15 mins? I can't stop replaying the first 2 minutes! Judy's performance of The Sweetest Sounds gives me chills and makes me feel and believe every word she sings. I feel incredibly lucky to still get to experience Judy's magic whenever I want.

Watched this again a year later! The GREAT GARLAND with the GREAT COUNT BASIE one can't top it! Judy is in great voice here and you can see Basie is pleased. No one can touch Judy when she was on: NOT THEN AND NOT NOW!

The staging, the lighting, the arrangements, the composers, the instrumentalists, Immortal Count Basie, and Immortal Judy . . . These 15 minutes chronicle what is now the lost art of music, but which we gratefully revisit and cherish here.

The best 15 minutes of superb music. One can always COUNT on JUDY. This is as good as it gets.

Judy's voice was like silk in this episode. There wasn't a crack or rough spot anywhere. This is Judy Garland at her very best.

The chord progressions in "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm" would knock out of commission today's singers - only Judy: an extraordinary master vocalist. Incomparable.

Watching her is such joy. She's brilliant, a total gem.

The greatest of all time!

Not only a fabulous voice, but an expressive and good story teller through her singing. You felt what she was going through.

No trickery, just talent! Something is missing these days …

I love to read so many comments that show me that a Judy Revolution still goes on today, and among the younger generation. I think she knows it. Just to hear “the greatest talent that ever lived,” makes my heart sore because Judy surely was the greatest star this world has ever known. I have made it an endeavor to make sure my children and grandchildren have learned about her, an effort to know her, to appreciate her and to know her music and style. They love her as much as I do and appreciate this adorable creature. LOOK AT HER, SHE IS ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE ❣️❣️

Judy Garland makes the astonishing seem absolutely effortless!

The electricity that She sends out is unmatched!

Apart from Garland's brilliance what many don't notice is the sheer beauty of the camera work, direction and staging of her TV specials like this. The runway lights, the footlights and the black backdrops are jaw droppingly beautiful as a way to frame Judy's persona. These days there is so much distraction in tv performances. That's because the less the talent the more tricks required. These presentations were so beautifully crafted.

I can´t see much beauty in the camera work here. Not in the beginning, at least. But I agree that TV productions was much better in the 60s than today, with all ticks and effects. In those days they concentrated on the artists and had simple, but stylish backdrops. Less is more!

As always, Judy declaims every lyric as though it was occurring to her, right on the spot... ...and in the presence of the Basie Band, she makes it SWING. (Mel Torme is pretty good, too.)

This voice that I have loved for years!!! Bravo , for this glance!! Her voice was never better. She is the very best of allll time

Garland in sublime form in this amazing performance, clearly Count Basie is in heaven working with Judy and they should have done an album, like this performance would have been a lasting classic...

Surely the most stylish and elegant opening ever seen on TV. This is not just a variety show, this is ART!!

Irene Clarke I think if this show continued and was a success she would never have passed away in 1969. She took the cancellation of her show personally and spiraled downward afterwards . 😪

Such a powerful voice coming from such a petite gal. I still like her style of singing when she was a teenager rather than the modern jazz.

There is no comparison period, by anyone period. I haven't seen the movie JUDY, but if they didn't use Judys voice, and she sang in the movie, shame on them, the movie isn't factual.

The movie JUDY did not use Judy’s voice. I didn’t care for the movie even if Judy’s voice was used. I think Renee has a decent voice and love her other films but I would not waste my time with this one. It was a stinker, not accurate in so many ways, and down right annoying. I don’t know who that woman was in the movie, but she was NOT MY JUDY!!!!!!

Judy is in wonderful voice. The Count seems to help bring out her very best magic. Thank you for this.

JUST LOVE this clip!!! Judy is the best especially when she starts to finish the song with the lyrics "there is work to be done....." Her voice just soars and the vibrato is chilling!!!

Boy, do I miss Judy. Those WERE simpler, happy yester years.

