14 ways you could be hurting your cat without realizing:
#14. Neglecting the litter box:
Cats are very clean creatures. Neglecting to clean the litter box can be harmful to your cat's health, as well as your own. Your cat may even refuse to use the litter box altogether if it is very dirty. The litter box should be cleaned at least once a day if you have one cat, and more frequently if you have multiple cats.
#13. Not cleaning their food and water dishes:
You must clean and wash your cat's food and water dishes daily. Leaving food or water unchanged for more than one day gives the bacteria a chance to grow, especially if you're using wet food. This can directly harm your cat's health. Your cats dishes should be taken care of the same way we take care of our dishes.
#12. Not using the right dishes:
It is best to choose dishes made of stainless steel and avoid other materials such as plastic and ceramic. This is because these materials get scratched over time and bacteria accumulate inside these scratches, making them difficult to clean. Stainless steel on the other hand does not develop such scratches and is easier to clean.
Do not choose deep dishes. When the dish is deep, your cat's whiskers touch the sides of the dish. Since cat whiskers are highly sensitive, this can cause discomfort and stress to the cat. Some cats even take their food out of the dish to avoid having their whiskers touch the sides. Therefore, you should only choose wide, shallow dishes.
#11. Punishing your cat:
If your cat does something you don't like, never think of punishing or shouting at them. Simply because they will see that you are trying to hurt them, and that will break the bond of trust between you, try searching online for specific reasons why your cat might be acting in this way, and how to address it properly. You will find many tips that can help you change the bad behavior.
#10. Surprising them:
You may have seen videos of people putting a cucumber near their cats. This action usually scares cats. In fact, cats are not afraid of the cucumber itself. Rather, they are afraid of the sudden appearance of this thing near them out of no where. This is a natural reflex for cats, as they think it might be a snake or some other animal that wants to hurt them. If you want to play with your cat, look for the right ways to do it and never do such actions with these lovely creatures.
#9. Waking them up:
Cats sleep between twelve and eighteen hours every day. They love sleeping a lot and will never be happy if they are disturbed during their sleep in any way. Do not make any loud noises while your cat is sleeping and definitely don't wake them up.
#8. Ignoring them when they ask for attention:
Despite cats spending a lot of time alone, they sometimes need to spend time with you to get the affection and feeling of security that you provide. So, you may find your cat trying to get your attention sometimes, either by rubbing against you, sitting next to you, or getting near your hand. When your cat asks for your attention, never ignore them. Doing so will make them feel sad, lonely, and possibly even depressed if you keep ignoring them.
#7. Loud noises:
Cats are afraid of loud and unexpected noises such as the sound of vacuum cleaners, a hair dryer, loud TV or loud music, loud human voices, thunder, slamming doors, and many others. Therefore, try your best not to expose your cat to these noises, and definitely never shout at them.
#6. Strong smells:
Cats have a sense of smell that is fourteen times stronger than humans. Therefore, cats are usually annoyed by the smells we use around the house, such as cleaners or air fresheners. also products such as perfume, creams, or shampoos bother them. Do not hug your cat immediately after using these products, this could make them associate you with these undesirable smells.
#5. Grabbing their tail or rubbing their tummy:
Most cats don't like having their bellies touched. This is because the belly area is one of the weakest areas of a cat's body. In some cases, if you have owned the cat since it was a kitten, or have handled it with great care and made it feel very safe with you, it may allow you to touch its belly. But generally, it is best to avoid doing this if your cat shows signs of discomfort:
Gripping the tail is also not welcomed. The cat may react with an unexpected reaction if you try to grip its tail. Especially if you pull on it. Avoid any actions that make your cat uncomfortable, so you can be their source of safety and comfort.
#4. Aggressive Petting:
When playing with your cat, don't pet it forcefully or quickly. This will scare the cat and make it try to escape. Also, don't hug your cat too tightly. This will make it feel trapped and unable to escape. You should always be gentle when petting or playing with your cat.

