1400 ct Opal BRICK

In this video, I take 1400 carats of fine Coober Pedy opal with distinct black opal and white opal layers and make some amazing cabochons with it. The material is very unusual, in that the black opal very much resembles that seen from Lightning Ridge. Opal is a gemstone made of silica whose molecues are arranged in small groups with a round shape. The alignment of the silica "balls" is what determines if the opal wil have color (gem opal - gemstone) or have no color (common opal or "potch").

to me, personally, the offcuts are the best pieces. I'm much more interested in how the stone grew, and what its different layers are than to just have one flawless opal face. I like it when there's inclusions and sand and potch around, so seeing you took good care of the offcuts warmed my heart a little. They might not look the prettiest, but they are definitely the most interesting pieces in my opinion.

I worked on the sheep and fruit farms in east Australia in the early 90s, doing everything from shearer's cook, and picking oranges in blistering heat, to pulling dags off shorn fleece. Before returning to Scotland I used my earnings to buy 3 beautiful opals. They weren't perfect but they made every moment of every sh*tty job I did worthwhile. One opal I had set in a silver ring, the other set in a bead worn in the dreadlocks of my son's late father. All 3 are now gone. Stolen, in some form or another, along the way. Tbh, I don't blame the folk who took them as I think that's the magic and allure of the opal. I reckon people are willing to do anything to own them. I know I was.

Don't wait! I've cut many gorgeous Opals using sandpaper [wet-dry type, black grit] and 'Pop-sicle' sticks for dops! From two small parcels ($500 and $800; "53 Frogs" are the best!) I managed 9 gems and three 'specimens', averaging about 1.2 carats each. Most were white to clear crystal, two blacks (green + blue pinfire and blue-green floral) and a script/dendrite specimen! The process: 120 grit to rough in the shape, 200 or so to smooth refine the shape down. 400, 600, 1000 grit papers in turns to get ready for polishing, refine the surface. 1500, 2000, 3000 papers for final polish...work clean! You don't want 400 grit 'sand' showing up in your final polishing cloth! Yes, it is mind-numbingly slow using little bits of sandpaper, but it's also very hard to mess up when cutting is this slow! Always, always, always cut/polish wet! I used Super-glue as dop-stick adhesive...bad choice as it 'cratered' the the back of the Opal on removal! Old-school red 'sealing wax' if you can't find the proper green 'dop wax'...hot-glue works, but is not very water resistant. Waiting for the 'right tools' is all good, but try one small 'fun parcel' with sandpaper...who knows what you'll discover?

@@sarahfisher6801 No worries! Find some glass marbles with 'cats eyes' and a hammer. Break a marble, and cut a perfect high-dome oval or cushion-cut from the biggest shard! Glue them onto pop-sicle sticks, get yer Papers of Sanding and teach your self how to cut Opals! Soda glass (most common mass produced) is a bit harder than Opal, but it cuts and polishes pretty much the same. If the marble shard has an internal pattern, 'expose' it in the high dome. This will give you a feel for 'facing' a stone so the cut reveals the best aspects of the pattern. Once you can cut 'perfect domes' of your choosing, Oregon or Mexican Opal (less expensive than Australian, cuts nicely) would be a natural progression. It is a serious investment, getting the Opal roughs. But that don't mean you have to wait to learn the skills!

I’m glad I found your channel! My wife’s favorite stone is an opal. I hope to begin to dabble in stone cutting myself soon! Thanks for the great videos!! Amazing opals!

I personally like the pieces with the opal and stone mixed together. They contrast so nicely.

I love seeing all the unique pieces come out of the stones you start with. And the odd pieces are so nice as well. Glad you give them away.