Absolutely mesmerizing! I can listen and watch this great lady sing forever! ❤️

There is so much talent on the stage. I think my favorite part is watching Basie’s face as Torme and Garland sing April in Paris.

Backtothefuture, In 1959, Judy almost died, and Doctor who took care of her, and saved her life was amazed that she survived. She had the worst case of Hepatitis that anyone ever lived through at that time, according to her Doctor. Her liver, I believe was 5 times it's normal size, and she was blotted beyond belief. Judy as Sid had an argument at their home in Los Angeles because Judy wouldn't go to a Doctor, and Sid tricked her by having a Doctor play an old WWII Air Force buddy that he invited to their dinner party at their house. When the doctor was introduced to Judy and she touched him, the Doctor took Sid aside, and told him to get Judy to the hospital STAT, he said to Sid that Judy was retaining LIQUIDS, SHE WAS BLOATED, NOT FAT. When Sid explained what was going on, Judy popped a cork. She grabbed her car keys and left. She didn't return home. Sid called everybody he could think of including Roger Edens. As I remember the story Roger started looking for Judy with no success, after several hours Sid received a phone call from a Doctor in New York. Judy was brought in to their Emergency Room. She collapsed on 5th ave. Sid was told that Judy was in serious condition and probably won't make through the night.To be continued. Where I don't know.

Backtothefurture, when Judy died she was.all skin and bones. She looked like a 70 year old women. Her husband at that time wasn't taking very good care of her.

You can tell how much she dug singing in front of and with Basie and the band. And Basie on organ!

Judy and the Brilliant Count Basie & His Orchestra! Just golden. Nearly 60 years later and It is still perfection, even if most people don't know who they are they left an indelible mark on music.

She was not only a phenomenal singer but a consummate actress as well. On Cottage for Sale, which a lesser singer might've made a dirge from the intro, she maintains the happiness of the memories throughout most of it, for even as she sings about the hay where the roses once grew, she's still seeing the roses--she maintains what once WAS, even though she's singing about what now IS, hoping perhaps that it's not over, and it is only until the very last line, "a cottage for sale" hits her as a reality do we see the devastation felt from the loss of the relationship. This is how to walk around in a song and mine every bit out of what's there. Brava, Diva!

“Judy Garland was a fellow spirit of unshareable grief to some people.” Stephan Colbert I love this because it explains my relationship with her. A relationship I couldn’t explain. She was such an amazing artist and I especially love this segment of her show.

In awe every time I listen! A one-two punch. Starting with Count Basie's swing, and ending with the haunting A Cottage For Sale- the most melancholy of songs...

WOULD HAVE LOVED TO HAD HEAR HER DO AN ALBUM, BASIE'S BANDS JUST SOUNDED SO GREAT WITH SINGERS, AND DAM COULD THEY SWING

Thanks for posting; can only wonder what she was thinking with "Cottage For Sale"... It's now 50 years since her passing. RIP

Absolutely stunning

Bill Basie had the best big band in the world at that time, and I will go so far as to argue that the best swing band, ever. Working here with Judy was amazing and the duet with Mel Torme on "April in Paris" was over the top. Thanks for sharing.

the count played in back of sinatra and garland with the same effect. magnificent !! he put together the best musicians and then added the cream. then you have the delivery of a pro like judy. she had the music in her and he in his. they are qual at a time of no equality. this is the best of the profession. i have been listening to both these past 73 years and it has made me the person i have become. it makes me want to wake up tomorrow and every day.

Brilliance at work.

Although I was born in November of '57, my intro to Judy Garland were the records my parents played. The one that struck me the most was her Carnegie Hall concert. I wanted to grow up and be Judy Garland! Somewhere in there, I saw The Wizard of Oz, but for me it was this wonderful, magical story that "Judy did when she was young". Her style of singing, the way her mouth moved, her eyes, she was so unique! I was just looking at the clips of her funeral; gone young yet certain celebrities were there and not to make the paper. James Mason spoke and it was played outside of the funeral home for those in a crowd that literally packed the NYC streets

Wow is all I can say and if this isn't a legendary moment there isn't one.