I cant believe we have to remind people of these! I say if you cannot comply, then dont own a cat! I JUST ADOPTED MY KITTY TWO DAYS AGO....... IVE NEVER BEEN SO HAPPY! I LOVE HIM SOOOOOOO MUCH❤ I HAVE RE NAMED HIM OMAR! OMAR IS THE KINDEST, MOST HANDSOME, HAPPIEST CAT I HAVE EVER KNOWN! There have been some awful situations in my life recently that have been making me incredibly depressed! This was a huge decision for me. I have never owned a pet while living on my own. I have always traveled, was always affraid i wouldnt be able to financially keep up with any pet. But now, in my mid 50's, i have saved tooth and nail for this little guy! I have a seperate account that is just for him! Vet visits, if anything ever happened, i know that i am completely covered! It was hard work to save like this, but i have to say...... HE WAS SO WORTH PUTTING EVERY PENNY AWAY! Thanks for reading❤ i have to tell the world of my new BFF❤ BEST DECISION I HAVE EVER MADE MY ENTIRE LIFE❤ I AM SO HAPPY❤

Been thru that. It's horrible. Have inside cats and separate yard cats. A 4 month old kitten vanished 10 days ago. She wouldn't leave as her mom and dad and me raised her with her brother. At 4 months momma cat still loving and washing her and running to see she's not doing unsafe things. Known cats all my life but never have seen a strong family bond like this. Either preditors or accident got her or kids took her. She's only outside cat but I dewormed and treated ears etc. She was my buddy and hurts not knowing what happened loss of cats can hurt more than loss of relatives as they are in our life completely and the loss is a big hole.

I understand the loss. I pray she returns to you. Talk to her each day. Shake Treat jars like Friskies. My Sylvie (TNRs) i had 6. She was 3 yrs old. Someone stole her. We live on a cul de sac, walkers always looking toward our home. They heard me loving her and she was hanging on me and rubbing her face on me. Sylvie was super affectionate b/c she was receptive to my others ages 5-12 yrs old. I aches for her. When a pet has crossed over to rainbow bridge they will come to you in a dream. She hasn’t. At one time we had 13 TNRs and 6 indoor domestic pets. All of the TNRs became affectionate & unafraid. I’ve lost 3 sibling felines in 18 months. Heartbroken 💔. The TNRs are down to 5 in front and 1 in backyard. Our dog is 15, we’ve had her 12 yrs. She recovered from being abused; no more trauma shunning. I would like to make 3 additional suggestions: 1. Many cats do not like being left alone if you are gone a lot [working, traveling, etc]. You might consider getting a second cat. 2. Indoor cats need to have ways for them to connect with nature [such as having a screened porch or letting them outside in back yard occasionally] 3. Declawing cats can be very traumatic, esp for feral cats.

@@isobelmiddleton6353 cutting off a cats toes to declaw them is unfortunately legal and how they declaw. They actually have KZread videos showing the declaw surgery, it’s hard to watch them cut a cats toes off though.
I had always wanted a cat who was okay with their belly being rubbed, so I raised a cat from a kitten and rubbed his belly All The Time. Now he loves it 😄❤

My girlfriend had an orphaned cat who just loved all rubbs including belly rubbs,she loved them so much. I had a male cat and he also loved belley rubbs so there are plenty of cats who loves them.

Awww thats so cute. A street cat is comming to our house. He has no owner. We feed him and now he is very friendly with us. I try to rub his belly and neck but he doesn't like it.😢 I think its bcz he grows alone. When I become elder i will raise a cute cat and rub his everwhere❤❤❤❤

@@angelicaescobar1544 I would insist she put that cell phone DOWN or away when she visits you. If she refuses to do that, I would not let her come in until she puts it away. Teach her there are consequences to her staring at her phone constantly right in front of you.

