#14 Van Life: I don't want this to end. Nomad life with minor disabilities. 3 life saving van tips.

I needed one more big adventure. So I sold my Florida home in December 2021 and have been traveling full time in my no build minivan with my 2 little dogs since then.

Beautiful scenery. Loved seeing it. I’m a 67 year old senior woman who travels solo. I don’t have vertigo or disabilities yet. However, I have stopped taking chances. When I’m traveling my hikes/walks are limited to a mile or less and I look for good terrain. My biggest fear is falling and breaking a bone so I am extremely careful. My current road trip has taken me from Tennessee to Alaska. I’m loving it and also don’t want it to end!

I’ve been (quietly) watching you for awhile now and just want to tell you how much I enjoy your videos. Since a kid I have camped & backpacked. In 2004 I lost my leg in an auto accident…I was 37. I use crutches & a wheelchair and I camp (often solo) out of a Class B conversion van. I’m now 55. Maybe because I was “younger” when my mobility changed I just decided: I might be slower and look ridiculous doing things (often like a beached walrus 🤣) but ya know what?! I get it done. I don’t want to tell you how to feel, but…woman! You should be proud!! Look at all you do! Look how you’ve found YOUR way to see the world and connect with nature! 🪶💪 ⚡️ Love your videos…safe & happy travels to you!

So glad you got out of the shower! I'm sorry about your vertigo. From a viewer's point of view, I like how you don't do 'walk and talk' videos or do the panoramic background sweeps as I get seasick when others do that! I love the way you show us your travels and how you are feeling along the way. Your videos are always interesting and inspiring. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us all in such a thoughtful way.

Thank you Jan for all you're doing . Such talent in producing the videos , the music , all the beautiful scenery . I greatly admire your courage . You inspire me to believe that I can do this on a smaller scale even at 82 years old in my mini van . But, really I prefer a full size van that I can stand up in . Using what I have and taking small steps seems the best plan .

Jan, have been enjoying all of your Vlogs and tips. My tip is to get an Apple Watch. It saved my life. I live alone, and when I bent forward to pick up something I had dropped, I got dizzy and fell forward and hit my head. My watch detected the fall and sounded an alarm and that noise kept me awake. I called for help using the watch! If I had not responded to the watch, Apple would have contacted 911 and also called my son that I had listed as a contact. I went to trauma center by ambulance and found out I had a bilateral fracture of my C2 bone in my neck. I had to wear a hard neck brace for 3 months. I later found out my falling and dizzy spells were from low potassium. That happened one year ago. I’m doing fine now and I always wear my Apple Watch! I’m 78 years young! I tell everyone about my experience and hope they consider getting a watch. Hope and pray you keep on enjoying your journey and stay safe, Ann.

Thanks so much for this tip. I'll look into buying a watch like that & learning how to use it ,if all in my budget. Having had recent knee injuries & issues ,plus both rotator cuffs ( shoulders ) repaired ; I must BE MORE cautious now . Still desire to get back to Rocky Mountains & hike some easy trails ! In my 79th year here on 🌎 ,so a bit slower now.

I love my Apple Watch! It is such a safeguard when I am by myself at home or out and about. I love the safety features. I fell and like you said it starting tapping my wrist to wake me up and get my attention with the haptic feature and asked me if I needed EMS or my family. I found out I had 2 heart conditions and Sleep Apnea by wearing my Apple Watch. Also my watch alerted me to my low oxygen intake at night. Three hours every night my oxygen level was only 77-80%SpO2. I now use a BiPAP machine every night. The Hospital Overnight Sleep Clinic Test only confirmed what my Apple Watch had already told me. I had to have a Cather Heart Ablation for AFib and SVT, take heart rate medication and blood thinner daily. I had been telling my doctor I was having heart trouble for 3 years. They never caught it with their test. Apple picked up my AFIB in 48 hours. I sent my doctor a screenshot of Apples results and THEN SHE LISTENED TO ME, scheduled a Holter 48 hour monitor for me to wear, put me on a blood thinner, and sent me to a cardiologist. All from the results of my Apple Watch. (Needless to say, I then changed doctors).