Judy and the Count and, oh yes, Mel Torment...LOL!!!! All great musicians and such a treat seeing them all together!!

@@lawrencemoore Yes!! Judy's nickname for Mel. Apparently they didn't get along all that well together. And after Judy died, he wrote a very unflattering book on Judy and his work with her on the television show.

Judy Garland, Count Basie and Mel Torme... irreplaceable talents dying in 1969, 1984 and 1999. An amazing show from the Golden Age of television. (No, that is not today, folks.)

I'll never forget Mel Torme performing backstage Disney for Christmas parade performer attendees from high schools. We gave him three standing ovations for The Christmas Song. And, same day Michael Jackson was there being seen by parents and still have the beginning of M before his security grabbed from him and he gave disappointed look to my Mom. I say that because when backstage they evidently took Michael by and a lot of kids ran from seats. I never saw him but heard he pinched classmates rear and said something like oh baby. I loved seeing Torme so much better because knew at time a lot of talent my parents grew up to weren't going to be around for years more perhaps.

Mel is a back stabbing, two faced jerk. Mel went to see Judy about a regular job on her show, and she did him a favor and hired him, according to the article I read. When Judy died Mel released a book that he wrote about what supposedly went on back stage. He was not kind about what he said about Judy. Which most people said wasn't true. He back stabbed Judy who hired him because, he needed the job. Mel I hope your roasting down below.

I've wondered about that often. I grew up in the 1940s and 50s. Back in those days there was a great deal of "romance." You can see it in the lyrics of all the great songs of the 1940s. That generation had romance because most of them didn't have sex before marriage. They had months and years sometimes to fantasize and write songs about their sweetheart before reality set in after the marriage. That time of fantasy was inspiring. Now most people have sex on the first or second date. My theory is that when the "sexual revolution" started, that was the end of romance, the kind that inspired those great love songs of the 1940s.

+David -- I would add that we have a glut of cynics who look at any hint of sentiment or show biz as annoying. Kids on TV sit-com programs, from as far back as the 1970s, looked at their parents as impossible squares who lacked any hipness. The inside joke among teenagers (especially) is that the "old stuff" is too corny and sweet. Instead they fawn over and idolize sh_t-kickers like rap artists and scantily clad bimbos.

I don't Know! I have just purchased a load of oldies 1950 to 1969, from Judy to Jimi Hendrix, and all on vinyl. I'm gonna get more. Its no problem for me to switch up from Woodstock to Judy at Carnegie Hall, its all good music.

Because the industry needs novelty, plus because of people's limited attention real state. So, they invest in things that seem modern and flashy… so other waves come strong and take over everybody's attention, like pop music, rock, hip hop and so on: Beatles, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Queen, Whitney Houston, Britney Spears, Tupac Shakur, Beyonce… they come with loads of marketing, then people get hyped over it because it's portrayed as the hot cool thing of the moment, usually it's the next generation, so they weren't even introduced to what was before. So it gets forgotten. And it seems more distant since technology looks older (black and white, etc.).. so young people just reckons it's old and irrelevant. A small percentage, like 1% or 2% actually gets interested in the past and to some extent preserve the legacy of artists.

Because everything has been dumbed down, and people have no real appreciation for proper music and lyrics and the composition of a song. It all started to go bad in the late 50s when the 'kids' started taking over. Don't even start me on Rap crap!

I am amazed that so few people have seen this compilation. Makes most of the stuff we see these days pale in comparison.

Re A cottage for sale. No one can combine that intimate acting with the musicality, and phrasing she brings to a song like this. I can't even come up with a credible 'second place' or honorable mention that isn't a lap behind. Its ephemeral quality is sublime, almost mystic.