Biblically, Paul writes of God's creatures..all belong to him and as such we should respect them and treat them well, help with them as needed, etc...you may laugh at this but when it is nice...all ten want out and that adds two more from the bunkhouse and 5 wild kitties...every night I ask the LOrd to take care of "our" fur babies for they belong to him first and gifts to me.
I love my four cats and have had them all my life. I've had purebreds and several "alley cats". I learnt to feed them, their ways of communicating with me and training them yo the litter box. They are a joy

I have 10..most of them are feral; however, they are all sweet and perfect in my eyes! The come when called and when I go looking for a missing one...some of them accompany me on my walk...tail up, ears up and little feet pitty pattering just as fast as they can...I have tuxedos, long haired multi colored beauties, etc..the black ones are far more affectionate...

Most of mine are ferals, drop offs and usually abused; with that said, each and every one of them comes to their names when called; however, we have one named Indie for Independence...she gives us a run for our money and her food...everyone of them have a different personality, a different need for love, food ...it is a riot around here some feedings...11 in the house, 2 in the bunkhouse and 5 wild cats we are trying to tame to fix and find homes for...seems each one wants a different menu at a different time ...wouldn't change it for the world....ho hum...kitty, mom is tired..mew, mew..so what...I still need some attention.
Moral of the story: You live in their house So be Greatful and Respect their Privacy

These are good tips, and remember NEVER de-claw a cat or keep them in a small room with no windows. Pets are part of the family.

Yes, absolutely. Heard about this when I was trying to get cats nails trimmed. Someone I knew did this to their cat. I really felt for it. If it jumped on me when I went over to visit, I made sure to give this beautiful Orange Tabby a lot of love knowing what my friend did to its claws.

@@buddylove346 I came to the conclusion that he did it because he was not very smart about cat care. I think he only had it because his grand-daughter like the kitty. I have little respect for people who do not do their research on how to properly care for a defense-less animal. That's just where I stand on that topic.

The reason why I use a file instead of clippers is cus it can be nerve wrecking for most pets esp my cat and dog so I make it a bit more comfortable by using a file instead
My cat loved his belly rubbed. He knew the word BRUSH when i wanted to brush his coat. I could touch him everywhere. I adopted him from an animal shelter when he was 2 yrs old and had him for 8 yrs. He just turned 10 yrs old and had to put him down to health complications. Pets are better than some human beings. They accept who you are as a person. My cat would always wake me up at 800 am and when it cane to 10 pm he would remind me it is beddy byes. I miss him dearly. April 27, 2023 he left this earth so things are quite fresh. Memories were all beautiful.😢😢

When my cat died at 20, he did it so peacefully, all within a few minutes. He'd had his long good life even though he started as a feral cat. He slept under my chin.

Cats, whether indoor cats or outdoor cats, are highly sensitive and vulnerable to stresses, which do affect their well-being and physiological functions, especially their liver and kidneys. Too many cats develop organ decline due to disease that may have been avoided; however, just nurturing rescued cats is the kindest and most selfless of actions, a cat parent companion may do. Know that routine blood tests with vet exams help identify ailments early... so the cats have a better chance to fully recover. Cats living indoors will live healthier lives longer than outdoor counterparts. Cats know to show affection with appreciation and gratitude in their unique ways. Cats are unique, misunderstood, yet everyone may learn more to treat cats effectively, more selflessly, and afterwards experience mutual understanding appreciation.

She will go to the Rainbow bridge which is like heaven and they'll wait for us. Just had to put down our 18 yr old red tabby with a freaked nose. Miss her so. Heart wrenching 💔 I feel your pain. Sorry 😢

A man was walking with his dog. He saw a beautiful gold gate and a sign saying Heaven. He told the gatekeeper that he and his dog were thirsty. He answered you can come in, but your dog can't come in. He decided if my dog isn't welcome I'll keep walking. Do dogs have whiskers? I'm not a dog person and I find myself genuinely wondering right now... Gun to my head, I say.. yes? I feed my cats canned food on styrofoam plates. Easiest clean up ever. Not because I throw away the plates, but because once any leftover food dries out, it just flakes right off the plate. Now someone please tell me about CFCs & all of the other chemicals found in styrofoam that are detrimental to both the planet and my cat. I promise, I will totally pretend to care.