Excellent advice! Folks might check with their cell phone providers for deals on devices & plans. I just got my mom a smartwatch & line thru T-Mobile for under $20/month, which is less costly than the Lifeline device that will only work at home, near the base unit. She's 88 & just started having some mobility issues, so any little thing that can help her feel independent AND safe is worth doing. Jan (& all you adventurous ladies) are an inspiration! Be well 💜

You do such an incredible job, Jan- your videos are fabulous! I use an Apple watch, and for $10/month it's on my cell phone plan. I tripped and fell in the driveway last year, and it immediately detected the fall. Siri right away asked if I needed her to call 911. Fortunately, I was fine... but, I feel so secure when wearing it now. It's waterproof as well!

Great tips Jan! It won’t be the end of your journey! Look how far you’ve come! You’re doing everything right by taking precautions, being careful. What fluky thing to have happen being stuck in the shower stall thing. Thank goodness you got out! And there are worse ways to get your lesson for not forgetting your phone. I’m glad you did call and make them aware that they should definitely change their policies! Was Susie with you? She would’ve helped make the ruckus as well. You had some beautiful scenery today with music to go with. It was majestic. I didn’t think that I would like the desert, but actually I found it quite gorgeous. My parents were both snowbirds. Every year they would go from California to Arizona for the winter and they always said they just love the desert. I could never figure out what they saw in it. Thank you for showing me. Keep your chin up. And keep doing your thing. Take your walking sticks with you and your phone especially when you hike. When and if you make it to Northern California, let me know. You have a place to stay.

Another safety tip...get a loud whistle and wear it on a lanyard around your neck when walking/hiking. Should anything happen, it will attract attention to your location with less breath than a shout. It will also scare off many species of animals.

Beautiful and informative content as always, Jan. Thank you. An observation on vertigo: About 30 years ago (yikes!) I headed out to work one morning and was stricken with such a consuming attack of vertigo I couldn't make it to the train. I went home, swearing I'd never stay out late with friends on a weekend again. Fortunately it was a holiday weekend so I had a few days to recover... which didn't happen. I couldn't walk without hanging on to something. I couldn't turn my head or shift my gaze with my eyes open. It was horrifying. At work, I was 'the dizzy blonde.' Fast forward: I had a CAT scan and was tested for allergies, hearing loss. a virus and a dozen other things. I was working in Philadelphia at the time and couldn't jaywalk (i think there are still dessicated carcasses of pedestrians from out of town waiting for the WALK sign at the corners to change) for NINE MONTHS. The doctor called it vestibular neuronitis and said it would go away. He prescribed valium. Then I got contact lenses. I'd gotten new glasses the previous summer - bifocals with progressive lenses. My eyes/brain tolerated the change for about 2 months, but then rebelled and refused to accommodate it any longer. As soon as I got the contact lenses - for purely cosmetic reasons - the vertigo stopped. The very next day. Less than a year later, my boss had a nearly identical experience, but his lens Rx was much older than mine. So I've been wearing contact lenses with bifocal specs with the little D-shaped correction for close work as backup. I'm not suggesting you change anything, but if you get curious in the future, keep it in mind. Again, thanks for your splendid content. Anyway, If you can pinpoint an event that likely caused your condition, that's good news and

I can relate to so much of your story! I’m 67 and have a couple of minor disabilities. I broke my ankle quite badly in 1989 and have a limp and significant arthritis now. I was in a head on collision in 1999, with only a cervical spine injury. I was able to put off surgery for ten years, but caring for my parents took a toll and it ended up having a three level fusion in 2009. Thank goodness for backup cameras! Balance is a concern, as is the flexibility in my ankle to be able to recover from the slightest stumble or uneven surface. I have to be careful, too. That said, I hope to travel in my minivan about half time someday! You inspire me!

I am stunned that you were describing me with the dizziness, when I'm standing. Not the normal dizziness, but I usually walk with a cane when I'm out shopping or in a big area because that is when it gets worse. I had cataracts removed and the doctors said my dizziness was due to my brain seeing differently or separately out of each eye. I decided not to pursue any more opinions on it. But I see that you experience something similar. I know just how frustrating it is. I also have serious neck injuries. Falling would not be good. Thanks for sharing!

