and helped a number of farmers. Pigs don't look like this unless they are being fed a balanced diet. Pigs living on foraged food have an entirely different look. That all said, it is a nice treat for the tourist and the truth would do them no good. That the pigs aren't truly wild makes it much safer for the inexperienced to be near them.

I think those pigs are being well fed somewhere out of sight of the tourists. They all show markings of being current, commercial breeds of animals. They also don't have the thin sides of pigs that need to forage for their own food. Pigs are like Beagles, if you offer them food, they eat it like they haven't eaten for a week. Pigs are also like dogs in that they like humans and interact with them in a non aggressive way IF they don't perceive a risk to themselves (the pigs, that is).