Yup! I hate seeing videos where people deliberately scare their cats, or do the stupid seran wrap thing with their dogs and cats thinking it funny or the stupid challenge making them go through an obstacle course. I report it. What’s worse is that people think those things are funny and owners who get a kick out of scaring their cat, or teasing them only to be drama queens when the cat lashes out.
Do not use chemicals to clean your cats bowls. They have sensitive noses and they won't like it. Warm water is just fine and I heard this from Jackson Galaxy who is a cat expert.

Warm water alone is not enough to clean your cat’s bowls. It won’t remove all traces of food and bacteria from the bowls, and it won’t disinfect them. You can use dish soap to clean your cat’s bowls, but you need to rinse them thoroughly and dry them with a clean towel. You certainly need to avoid leaving any residue on the bowls. You should also use a separate sponge for your cat’s bowls.

OMG!! I thought it was another dumb video but you actually know your topic! Thank you so much for the info on the cat dishes/whiskers. Didn't know that. I instinctively knew a lot of the others points, and thank you for informing people about noise, smells etc. A HUGE pet peeve of mine is seeing ppl grab cats by the scruff of the neck. UGH! It HURTS them! NEVER do that. The mother puts the entire neck inside her mouth! Besides, you are NOT a gentle cat mom. I miss my feral cats so much. After saving their lives during lockdown, when no one went to feed them, I used my $ to buy them food and couldn't pay rent. I got evicted. Am homeless now.
Also in case anyone has a cat and does not know this-please do not get lillies in your house. these flowers are extremely toxic for cats and has killed many cats so please be safe

There are 300 plants an more that cats are allergic to but they like cat nip in moderation an grass when their tummy is upset being up fur balls an so on
I agree there dishes should be cleaned& fresh 💧 water daily. I would never hurt a resue cat! Or any animal!❤❤ I never wake up my furbabies! I put the phone away , when my Kiiten wants attention. Never use defushers with cat alone. 🐈 I always pet Leapoard with gentle love. She likes to be in warm window. I never put clothes on my furbabies! Be kind to pets , u will have them around for a long time!❤❤❤

I'm going to show this to my son. He's too aggressive when trying to pet our cats and they're frightened of him.
I spray my cat with a spray bottle when he scratches furniture or gets in the counter. He still loves me!
When my cat breaks something I just sarcastically smile at him

I had a cat that was so affectionate. He just loved being with people. He would put his arms around my neck and look at me. Eye contact. All our neighbours thought he was an amazing cat they loved him as well. Except for one sick individual who poisoned him. A trusting cat that died .i dont know why. I always remember him as a cat dog as i like both animals he was our families perfect pet.

This breaks my heart. A nasty person poisoned my cat as well. What hurts the most is that as long as I was home he would stay with me in my room and sometimes sleep all day. Soon as I went back out to work he went outside roaming and was poisoned. I cried for days and still cry and miss him so much. Now my other 2 cats are strictly in the house I never let them out alone and keep my eye on them all the time when I do.
Thank you for spreading the word like this! Think how many cats will be spared pain & anxiety if more people LEARN about them before they try to "care" for one. Yes!...also, those plug-in room deodorisers & hot oil burners & the like, are very toxic to cats!! Now as soon as we get the world to stop letting cats roam free outdoors, the cat world will be in heaven. Next, do a list for all the myriad reasons you should have an INDOOR-ONLY cat!!! Yay!!!!

I have a list on paper I had gotten from a vet years ago that I copy and give out to people. It's a little long with all the reasons why cats should not be outdoors. I wish there was a way I can cut and paste it on here. I can't type them all because I have a bad hand. I'll see if maybe I can put a few up here when a little later.