This was a very nice video. I watched it to the very end last night. I woke up this morning remembering what you said about not being sure how to pronounce the word Coyotes because you don’t have them in Florida. Then I thought since you are not very familiar with Coyotes that I should tell you so you are aware that they often pray on small dogs. On the West coast we have a lot of them, they come in the residential areas, they pray on outdoor cats and small dogs. Their main diet is rabbits but at some point the rabbit population dwindle down and they start looking for other food source. You are lucky that the noise made them go away because around here there is not much that even make them flinch. It is not rare at all to read about people walking there small dog on a leash and a Coyote grab the dog, many accounts of them easily going over 6 foot fence in backyard, even higher, to grab a small dog in their mouth and climb back the fence/wall with it. Also, accounts of Coyote going in a house that has the patio door open to grab a small dog laying down in the living room. It happens very fast. Sorry, this is not to scare you but since you are not familiar with them and you do have small dogs, I thought to let you know. Walking stick did not help at all a senior lady that was trying to hold on to her dog on a leash that was already in a Coyote’s mouth. Personally, I bought bear spray although this can cause serious discomfort to yourself and your dog if used against the wind. Just be aware that they can be very bold.

Thank you, Sylvie. I had read in reviews of the casino that they hung out in the parking lot where I would be taking the dogs out. I felt like had to do something. I didn't see them again, but that doesn't mean much since they are sneaky. Suzi must look delicious because big dogs have gone after her before. Thankfully she's never been injured but I always have something with me when I walk them. I have carried a powerful, loud stun gun that scares them away with the noise and could be used as a weapon. Thanks for the info. I will be careful. In Florida it's alligators that like dogs.

Very much enjoying your videos and especially your honesty. As a perfectionist, I can take the joy out of my endeavors and accomplishments. I had always wanted to be in IT but hadn't finished my degree and would end up working on the business side with the technical expertise that I had gained from what I did learn in college as well as on the job experience. My last 10 years I had gotten to work in IT but not at the level of expertise I had hoped for in my life. I then saw the movie about Florence Foster Jenkins who had always wanted to be the best soprano and as a teen was able to sing however at a young age her singing was ruined by untreated syphilis she contracted from her husband on their wedding night. She sang anyway even though she was awful. The quote "some may say I can't sing, but they can't say I didn't sing" hit me. I left the movie in tears. Some may say I can't IT, but they can't say I didn't IT! So I stopped demeaning myself as to how my career turned out. And when I retired from the IT department, so many people made it clear to me that I would be missed because I contributed a lot in those 10 years. :)

Yeah Moth balls are kind of a scary item as they have cyanide in them. One thing I highly recommend is to get a little bottle of Walmart cheapest brand or even the dollar store cayenne pepper. You can take that if it has a sprinkle top and sprinkle it around in your engine compartment and on top of your tires at night when you've parked and mice absolutely hate it. Also if you have your food in a specific compartment you can sprinkle cayenne pepper down in the bottom of that and then take and smear some around the top of that container, it will do the job and it will not endanger yours or your dog's health.

Great shots, I know what you mean with vertigo. There's a medical condition where we all have tiny Crystal's that forn in the inner ear when there come loose it cases vertigo. I had it and a simple manipulation by Dr cured it in minutes. Unfortunately it happens mainly to women in late 50's. Had it again other day. I stagger holding on to my bedroom doorway and walk to the kitchen holding on to the refrigerator just to get a coffee. The bathroom experience was really horrible, good idea keep phone close and we'll charge it while you drive. Will look for that pet spray here looks like handy size for you pocket. It is horrible as an adult to fall. In the past 3 years I have fallen each year. Hi Anita! 👋 I took Interstate 10 west to avoid snow and cold. I left Florida early in the morning and pushed all the way through to Texas the first day to avoid a storm with high winds. I barely remember the states I passed through that day.