I have one, but I never wrote it down, and I don't know if I can recall all...because there are many! And most people have no idea and let their cats run wild. It's strange, as I have a stray teenage black male that's been abandoned here, at my acreage. It's a long dead end dirt road and a good place to get rid of unwanted animals. But, it would be grand if you could post your list here....maybe someone could type it for you. We could compare notes. Perhaps I'll get a reply from you sometime!? Bye!

Our cat's morning routine includes 1) eating, 2) getting brushed, and if she requests it, getting a belly rub. She likes it and will let you know when she's done!
My orange Tom cat likes to have his belly rubbed. But he trusts me. I talk to him in a low pitched voice, low volume. He finds that somehow soothing; like we're "the same." That, in fact is why he was given to me - he just naturally gravitated toward me so my friend gave him to me. It was either my scent or my voice. He follows me everywhere. We both like to look out the window at the birds. He (like me) loves birdies. I'm thinking of getting him an Audubon Society membership.
My cat LOVES the smell of shampoo / creams and soap. He isnt a very "friendly" cat he doesnt sit on my knee or like being stroked much (he was an abused adult rescue) but when Ive washed my hands or had a bath he is there rubbing against me / my hands / hair - it makes him go all purry and soft

My cats litter trays r cleaned everytime used, same with plates.
My boy still goes where he’s not supposed to. Yes I do two things. Either yell at my boy to get down or point to the floor and he gets down or I’ll push him off. He still does it, he’s still loving. That’s the only time I’ve done it. My boy knows I’ll never hurt him. He doesn’t do it often. He likes to test me. We’re still close.

My cats have the TV room, dining room and kitchen and upstairs. They both mostly stay near me. And when it comes to TV just got a new used one. Wide screen TV. My boy will sit in front of it and watch. He never cared about the smaller one. His sister will do the same. I put the TV on a little loud as I’m hearing impaired. It’s not blasting so loud that you can hear it down the block.
Both of my cats absolutely love me petting their bellies. And I remember how my old cat Lisa hated her sweater. One day she took it off and hid it from us under the bath tub. We found it in months and it was hard to get it out. Never ever since we put it on our girl.

I will not do this either. Although it doesn't do great harm, it still breaks trust. The only bad behavior our cat has had is scratching furniture. We put scratching pads or posts in front of and now just near furniture. At first we had to divert her attention from the furniture to the pads or posts. Now she just goes to the pads or posts.

The dishes part. I have a plastic connected water and food dish I’ve been using through three previous cats and my boy uses it. I clean it every day. Hasn’t bothered him one bit! My girl uses the plastic food and water dish that my late Chihuahua used. I clean those every day. My have no preference between the their dishes. They alternate. Hasn’t bothered anyone especially the brown attached one whose seen Moon, Taco, Manny and now alternating between Manny2 and his sister Money. No problem with deepens, no interference with whiskers. Have had cats since 1980. I know what I’m doing and don’t need anyone telling me what dishes to use. I’ve used my late dog’s food bowls also with no problem as my two like to alternate. They don’t care what bowls I use. They’ve not gotten sick because I wash them out good every day. Plastic is NOT difficult to clean if you do it every day. I take good care of my bowls so there are no scratches and my cats previous and current have never gotten sick with bowls used down the line. Use what works for you with bowls.
Never wake the cat. Well, somebody needs to tell my cat to not wake me up either. 🤣😂

My cats are awesome because they chill when I am playing loud music and are completely unphased by the vacuum. 😂 I even leave the doors open so they can "escape". They seem to want to watch me toil 🤣🤣🤣

Slamming them on the floor/throwing them hurts them too, you can cause fractures and bruising, even internal bleeding. Don't get mad at your cat and use physical punishment. There are better ways to correct your fluffy babies.
